I haven’t read any of the AF books but figure i’d be disappointed in this movie if i had. It’s hard to say exactly why it doesn’t work.. In a world where fairies are a hi-tech paramilitary force the CGI is impressive and there are some good action sequences but the story is lacking as is the acting. Artemis the actor is unconvincing, his acting consists of one ‘serious’ expression.. The fairy Holly Short, played by Lara McDonnell, is the best actor on show, while the bargain-basement Hagrid-lookalike dwarf played by Josh Gad is sadly no Robbie Coltrane. Even the presence of Judi Dench can’t lift the enterprise though i fancy she enjoyed playing in pointy ears!. Ken Brannagh’s direction is sound enough, the film looks great but would’ve been a lot better had they spent less on CGi and more on plot development and acting.. and Jeez why do action flicks need so much insistent, weepy music throughout every piece of dialogue. It would’ve been much better to make a series of this story as originally intended with less expensive tech wizardry and better writing. Generally altogether unsatisfactory and they left a BiG open-end for further instalments, which if they’re made really will need be a lot better after the poor reception of this mish-mash.. i wonder if Disney will want to risk the cash after being forced by CV to release this direct to streaming? They spent $125 million on this movie for an 88 minute entertainment, extremely poor value when you do the math. Best line, “This world needs more fairies like you.” How true :((
