Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Just so good. Definitely a slow burn but the payoff is worth it. This was my 2nd time watching this & I enjoyed it even more this watch. It will keep you guessing. Some very twisted scenarios & violence/torture which might put off some people.

Oldboy (2003)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago*.

Twisted, twisted, twisted but oh so excellent & a classic of Korean cinema. This is the original version that is superior to Spike Lee’s remake (which is still good). If you watch both watch this one first.

This is the 2nd in a trilogy of vengeance films by the same director, Mr. Vengeance & Lady Vengeance being the 2 others. The only thread through all three is they are vengeance based. Worth your time if you don’t mind extreme violence.

Bad Trip (2021)
augusts1 0 points 2 years ago.

Love Eric Andre & Tiffany Haddish. Just a funny movie w/some crazy pranks & nothing too deep for a good forget everything watch. I was surprised they actually have a plot to it lol. If you’re into Andre’s absurdist comedy give it a try.

Sushi Police (2016)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Love the style of animation in the first episode. Definitely a unique tongue in cheek approach to humor too as the Sushi Police fight inauthentic sushi around the world! Need subtitles though.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2022)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago*.

Really excellent adaptation of the Shakespeare play & well worth your time even if you think The Bard is not for you. An incredible cast starring incredible performances by Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand & many others. The production design is gorgeous too. Joel Coen of Coen Brothers fame (Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou, etc) breaks out on his own to direct this w/resounding success. I believe Oscar will be visiting this movie many times in the months ahead.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago*.

Classic trippy movie loosely based on the’70s glam rock era rock stars Bowie & Iggy. Amazing movie & the ST is excellent too.

Do not watch this knowing nothing about Macbeth. hell dont even watch it at all if youre obsessed with superhero shit. This is the perfect adaption of Macbeth. have a good day

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Yes because people shouldn’t stretch their boundaries & try understanding a classic, goddess forbid!🤦‍♂️

Dark City (1998)

Now you need to watch (The city of lost children.)

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

I love that movie! It’s so dark (literally & figuratively),strange & fascinating. Jeunet is a brilliant filmmaker, creating amazing worlds in his movies. No one knows that film & everyone fawns over Amelie which is great too but TCOLC is great in its own right.

alicefell 1 points 2 years ago.

August - Thank you for the tip! I would have never known. Methinks there is more preciousness coming my way!

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Great, glad you’re interested in it. I love all Jeunet’s movies since they are quirky & interesting visually.

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Directed by ‘Amelie’ director Jeunet, this is a very sweet travelogue & ode to science done in his unique style yet toned down from the frenetic pace of Amelie. Great cast w/Kyle Catlett as the genius kid & Helena Bonham Carter as the mom. Definitely worth a watch.

S4 is starting off killer. Great epi.

greyfur 1 points 2 years ago.

You guys are killing me, you talking about the dance sequence? Was myself thinking that that should never have been done (would insert a facepalm here if I knew how) but I guess to each his own.

Saw that the first episode and couldn’t believe they did that. Thought that it took something away from the whole thing. But that’s me I guess.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Agreed @greyfur. It doesn’t really fit imo & it’s very stilted. It doesn’t look like they are enjoying themselves either. It was funny the 1st time but I’m over it now.

Just watched the debut epi & not surprised at how great it is so far since horror director James Wan exec. produced it. He has made some great films, like The Conjuring & Insidious & Saw. If you don’t know him look him up.

Loved the gradual buildup through the epi & the character development is great from the two leads & the writers. I’ve seen before Athie in The Get Down series but not Dina in anything. They did a great job w/the production design too.

Yep Judy Davis is AMAZING ! Good movie but not as good as “We need to talk about Kevin” !

WNTTA Kevin is stellar. Tilda Swinton’s performance was amazing.

The Truman Show (1998)
jew_squirrel 7 points 3 years ago*.

A fascinating and mind-bending classic!! Jim Carrey is incredible!! So is the hot babe he chases after!! I sometimes wonder if I’m a secret A-list star of a tv show because I’m obviously such an interesting and cool person and some really strange things have happened to me over the course of my glorious, sex-soaked life!! Like the other day I had a squirrel “walk” up to me and start to glitch out, and I coulda sworn it spoke to me!! Summing up: Great movie!! Recommeded for people who like to wonder and think about the meaning of it all!!

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Nightmare Alley (2021)
SheWatches 5 points 2 years ago.

