Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021)
Tilos 5 points 2 years ago.

Incredible musical archives. Incredible also that this event was wiped off collective memory. Collective history.

Not quite 5 stars for me though, despite world-class music segments and crazy historical value. Because the document cannot seem to chose between being a pure film concert and a documentary.

For each major star’s music segment, we cut to either an interview of the same stars today or archives of the civil rights fights at the time. It’s great as a (very much needed) reminder. But as a storytelling device it is disjointed and repetitive. Also, gimme more of those music archives please.

I felt I never knew enough about the event itself. Over how many days did it take place? How many artists? How the heck did they manage that crazy budget? Why was there no second edition?

And pertaining to the film: where were the archives? How were they never shown? How did they end up surfacing? What did it take to make this film happen? This is all part of the remembrance process. Of the wiping-off process, too. I missed that very much.

Anyway. If you just came for the music archives, buckle up. Cos here lies some of the best soul music you’ll ever hear.

This is destined to be every annual high school musical everywhere forever from here on out. I see what you did there.

Seriously this is top-notch. The book is fantastic, the cast is fantastic, the production values are all-out. Makes me want to leave work early today and do a 48-hour Lerner and Loewe bingefest.

I am usually not the person to make the following comment, I think I have only said this about a crime show two or three times in the last five years: this show was boring and frustrating to me. The crime itself is fascinating and intriguing and sad. These are among the best actors (Søren Malling, Pilou Asbæk, Rolf Lassgård) and production values are excellent, I love moody contemplative Nordic crime TV and I watch everything that comes out in this genre. I appreciate that this was based on a true story and maybe the minimalist portrayal is a deliberate stylistic choice. Because it is a “true crime” story the point of the show is that real police work is dull and methodical but you stick with it even though nothing happens in real police work 90% of the time and then justice will be done. If that is the approach to me it would have been better as a documentary on a crime. I thought it would be a crime drama, there’s only about 90 minutes of dramatic material here. I stayed with it out hoping it would pick up pace (I couldn’t believe that something with such high production values and actors and such a fascinating crime would continue to be so slow and muted). From the comments on here I see that I’m in the minority, the people who already knew about this as a historical event, enjoyed it very much. 3/5

I likes me a good mizzenmast in midsummer…it’s pirate time. It’s hard to take well-known historical characters and material and make it fresh and alive - they made a wise choice creating stories that run parallel to pirate canon and historical events, and that lets them deeply develop the characters. Many of the cast were little-known standout actors who made their bones on this show and Toby Stephens is the ex boyfriend who comes slinking around every summer that I can’t quit, dammit. Best high seas battles on TV, beautifully shot, Bear Grylls score, prestige television that doesn’t act like it and that’s refreshing. First couple of eps are slow, stick with it. It just keeps getting better from there. In my top ten series of all time.

This is about perfect - so much great stuff to chew on. The characters are fascinating to begin with and you learn so much more about them as they react to the strangeness of what’s going on. Have to watch it over again to make sure I got everything. Looks like there might be a Season 2.

Lupin (2021)
expresso 4 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This is the comic book version of Lupin and I am there for it. Omar Sy has jeu d’esprit coming out of his pores. You either like Omar Sy or you don’t but he’s the kind of actor you want if you’re making a comic book Lupin. The Lupin fanbase are just as obsessed about canon and continuity as every MCU comic-head. A lot of them are not thrilled that this was updated from 19th century Paris society to modern day Paris and that Lupin was reimagined as a black character. 19th century Lupin spends years mastering disguise and deception to avoid being recognized while he’s pranking his society peers and settling scores through elaborate schemes. Comic book Lupin has tech and attitude, the mastery not so much. To me, he’s a classic flawed superhero. He’s sloppy and foolish and sentimental and he ghosts on the people who care about him. He escapes all consequences because the writers give him improbable lucky breaks he shouldn’t get, to save his butt for the next issue. Nobody in the Paris of this Lupin looks closely at a black man and he plays that to advantage. He’s right in front of the people constantly searching for him in broad daylight. His disguises aren’t really all that good. He’s just not a suspect because his superpower is his skin. You can be offended by the heavy-handed attempt to make you feel bad about racism, but he has a lot of fun with it and that’s pretty hilarious. If you were looking for classic Arsene Lupin or hoping for a sophisticated ‘Thomas Crowne Affair’ type heist-and-caper story, this show is going to disappoint you.

