Nuclear Hurricane (2007)
YgraineDance 2 points 3 years ago.

People in dire, terrifying situations do not crack wise. Such fake reactions to peril. That was my real complaint with things going on here. Also, I was very turned off by the leading male protagonist’s sexist, resentful mewling throughout. That kind of shyte dates a film horribly. :-/

The Vault (2017)
YgraineDance 1 points 3 years ago.

Jump scares and a nonsensical, convoluted story. It didn’t do much for me, but some may like it.

Sometimes They Come Back... for More (1998)
YgraineDance 1 points 3 years ago.

This offering seems to have almost nothing to do with the other two movies in the series. There sure could have been a lot more backstory given—-and it would have made things a lot more interesting IMO. A very slight, passing mention of a couple of earlier characters is about the only thing that connects these films. Think of “Jaws 3” and its place (or lack thereof) in the series, and you’ll know what I mean about franchise continuity.

Sometimes They Come Back... Again (1996)

Alexis Arquette does a lot of really fun, over-the-top scenery chewing in this one. May she R.I.P.

Quest for Fire (1981)

Ron Perlman did not require makeup for this role :) And the languages are all made up .. you dont need to know what anyone is saying, its obvious. I dont believe for a second mesolithic man in europe was this unsophisticated, but .. its a lotta fun and a great adventure :)

YgraineDance 3 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Great movie; one of a kind. I loved how Rae Dawn Chong’s smart character selected the more intelligent man for her mate, taught him the sound of laughter, and taught him a more loving sexual position in addition to the one he was used to. All that, plus the priceless knowledge of fire. During the movie, you find yourself saying “some of this could have happened this way.”

Blood Circus (2017)
YgraineDance 1 points 3 years ago.

Good story, if not a particularly original one. Excellent, gritty fight scenes with a lead actor I wasn’t familiar with. You felt for him and pulled for him. I loved Red Mohawk Guy’s (unexpected) contribution to the story, and Tom Sizemore has been a quirky favorite of mine since I first caught him in “Passenger 57.” He holds his own here, too. All in all, the picture works because there are not only good action scenes, but also characters you can root for.

The Psychopath Next Door (2013)
YgraineDance 2 points 3 years ago.

This Brit offering was fun; short and sweet. Coming in at a cool 43 minutes, it’s focused on providing enough implication and subtext to characters/events without having to show every single thing. You just “get it” without the points being laboriously spelled out. Worth a watch.

Perry Mason (2020) S1 E1
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

This isn’t horrible, but it’s not great, either. Not yet, anyway. I found myself laughing in some places—-and I wasn’t, and still am not, sure I was supposed to be laughing just then….

Sea Fever (2020)
YgraineDance 2 points 4 years ago.

I wasn’t exactly bowled over by the film, but it did make me want to go learn about the myth of Niamh Cinn Oir. My specialty is Greek/Roman mythology; Irish tales are new to me:)

SheChotic (2018)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

Script was interesting but started to drag in the final third. I didn’t know any of the actors in this story, and while several of them were subpar with their delivery, hats off to all for a good try. They all looked like real people, not Hollywood types.

Protesters are there to protest. Looters are there to loot. And Anarchists just want to see the world burn. If you haven’t been noticing the protesters are turning on, and in, the looters and anarchists. People are always going to take advantage of any situation. Hey, they tried to let you know about what was going on by taking a knee, but people had a real problem with that. “A riot is the language of the unheard.”

YgraineDance 9 points 4 years ago.

Agree. Apparently, people have a real problem with anything other than “Sit down, shut up, and know your place.”

None of us want to see looting, but in our current climate, even peaceful protest gets vilified. What country is this again…? 🤐

Death Race 4: Beyond Anarchy (2018)

Death Race franchise is one of many guilty pleasures. They’re all wild and crazy fun.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014) S7 E14

Much as I dislike the destruction, I hear Sister Kim; rage is only to be expected after these centuries of oppression. This is why rap music can’t (and won’t) die or move to the back burner like other forms—-it’s the pure voice of rage and bravado, being shrieked by the furious. Kim’s remark about how lucky society is that black people want equality, not revenge, was stunningly insightful. I have often thought that very thing, not only about blacks but also about women. As Charlamagne Tha God remarked the other night (and I’m paraphrasing poorly), “People have asked [for decent treatment] and after awhile, they get tired of asking.”
Much respect to John Oliver for once more hitting the nail on the head.

ok… so wait a second.. lol this I see what youre saying. I see the selection but I am not seeing the subs pull up. Its shows “retrieve” then when i click, it says “download” — do i really need to do that? ive never done that before. i always go to the source site… i ve never viewed anything on here directly embedded

YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

No. Go to link 1, open that screen, there is the subs button, and all you do is hit one of them from the long menu. When the people start to speak, up comes their dialogue. I didn’t download a thing…

Hahahaha is that for real, or did you just make that title up? Scratch that—-I am SURE some buncha idjits have made a film by that name. Now I’ll have to go watch it, damn you!! LOL

p.s. I get laughed at for being a diehard Sharknado franchise fan, but I don’t care, those are actually witty and goofy fun, created by people who were clearly having a ball. There’s even a Sharknado slot machine in Vegas.

Ouija Shark (2020)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago*.

Just when you think there can’t be anything worse than “Curse of the Siren”, “Velocipastor”, or “House Shark”, this comes along. At least it was played for laughs, albeit not enough of those. The ending, if you can stick with this movie for that long, features a special person…and I won’t spoil it one bit.😉

Bloodshot (2020)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

Well that was fun!😛 I do love me a crazy action pic, and this one fit the bill. Vin Diesel is usually entertaining with his gruff scenery-chewing, and he didn’t disappoint here. I liked that the ending hinted at possible sequel(s).

