Yes - amazing! I actually have a Gary Oldman playlist already, for exactly the same reason. Time for Cate Blanchett playlist - great idea!

TURN: Washington's Spies (2014) S2 E7
expresso 3 points 9 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I would have to rank this as the strangest episode in any AMC show I have ever watched, I’m not sure what they were trying to achieve in terms of “the madness of George Washington” - maybe there’s a historical back story I’m not aware of - coming out the other side, you end up being less impressed with every character in the show. A minor glitch in what is otherwise one of the most enjoyable historical dramas ever made.

I had been looking forward to seeing this, after reading several articles about it, but 7 minutes and 29 seconds into it, I realized I don’t really give a crap about Pete Davidson, or anything he does and says.
Maybe when he’s grown up and has developed any kind of talent.
Maybe…

expresso 3 points 3 years ago.

Same comment, other than to note for me it was around 9 minutes. I’m a generous person.

I like my Vulcans a little more Vulcan-y. Those OS Vulcans knew how to cut with no snark, emotion, condescention whatsoever. Her father was…eyeroll… That being said, the premise of the episode is classic Star Trek, even the kitschy “interdimensional space” felt super-corny and right, and “Charades” is definitely the kind of thing that James T Kirk would pull out of his butt to stall in a situation like that. 5/5 phasers

Earth (2023) S1 E1
expresso 3 points 9 months ago*.

Impressive! Lots of new material here about the mass extinction event in the Permian. This is a new narrator to me - I’m Team Brian Cox and David Attenborough but he is A team material. Even for typically excellent BBC nature series, the cinematography and locations are incredibly gorgeous and well shot. 5/5

That’s some amazing mousse Pike’s got. He’s tackling bad guys, having romps in the hay and getting smacked over the head and knocked out—and his crazy sifi hairdo stays up thru alla that.

Not sure but I’m pretty certain that one gray/stripey alien was Armin Shimerman—AKA the actor who played the ferengi, Quark from TNG et al. IMDB has done a lousy job of listing extras and guest stars lately.

I thought the same thing when I saw him…

Birdsforme 5 points 1 year ago*.

This episode could also have been called “Looking at things through your eyes”. Much of the episode was about seeing things through the others perspective. I also remember an episode from the first Star trek that had parts of Spocks dream complete with the sound effects. It was season 2. episode 5, and called “Amok Time”

expresso 3 points 1 year ago*.

Hah. I saw “Spock Amok” as a sly homage to “Duck Amuck” (where the animator is in godmode messing around with Daffy).

Raised by Wolves (2020)
marino4ever 11 points 3 years ago*.

The first 3 episodes were very good. A promising start.

The two leads, Amanda Collin (Mother) and Abubakar Salim (Father) are fantastic. Their characters and performances command attention at all times. I’m not entirely sold on the central conflict of the story, as it felt heavy handed. I hope it justifies itself in the long run, although I have my doubts. Still, I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

expresso 3 points 3 years ago*.

I thought about what you said. Yeah. I think the heavy-handed-ness is a throwback to classic Original Star Trek. Think William Shatner and We Are Making This Point By Hitting You With A 2x4. In other words, it’s (glorious) melodrama. To me people are reacting exactly the same way as when the Witcher came out (how dare you not be serious !!! with my TV) and that is refreshing because we all have too much deadly serious on our plates now.

The Winter King (2023)
Mikeonalpha 5 points 8 months ago.

the best film interpretation of the legend is still Boorman’s Excaliber - comes across as over the top and cheesy at times - but it really captured the sense of myth and “magic” of it all. And it was a great cast.

expresso 3 points 8 months ago.

I’ll put in my standard plug for Legend of the Sword here. The lighthearted Guy Ritchieness of the script distracts from the heavy handling of the legend and the swordplay which are amazing.
