Without knowing how many babies are normally born in a year on this program, we, the viewers have no way of knowing if six is a lot or a little. Congrats to all six for being born, and condolences to their families for not being able to sleep for the next two years.

nikki, almost everything you’ve said is either wrong or irrelevant. Jamal Khashoggi was a Saudi citizen and, like I said, a US resident. Nobody cares what was happening in England 500 years ago. I don’t care what Fred Flinstone got up to back in the Stone Age either. I live in this world at this time. So did Khashoggi, before he was murdered.
Am I even close to being aware of what’s happening in Thailand? Well, seeing as I live about half my life there, yes. And we were talking about what happens when you get on the wrong side of a god-king, not the military junta that rules Thailand. You’re switching focus and pretending they’re the same.
Are you now trying to defend undemocratic military dictatorships as well?
How stupid or naive this bloke was it irrelevant. That’s a really dumb justification for extrajudicial murder.
Your strange ideas about absolute monarchy being an effective form of government simply show that you have no knowledge of history. There’s a reason why it was called the Dark Ages and why European culture only flourished once checks were placed on the power of those born to imagined divinity.

nikkimckelvy -1 points 3 years ago.

My position, sans insults, has always been that we don’t have the right to force one culture onto another. Who are we to judge? Do you rule an entire government? Let’s take your comments as you’ve made them.
“Nobody cares what was happening in England 500 years ago”. You brought up England and the monarchy there. If you don’t like it, don’t bring it into the debate. I argued that it didn’t apply when I said that they were different cultures and didn’t apply, QE 2 is the exception, and the monarchs of England have historically committed murder and much worse over bad publicity. That is a crime punishable by death even under many modern governments.
As for Thailand, I argue that they are the same, but you point out that the European culture (implying monarchies in general) only flourished one a constitutional monarchy came into power. My response, “Like Thailand, now? Right?” Constitutional monarchies only work in certain environments. Absolute monarchies work in others. God-kingdoms work in other situations. All governments flourish under some circumstances and flounder under others.
As for the journalist’s murder, it wasn’t extrajudicial. The king has absolute power. He’s completely within his right.
I maintain my position that the journalist in question was suicidally stupid. He knew the risk, and he should have used a representative.

The Rachel Maddow Show (2008) S2021 E37
Paul Wombat 4 points 3 years ago.

Who are we to question that?
Well, I am a person who doesn’t like butchery and murder, particularly the murder of a US resident by a foreign leader who then had excuses made for him by the previous US president. Who actually bragged that he had protected the Saudi prince from being answerable for his murderous actions!
I can question the queen of my country (that’s QE2). I can say pretty much anything I want about her.
Same with the royals from Holland or Sweden or wherever.
Thailand has really strict legal protections for its king. But nobody gets murdered for breaching them. Certainly no journalists writing for US newspapers.
The day any of these god-kings start murdering journalists who are the legitimate residents of a foreign country that is supposedly a democracy that respects the rule of law - like the US - and suffer no consequences, is the day that I’ll start taking a really severe dislike to them as well.
Oh yeah. The fact that this douchebag thinks he is some representative of god who has the right to kill people and the fact that what you think are the ‘interests of his country’ so conveniently align with his own desire for brutal and murderous revenge, is not any kind of valid and reasonable excuse for any rational, decent human being.

nikkimckelvy -3 points 3 years ago.

“murder of a US resident by a foreign leader who then had excuses made for him by the previous US president.” -The journalist in question was Turkish, and I don’t agree with Trump much either.
“I can question the queen of my country (that’s QE2). I can say pretty much anything I want about her.
Same with the royals from Holland or Sweden or wherever.” - Those are completely different cultures. A better comparison would be looking at England down through the ages, and shall we discuss what the kings did to people who insulted them 1500 years ago? QE2 is fantastic, but she’s the exception, not the rule, when it comes to questioning a monarch.
“Thailand has really strict legal protections for its king. But nobody gets murdered for breaching them. “ Are you even close to being aware of what’s happening in Thailand right now? There’s a ton of fighting b/c it’s illegal to question their government.
“respects the rule of law - like the US - and suffer no consequences,” Americans just got rid of an a— who didn’t respect the rule of law and suffered no consequences- but I digress.
“The fact that this douchebag thinks he is some representative of god who…” He, and his people, honestly believe that there is something superior in their blood. English kings and queens argued that point for over a millennium. Historically speaking, the God-King philosophy has proven itself to be one of the most effective forms of governance.
I’m not arguing the rightness or wrongness of the prince’s actions. I’m saying that this is a conflict of ideoloigies. I’m also saying that journalist was suicidally stupid for writing that and then entering into that embassy. He can write it, but he should not have expected anything good from that government. He could have hired a representative to go in there for him.

I know that the U.S. press doesn’t like Saudi Arabia, but I have to say this as someone who has lived there. I’m not a Muslim, but the crown prince and the king both sincerely believe that their sultanate was given to their ancestors by their god and it is written in the genealogy of the Quran as dictated to their prophet. There is no higher authority at all, and they sincerely believe that no one has the right to question that… as that reporter did. In the prince’s mind, all he did was protect his country… like every good leader should do. In any sovereignty, you can never question or disobey the sovereign… ever. That reporter did. Frankly, I think the reporter was super stupid to go to the embassy. The prince’s actions may have been (to our minds) unethical, amoral and inappropriate, but in his mind, it’s his responsibility and his right to stop insurgency. It’s been his right for roughly 1500 years. Who are we to question that?

DJT only has himself to blame for that. His other lawyers quit before
the trial started. They refused to use the defense that DJT demanded.

I think there will be more GOP senators vote to convict than we may think.
Time will tell. Today’s vote for witnesses was 55 yes & 45 no. Meaning five
GOP senators voted to have witnesses, unlike his FIRST impeachment trial.

