The North Water (2021)
TX2Guns 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I am cautiously optimistic with TV series in 2021 but this one looks to be a good one. Based on the novel by the same name it has an A+ cast and an engaging script. The dark and gritty 19th century English atmosphere reminded me of Taboo somewhat so Let’s see if this dark tale of skullduggery holds water! FYI: This one is definitely not for the squeamish! Really enjoyed the rendition of “Roll the Old Chariot Along” at the end..one of the best sea shanties ever!

Lansky (2021)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

FYI: This is NOT a gangster movie but a very slow moving and at times wandering biopic of one of the most pivotal and successful people in organized crime in the 20th century. As always, Keitel delivers in spades (when he has a scene) as does John Magaro who plays the younger Lansky, but way too much time and dialogue is spent on Worthington’s bland character instead of Lansky’s Life and it gives the film a very disjointed feel overall.

John Adams (2008)
snazzydetritus 1 points 2 years ago*.

This is an outstanding and eminently watchable miniseries, and so well-acted. If I remember correctly, the fellow who played Stannis Baratheon on GOT plays Thomas Jefferson.

TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

You are correct, Stephen Dillane plays Jefferson.

John Adams (2008)

Since the actual vote at the Continental Congress for the United State to be free and independent ocurred 245 years ago today I thought I might this binge this awesome series again.

The Tomorrow War (2021)
[deleted]
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

A Bastardization of Edge of Tomorrow and Startship Troopers with a ridiculous plot that is full of holes. Typical mindless summer fun flick. 20% survival rate of the drafted civilians you send in without proper training and inferior weapons? Yeah you all deserve to be eradicted from the earth. You are all MORONS. Get to the Choppa!!

No Sudden Move (2021)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

Really slick script by Solomon, I am going to watch this another couple of times just to appreciate all the angles and dialogue. Soderbergh’s use of the various lenses to capture that 50’s noir motif/feel is really nice. Combine all of this with a really tight cast (I thought Liotta was fantastic) and you got yourself a really well done crime flick.

Really! You have my attention! I thought it was supernatural? “Dark” is in my top favorites of all time…I thought it was genius, trippy and very, very well planned out. Is it really that good!? What is it that reminds you of “Dark”? Is it clever, Trippy or Twisted? Without giving anything away can you elaborate? Also are there subs? Thanx

TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This show is nothing like Dark, it is a Brazilian crime hybrid with supernatural (witchcraft) elements. Yeah the English subs are solid.

Bosch (2015) S7 E8
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

It’s a sad day. Harry Bosch is over! (yeah I know the spin off is coming but I doubt they will bring back ALL of the great supporting characters, in particular Crate and Barrel, two of my favorite TV Detectives since Mackey and Gardocki) And while the main story line for Season 7 was superbly crafted L.A. Noir and could stand up to any of the other past seasons. I will say when the side story with Lt. Billets began I thought it was going to be tropish shite but actually turned out to parallel the main storyline (The value choices we make in life that sometime cost us something) All in all, this was a GREAT final season to an amazing series. It goes without saying I will be hearing “Can’t let go” by Caught a Ghost (the opening credits theme song) in my head for a long, long time! Damn, I am gonna miss this show! 😭

Bosch (2015) S7 E7

The standoff between Chief and Bosch was classic. “Motherf*cker get out!” Damn!

I enjoyed when the Narc detective asked J Edgar if he’s seen The Wire - LOL

TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

Man has good taste in crime series. Major props.

Bosch (2015)
Alien 1 points 2 years ago.

Final season. :(

TX2Guns 2 points 2 years ago.

Don’t remind me, I am trying to live in denial for these 8 episodes. :)

Bosch (2015)
Alien 3 points 2 years ago.

Well, yeah, I guess he deserves some credit. :) Though, most of my adoration goes to Titus Welliver. But none of this could have been possible without the outstanding performances of the entire cast.

TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

True, takes two to tango, but a good crime series begins and end with the script and if Connelly was not involved to ensure quality control I can almost promise you this series would have been a DUD and not the amazing saga it has become.

Bosch (2015) S7 E1
TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago.

Season 7 is going to be based on Connelly’s 17th Bosch Novel The Burning Room and after Episode 1 I can tell it’s not going to disappoint. So nice to have decent crime writing back on TV, even if it is going to be short lived!

Bosch (2015)
Alien 3 points 2 years ago.

Hot damn! Bosch is back.

TX2Guns 2 points 2 years ago.

I second that Hot Damn 👍
Finally some decent crime TV from the one and only Michael Connelly!

Short Eyes (1979)

One of the grittiest prison movies from the late 70’s. Not for the feint of heart.

Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2006)

Really well done mid-20th century period piece biopic of Great Britain’s most notorious hangman and criminals. Timothy Spall did a fantastic job.