What I liked about the movie is the classic feel to it. Its a chronological type movie and period piece. Reminiscent of the 1950s black and white movies. I enjoyed watching it and will probably watch it again later.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Well it is a remake of the ‘47 movie so you’re correct in your reminiscence.

one hit wonder? what about Hell Raiser, Teenage Rampage, Turn It Down, Fox on the Run

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Forgot about Fox on the Run which was big but where I grew up those other 3 didn’t get radio play. Then again I grew up in bumf**k Egypt aka a suburb south of Portland,OR lol.

t-rex, slade, the sweet, some say early ziggy stardust era bowie all glam rock origionators.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Wow, you know of The Sweet? Loved them back in the day but few remember them in the glam rock scene since they were a one hit wonder. ‘Ballroom Blitz’ was my jam!

Peacemaker (2022)
augusts1 6 points 2 years ago.

Great pilot. I’m not a big superhero fan but I do like Cena & he does a great job in this. Entire cast is great too. Writing is top notch & there’s a lot of humor throughout. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Alex vs America (2022)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

It’s fascinating to watch the chefs having to cook in a certain time w/some oddball ingredients. Pretty amazing what they come up with.

I didn’t know anything about Alex but watched it since it popped up in the new shows section. Haven’t watched any cooking competition shows either so this is fun to watch, although rather nerve wracking.

I agree. It is pure fun. And you get an insight into these stars’ personalities.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Thank you. I think people are rating it w/o watching it imo. I know some people can’t stand Fallon but I love him. He’s just full of joy & you can tell he’s having a great time.

That's My Jam (2021)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

I don’t know why the score for this show is a 1 on this site? It’s 7.0 on IMDB & it’s a fun game show. I really enjoyed it & the various games they play are creative. It’s just a great show to forget your troubles for awhile.

My guess…bullet proof vest, another dead cop….escape??

augusts1 0 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

You obviously didn’t pay attention. There was an obvious bullet hole w/blood, but it was flowing on the inside of his sweater onto the ground. There’s no way he could recover from that since he wasn’t receiving any type of care to prevent a bleed out.

Wow, wasn’t expecting that ending at all. Dexter should be immortal, not human lol. Sad the series is over.

Finding Magic Mike (2021)

Surprised how much heart this show has. The guys competing form a strong bond w/one another & open up, sharing a lot about what they are going through during the challenges each week.

Promising Young Woman (2020)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Excellent & very dark film. Carey Mulligan is fantastic as a troubled woman who is plagued by her past & seeks revenge. Bo Burnham is great as her suitor. Actually the whole cast is amazing. It’s a very intense movie w/an intense subject matter so it could be triggering to some.

Dexter: New Blood (2021) S1 E9
greyfur 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I’m pausing at the 30 minute mark just to stop and say this, then going back in, but really needs saying, wish to God they would have left Debbie the heck out of this, she has been nothing but an annoyance the whole darn time. Sooo freaking sick of hearing her voice quite frankly…

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

I love her & love that they included her in the new series. She really adds a lot imo.

In the Earth (2021)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This is what happens when science goes w/o checks & balances. Scientists can lose sight of their original goal & go off the deep end. It reminds me of Frankenstein somewhat, when a scientist is left to their own devices. I think also you can takeaway your own meaning from it too. It’s that sort of movie.

Well done movie, w/convincing performances by the cast. I was mesmerized by them & the woods that was a character itself. The atmosphere created was formidable & foreboding. Wheatley took his time building the tension slowly. I’ll be thinking about this for a few days.

Firebite (2021)

First epi was quite good. Created some good intrigue & the 2 main characters are interesting & layered. Nice start, I hope they can build on the momentum in this pilot.

Exists (2014)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Entertaining but not w/o it’s flaws. If you liked The Blair Witch Project this is a partly found footage film by one of the co-directors Eduardo Sanchez & co-written by him & the other director Jamie Nash of TBWP. It certainly kept my attention & was tense until the 45 min mark & then I was wondering how much longer it would last. Fortunately the movie gets more intense for the last 20 minutes & doesn’t let up. Worth a one time watch.

The Pantry Ghost Documentary (2013)

Fascinating doc. Curious how it ends so abruptly though. I have so many questions, like did the ghost stop haunting them after they left the house since it had such a strong connection w/the little girl? The footage is pretty compelling, especially after the video/editing specialist looked at it & verified it was not edited. Paranormal stuff is so interesting.

Dance of the 41 (2021)
augusts1 0 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Really excellent true period piece about a Mexican upper class couple & their struggles to become viable in their society. Acting, costumes & sets were all stellar. This movie gave a glimpse into how Mexican society dealt w/alternative lifestyles back in the late 19th century. Not a film for everyone but I’d recommend it if you are open minded. Then again it could help you understand different lifestyles if you’re not open minded.