That’s what I was saying. We shouldn’t mock, degrade, or insult the only lawyer who is standing up for DJT.

With all respect, Trump’s lawyer has had a week to prepare, and this is the trial of his life. On the one hand, it’s a boon. It’s the trial of his life and his career, and it’s almost a guaranteed acquittal. This is a game changing, life changing, bragging rights forever trial for him. On the other hand, he’s couldn’t have had enough time to prepare, this is not his field, his client isn’t a good person, and his more experienced co-council is basically sitting this out due to his religious beliefs. I don’t think this guy needs to be judged for being ill-prepared b/c his win is guaranteed and due to circumstances beyond his control, there was no way he could have had time to prepare. The eleven minute idiocy of having everyone, including civilians, saying, “fight,” is almost understandable. It’s hypocrital (AKA lawyering), but it’s underderstandable.

I think the word you are looking for is “precedent”, so there really isn’t a pun involved. Seems you have no understanding of what the impeachment trial is about. It is not a criminal trial. It is a political one. There is no possibility of jail time. The repercussions, if convicted, is that he would be removed from office. Obviously that has already occurred, so the only purpose of the trial at this point is that, if convicted, a simple majority vote could prevent him from holding office again. So sorry, no criminals would be arguing your assumption, and no trial judge would accept it as a defense. The Supreme Court might get involved on the question of ‘constitutionality’, although I doubt it. But no, the Constitution make no allowance for the Supreme Court to “counteract” if the senators decide to acquit, which seems like a foregone conclusion at this point, since at least 17 republicans would have to join with all of the democrats to convict.

Has anyone ever considered the president (no pun intended) that the former president’s arguments are setting? Look at it like this, “After I embezzled the money, the company fired me, so you cannot give me any criminal consequences because I no longer work for the company.” You could even state, “After I killed the man, I no longer worked for his company, so I can’t have any legal repercussions because he was no longer my employer!” This is what criminals all over the world will be arguing, and there isn’t a judge in America who will be able to counteract it because the Senate trial of the former president is the highest court. Can the Supreme Court counteract if the senators decide to acquit?

I’m really enjoying this program. I love that I don’t know as much as I would like about the subject matter, but instead of talking down to the audience or sounding like know-it-alls themselves, the hosts take the viewer on a journey learning about the history, artwork, and artists themselves. I like that it’s a learning experience for the hosts as well as the viewers. Even the experts are learning but everything is done in such a way so that viewers like me who have to read books on how to understand and appreciate fine art, don’t feel left out.

Has anyone else noticed how every, single country in the world is laughing at us right now? Putin and Chairman Xi don’t have to do any campaigning to end their governments and crown themselves autocrats because the U.S. is so hated internationally that their people are begging for them to become kings. We need to get our heads out of our collective a—es and understand that the division in the U.S. just means that things need to CHANGE. Out of the thousands of cultures we have in this country, what is emerging is a brand new culture. It’s not based on one skin color or ideal or belief. What is coming out of us is totally different. It’s not bad. It’s actually beautiful, but every ideal, belief and whatever else will change to bring about this new one.

This is not for everyone, but it’s not bad. This is a polarizing film with people voicing strong opinions on both sides. It’s worth watching once as an adult so that you’ll have a strong opinion about it. For lack of a better way to explain it, it’s a story, and it’s worth being told- for good or bad, it’s worth being told.

With all due respect to Ms. Maddow’s bifurcated glasses, the a—hole is out of office. I feel like I have PTSD every time his name is mentioned. I am a common civilian who feels relieved at the change, and I’m an Independent. I have maintained for decades that we need more than two political parties, and we need more than one candidate representing each political party. That having been writ, I’m much more concerned with Biden’s polices than what I am with his proverbial draft picks. My advice, don’t even mention the T word. Don’t give him the honor or any more attention. Say something like, “The former president…” and let’s keep his trash down to less than half of the show. I want to move on.

I wouldn’t mind seeing an End of Days episode- not zombie apocalypse- more realistic. You know, in the 19th century, many people couldn’t read, but they could vote, so they would buy a newspaper just to look at the political cartoons and get information that way. Political satirists helped to end slavery that way, and they helped to influence elections. For that reason, they needed bodyguards, and that’s what Stephen Colbert reminds me of. What gets to me on this is very simple. Republicans are refusing to go through a metal detector when they have armed criminals attacking their place of work. They are wanting to bring weapons when they have armed security who are supposed to protect them but fail. Now compare this to American schoolchildren who have to go through metal detectors and refuse even though they have armed criminals attacking their place of work. Children feel the need to bring weapons to class even though they have armed security to protect them. I want to tell them to stop the double standard. Get rid of the guns, metal detectors, and everything else completely or embrace all of it, but do not expect school children to be more mature than what you are!

Let me start off by saying, I’m completely against judging someone based on something as stupid as the shade of their melanin. That having been said, I get angry when people compare the BLM protests to the insurgents at the Capitol building. LOCATION MATTERS! If the tactics used at BLM protests were used at the Capitol, even more lives would have been lost, there would have been more bloodshed and violence in the Capitol would have been much worse. Is. that what BLM wants? I don’t think so! I don’t! This is the CAPITOL! This is the seat of governance. We don’t want more bloodshed there! Blame the a——le in the White House for not deescalating the situation. Blame whichever terrorist group you want, but do NOT compare the protest. Those officers risked everything to keep our government safe. They need to be commended, not reprimanded for their actions. We need to be thankful that the violence was not much worse. There’s no good outcome to the entire government if the police had used the same tactics that they had used at BLM protests at the Capitol. They protected our government, and they should be honored for not using that violence.