Outlier (2020)

There is some excellent writing and acting in here. It’s uneven - many things I liked a lot, and many things I didn’t. Overall, I think it’s a great watch and I’m happy to believe that we will be getting better and better stuff from HBO Nordic from here on out.

Pros: Some nice twists: I’ve seen a lot of procedurals and while some of it was completely predictable, in several places it caught me off guard. Maya’s character: at first she’s practically a cartoon, arrogant and unlikeable, hostile, suspicious of all men - by the time you get through a couple more episodes it swings into focus and it’s all very clear where it comes from. You assume she’s flawed due to temperament and attitudes, you find out she’s flawed due to damage that’s been done to her by her family and community. Maya’s mother: five stars - this actress performs the most realistic portrayal I’ve seen of a manipulative, self-medicated elderly dementia patient. Her character does an artful dance between the self-aware sudden flashes of anger alternating with indifference provoked by her daughter, and the feigned helplessness which keeps her drug habit going. Elle, who opens the series and becomes the second story line running through the plot, is full of the optimism and self-confidence that makes small-town characters believe they are wise to the world and then recoil from the cynicism she’s forced to face. She’s the perfect balance against Maya.

Cons: The criminal with the cleft palate. A disability stigma that goes all the way back to the dark ages, runs through all of Shakespeare, up through the Victorian era, and is still alive and well today. The demonization of people with disabilities is utterly deplorable. He pissed me off every time I saw him and it distracted me from the plot. I kept thinking, why did this actor accept this role? The police chief: I kept waiting for him to develop in some way that would pull him into the plot, for the narrative to give him something that explained why he’s an obstacle and why I should care. It didn’t and I didn’t.

Outlier (2020) S1 E7
expresso 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The relationship between Maya and her mother is incredibly well written and well played. Best character interaction of the show. So much of this show is about how people get broken and ill and what they need when they begin to heal, and how those efforts get cut short by other characters’ agendas. You know the boyfriend is going to be some kind of villain, this reveals him as just as much of an uncaring manipulator as everyone else, and that’s bleak.

Legendary (2020)
expresso 2 points 2 years ago*.

This show is so solid now, it has come a long way since last year. Last year they had live audiences which I knew would go away due to the pandemic. The opening episode was difficult to sit through, no DJ and no crowd, minimal lighting and tech, costumes and music and performance were disjointed. They have always had trouble placing cameras to capture the whole performance experience. The last few have been amazingly better, both in terms of performances and the way the show happens around them. Each week they are amping the theatricality and props and the elaborate spoken word stories. All of that is fun but IMO not why I am there watching ballroom. It’s supposed to be about the people and what they are selling themselves and selling as a family. I assume that this probably reflects the current state of high end ballroom today and it’s become a really different thing. I have been watching this show in connection with Pose and that has been really wonderful, I love watching those old way ballroom vogue battles. Dashaun and the judges are really starting to let their hair down and interact and use language the way we all know that they do. They made all the right moves with this show and now it is just as good as Drag Race. Keep it up b*ches!! This is my guilty pleasure, break down and cave in, eat a full bag of potato chips at one sitting show. You have to balance out David Attenborough.

Usually when he plays patient and low key, it’s shady. He’s sending himself up and making fun of his own character and it comes across as fourth wall, actor-egotistical, and smarmy. Look at me. Here he convinces me that he actually cares as the character and about the character. He does a great patient dad stereotype. I loved him with the medieval kid.

Loki (2021)

My #2: I was BLOWN AWAY by the mid-century period way this was done. Just as good as Legion in that regard - we got the 50’s cartoons, the 60’s Jetsons vibe, the swingin 70’s with the colored appliances, some of the tech was what I can only call midcentury retro futuro-steampunk. I’m a little bit bored with using the timeline, it’s almost become a crutch in a lot of series, but here I love it. Loki is the OG chaotic character. Of course he can subvert all those protective layers. Takes him 15 minutes to figure out the vulnerabilities in the tech and the people and exploit them. I love everything about this :)

I enjoyed the show and love the character and actor, really liked to see Owen Wilson. That said hasn’t the future cop past self hunting future self trope been done to death already? When they said the person on the floor died from stab wounds I was really hoping the person that they where looking for would turn out to be Deadpool. Actually, many butterflies prefer rotten fruit, carrion and dung to flower nectar. Sorry, I know you can’t unsee that now, but you asked. Ironically, those were the familiar Monarch butterflies famously known for wintering in Mexico in the thousands, and they are one of the few butterflies that do not eat those things.
