The relationship between Maya and her mother is incredibly well written and well played. Best character interaction of the show. So much of this show is about how people get broken and ill and what they need when they begin to heal, and how those efforts get cut short by other characters’ agendas. You know the boyfriend is going to be some kind of villain, this reveals him as just as much of an uncaring manipulator as everyone else, and that’s bleak.
