A Murder at the End of the World (2023) S1 E7

Andy should at least be charged with involuntary manslaughter, because he created Ray. It’s like if a self-driving Tesla ran over and killed someone, Musk would be responsible because the buck stops with him. Of course, the child would not be culpable, as he did not know what he was doing. You can’t escape responsibility by saying “I didn’t know that would happen if I did such and such.” Our laws must be updated to deal with these possibilities in the future.

Maybe not another season, but at least a movie to wrap it all up. I just don’t like endings where you have to imagine what you would like to happen.

Just on the self-driving cars here’s the law nerd answer…Musk/Tesla hasn’t been legally liable for these accidents because even with a car in complete ‘self-driving mode’ a Tesla rider is still considered a driver “operating the vehicle” because they have control and the ability to make safety choices. The law holds that if you’re operating a machine you have a responsibility to make choices that will operate it safely. Congress should pass a law immediately holding Tesla and the other companies liable for accidents that happen while a car is even in supervised self-driving mode. The state of the law right now is that as long as self-driving is an optional choice they will always be able to blame the operator. That means manufacturers have no incentive other than market share to improve these systems. I don’t think congress will be passing new liability laws for anything any time soon.