…and that ending. WTF? 😕

One Lane Bridge (2020) S1 E6
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

I had to replay A LOT of sentences/conversations not just because of the Kiwi accents (I’ve actually had more trouble with Lancashire voices on shows I like) but also because of the structure of their speech. Not sure if I’m describing it correctly…but it was both hard to decipher not only some sounds, but some meanings as well.

I wasn’t too impressed with the story overall, but that may have to do with the (unfamiliar to me) plot points on regional lore.

Narrow Margin (1990)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

Riveting cat-and-mouse chase thriller from back in the day. Great old favorite actors propel the tale briskly along, and the viewer is right there with them. I hadn’t seen the movie in awhile, and it’s just as good as I remember it. This one, along with movies like “The Conversation” and “The Star Chamber” always merit a re-watch in my book.
Good stuff; do enjoy.

The Last Kingdom (2015) S4 E10
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago*.

I didn’t mention this in previous comments, but meant to do so: the level of dirt and grime seems quite an authentic touch, considering the setting and the times. Everyone has dirt-caked nails, ratty hair, and more. There are muddy “streets” all over the place. Every now and then, some (few) characters look (a little bit) washed, but not often lol. Excellent realism!!

Of course. I meant the team behind the scenes, the ones who, during the show, wished us well from their homes and told us of this solution to the problem of completing the episode. Chill, dude. It wasn’t me who peed in your oatmeal.

The Last Kingdom (2015) S4 E9
YgraineDance 2 points 4 years ago.

The many battle scenes in this show are astoundingly well done. Top-quality sets, costuming, attention to detail, and much more. It’s just really engrossing all around; I did not expect it to be this great when it began several years ago. What a pleasure to have a show of the same high calibre as Vikings. Highly recommended!

e-Virus (2015)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

What a strange little film. It’s only an hour long, and it looks like (and the acting is like) something made by a few buddies who’re just starting out in the movie business.

The premise is that it’s sci-fi, which is what caught my attention, but there’s more lip service to that idea than there is action. Some fakey-looking hand-to-hand fighting is included; nothing special. Watch for a brief epilogue scene placed midway in the closing credits. The whole thing is a real yawner IMO.

An Inspector Calls (2015)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

This is an excellent tale. I can’t say a word more about the plot for fear of giving something away, but this one is a keeper, and has been remade several times. This version is my favorite. Enjoy!

Rebecka Martinsson (2017)
Incessant Chatter 1 points 4 years ago.

You’re welcome… Year, in Iceland families will will have siblings with Ivarsson and Ivarsdottir as the last names. There are other forms of patronyms and names derived from patronyms in cultures all over… In Russian the “middle” name is the father’s name, plus -vich The O’ in Irish names and Mc in Scottish names… Spanish names that end in -ez… Like Alvarez, Ferdnandez.. it’s a common naming system

YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

Cool, isn’t it? 😀 To add one more I liked hearing, I recall in “The Pillars of the Earth” series how people took their trades and skills as surnames. Example: in the story, there was a Tom Builder, and a Caris Wooler. In real world, I know surnames were often descriptive in this way, from around the Middle Ages.

Beauty and the Beast (1987)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago*.

Loved this show back in the day. Vincent was a class act, in spite of his looks. She was nuts about him; who wouldn’t want someone with his good heart and soul? Someone who is down for you and you alone…? yeah….

Rebecka Martinsson (2017)
Incessant Chatter 1 points 4 years ago.

I’m not scandinavian but my understanding is that Icelanders tend to still use the patronymic naming system in the same way the entire Norse culture originally did. The rest of the Scandinavian countries use “surnames” like most of the rest of western countries. Many Scandinavian surnames are derived from the old patronymical names, usually in the masculine form of -son or -sen.

YgraineDance 2 points 4 years ago.

Ah! Thank you so much for the response. That helps me understand a bit better. I’ve asked some form of this question for awhile now, and you are the only one who knew something:-) I even wondered if -sson and -dottir could be in the various names of some siblings.

At the very end of the intro credits, when the woman is unwrapping the sandwich and the wrapping clings to the foot of a man in the next frame…
Plastic wrap??? Not sure whose ‘Oops’. Prop master?
Or was that future Claire eating a ‘journeycake’?
She’s wearing both wedding rings.
A bit jarring juxtaposed with the 18th century.

There’s an apparent continuity error at the end, too. See it?

Still, an excellent cliffhanger till next week!

YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I saw that and wondered why she didn’t chase that anacronism down and hide it in a pocket!
I then thought maybe the moment was deliberate…but why would it be? Then, like you, I wondered if it was just a gaffe by the crew. I doubt it, though….

Siren (2018)
YgraineDance 1 points 4 years ago.

The show is going for diversity, and it’s doing well with it. Black and brown people are everywhere onscreen now, and not just as pimps, mammies, druggies, or whores. We can be real (or fantasy) characters just like the majority race can be. Black and brown people can be found in every corner of the globe in real life—-so it’s high time the media commits to reflecting this. Think on this: IF the social playing field had been level in the FIRST place, no one would have to fretfully bleat about “PC shows that include everyone” now. Sic transit gloria mundi….

Here’s another show that gave us a mesmerizing, cleverly-written and plotted package of fascinating episodes in its first season, only to relapse into formulaic drivel in its second. It was as if the writers couldn’t come up with more new ideas to sustain that level of Jake-magic that had hooked us initially.