I had to keep pausing to see if I could catch a glimpse of my house in the background. But just didn’t quite get it. Btw, in the earlier episode where Ray goes to pick up the dead girl from the fancy house with finished concrete walls, that house is just down the coast from the beach scenes in this episode.

TX2Guns 2 points 2 years ago.

That’s Cool! 👍

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

Intense, off beat movie with one of my favorite actors, John Hawkes.

Ravenous (1999)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

This is definitely one of my favorite Dark westerns, right up there with Bone Tomahawk. The script was loosely based on the life of cannibal Alfred Packer. Really solid writing and superb acting by all involved, including one of my favorite period actors, Jefferey Jones.

The Salton Sea (2002)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

One of the top 10 best under the radar crime movies of the last 20 years. Val Kilmer is excellent but IMO D’Onofrio steals the show as the nose (less) meth king pin.

Capernaum (2018)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago*.

Good movie but a Tough watch. Next time you start feeling like your life is so hard and unbearable, watch this movie and re-evaluate. I felt more anger toward the parents than anything. Sad Deal.

Grenslanders (2019)

A solid turd of a series. One dimensional and tropish.

Barkskins (2020)

Too bad they cancelled this one, it had promise. Unlike series like Frontier which are filled with terrible accents and simple storylines, this one had a really original script.

Katla (2021) S1 E8
TX2Guns 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

After the first episode I thought this was going to be some type of Icelandic crime hybrid but it quickly devolved into a tedious soap opera with the Director eventually trying to rely on some well used Doppelganger tropes to add some “excitement.” This was one of those scripts where it started off with a semi-solid ideal, but the execution got muddled with too much “psychological” dialogue and character sub-plots to be effective.

Katla (2021) S1 E1
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

I wasn’t sure about this one going in, as Netflix has been known to do some pretty awful foreign “Eco thrillers” but after the first episode I think it’s fair to say this is not one of those, at least not as a stereo-type. It kind of reminded me of a combination of the French Les Revenants and the Crime Noir-Supernatural hybrid Jordskott. As with most Icelandic offerings, The writing is good and the characters interesting, so let’s see where this one goes.

Triumph (2021)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

Really inspiring and uplifting movie based on the Amazing true story of screen writer Michael D. Coffey. It stars RJ Mitte (who played Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad) in the lead role, who actually suffers from cerebral palsy. Great story about overcoming adversity and never giving up!

Mr Inbetween (2018) S3 E5
TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago.

The scene with them staking out the beach with Ray’s daughter was hilarious. Been there done that when my daughter was that age. It’s interesting how Ray is changing this season, all for the better it seems.

Angel Heart (1987)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

This is one of my top 5 Mickey Rourke movies. Alan Parker did a great job with both the script and Directing. The Crime Noir Private Detective feel throughout with both the foreshadowing and character development is top notch.

Das Boot (2018)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

I really wanted to like this series but ultimately it fell flat with me. The script was way too ambitious, especially the “resistance” storyline. This was based on a book about U-boats, why turn it into a WW2 soap opera? I’ll stick with the 1981 movie which is still the pinnacle of WW2 UBoat movies IMO.

Good doc. I mostly wanted to hear from Levon Helm and he talks quite a bit in it so that was nice. Personally they would have not become what they were without him and Robbie knows it. Seeing Peter Gabriel, heck I didn’t even recognize him. Man were are all getting old for sure. 4/5

As I was re-watching Nic Pizzolatto’s AMAZING First season of True Detective, I was reminded that South Louisiana is the place where crime writers (such as James Lee Burke) like to mine their gritty narratives. Nic Pizzolatto is one of the best American crime series screenwriters working IMO. Season 1 of True Detective is his Masterpiece. I remember reading this novel on a trip and not putting it down for three hours. Definitely not an uplifting tale but as far as character studies go in crime novels, this is the goods.

As I expected, this series did not disappoint. Tightly wound, intense drama with great pacing and amazing acting. It was awesome to see Siobhan Finneran (From Happy Valley) in this. Amazing actress. As would be expected from McGovern this is not just a “prison” drama, it is multi-layered with great characters.

Jimmy McGovern is a solid, no-nonsense writer not afraid to keep it real. Pair that with two amazing actors like Bean and Graham and I am looking forward to this one.

Decent Documentary but please, stop with the race card BS. The racial non-sense these so called “experts” and “moderators” (yeah right) were saying about the great Cus D’amato was a HUGE load of crap. That man LOVED Mike. Besides even if D’amato was a quote “opportunist” are you trying to tell me that Don King and all his corrupt imps were not? Give me a break. The record speaks for itself. When D’amato passed and Mike started listening to King, that was the beginning of the end for him.
