The 100 Scandals segment is where Biden needs to focus more IMHO. Coronavirus is good, but people are starting to think Biden is a one trick pony. They forget the horror that is Trump and the terrible things he’s said and done while in office.

Aw shucks, super duper sorry that being black in America means that you can be murdered in the street by cops who face no consequences. It should be so much more light-hearted to be shot dead in your home, or walking down the street, or driving a car. If Trevor Noah and his writing staff would just make more jokes about having a skin color that serves as an arbitrary death sentence, I sure would get to laugh more. Cause we NEED funny right now. Racism is a real bummer, huh? Sure wish people didn’t take it so darn seriously.

nikkimckelvy 1 points 3 years ago.

I wasn’t saying that at all. Think about all the fighting that happened in the late 1960’s and 70’s. Monty Python poked fun at it in The Quest for the Holy Grail. Humor, done correctly, brings about as much social change as hatred does, and Mr. Noah has talent enough to do that. I’m all for reforming the police. They kill more white people than black people, and frankly, they shouldn’t be killing anyone. I’m simply saying that Mr. Noah has the ability to get people to laugh at how stupid the police are being and bring about social change that way. Goodness knows we need all the ways to bring it about.

While I understand that racism is important to the host (and to me too), I get tired of hearing about it every, single episode. Laughing at something is just as powerful as hating. It can be used as an equal motivator for stoping something evil, like racism. There are a million chances for jokes that he is missing where this show would be ten times funnier and just as effective against racism. We NEED to laugh right now. With all the horror that’s happening around us, we NEED funny. This guy hasn’t delivered a good, solid laugh in a long time. He needs new writers.

nikkimckelvy -1 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I know this is a polarizing issue, and anything I write will be down voted. I’ve lived much of my life outside of the U.S, and the police are more violent here than what they are in the vast majority of other countries I’ve been to. The denizens here may be right in claiming that the police kill more white people than they do black people, but truth be told, the police in other countries don’t kill. Someone’s melanin should not matter, black, white, red, yellow, brown or swirl isn’t important, and the police shouldn’t be killing at all. I firmly believe in police reform for this country, and it should be All Lives Matter!

I speak Chinese, and what that professor is saying is accurate. It took me aback also because, when I was in China and Taiwan (especially Taiwan), everywhere I turned I heard someone using that term. I even asked some Taiwanese friends about it because I hate racism. They said they didn’t realize it, and it was nothing against anyone of any color. I think the professor could have used a much better example, but he’s not using it to promote racism. If he should be chastised, it should be for not using a better example. His students clearly weren’t ready for it. I wasn’t when I first learned Chinese and moved to Asia.

It was a $20 counterfeit bill, YOU could even have one and spend one with out having any idea of it. Also It doesn’t matter if a crime was committed or not there was no reason for him to be hauled out of the vehicle and killed after he was detained.

nikkimckelvy 0 points 3 years ago.

I agree his death was unnecessary, but truth be told, there are a bunch of other cases where minorities are needlessly killed by the police and they don’t get the publicity they deserve. His was filmed. What about the disappearance of the Native American women? Have you even heard about that? Brianna was asleep in her bed. How about the increased violence against Asians, Muslims, gays in this country? I think you and I are saying the same thing, but I maintain that Brianna would have been the better rallying call.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (2015) S2020 E145
nikkimckelvy -2 points 3 years ago.

Brianna would have been the better than George Ffloyd. George was in the process of committing a felony, but Brianna was shot and killed by police officers while she was asleep in her bed. The police officers were serving no knock search warrant, and went to the wrong address. They killed Brianna Taylor, and arrested her boyfriend for trying to defend himself from being attacked and murdered in his own home by said police. George Ffloyd’s murder was video recorded, but Brianna’s wasn’t which is why he gets the attention. Brianna was innocent, and her family cannot even sue the police officers (who couldn’t read an address!) for murdering her innocent daughter. All Lives Matter.

Though the Hebrew parts of the Old Testament were written between the 6th and 5th century BCE (Torah), the Bible as we know it, or as close a proximity to it as possible today, was not written/compiled till 325CE during the First Council of Nicaea under the Roman Emperor Constantine. The writting of the Quran on the other hand started in 609CE and was finished in 632CE.

nikkimckelvy 0 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

True, but the Jews were master copyists. Their texts are A) basically identical and B) the most prolific in the ancient world. The First Council of Nicaea was more for the Greek Testament. If you want, I’ll get into the criteria that they followed to determine which books should be included in the Christian Bible. If would refer you to “The Case for Christ,” if you want to dig a little deeper, and I can point you to the actual sources that were used.

Islam, Women and Me (2018)
nikkimckelvy 2 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Just the fact that there’s a Muslim woman saying, “Hell yeah,” made this show interesting. Autism is passed on via the men. If two of her children have autism, it’s from the father not from her. Especially for. its time, the Quran gives amazing rights to women, but preexisting cultural norms take most of those rights away. A muslim man has the right to beat his wife, but a muslim woman also has the right to beat her husband. She has the right to an equal education, but most muslim countries won’t let a woman express her opinion in any way (nothing written, verbal, or any form of communication) without her male protector’s permission. A muslim woman has the right to vote if she owns land, but she does not have the right to keep her vote secret, and she must vote the way her male protector tells her to vote. She has the right to own land, but she must relinquish all her property when she marries, and she does not have the right to remain single. The second part of my last three sentences are all cultural conditions existing before the Quran.
I’m not muslim. I’m a Christian, but I’ve got a degree in comparative religions, and I love studying all of this. I’ve studied Islam, and I reject it. Jesus Christ is God, but I believe in respecting religions.

I think I’m the lone dissenting voice here, but frankly, this show sucks. The acting is decent, I’ll grant that, but other than that, the script goes nowhere, it contradicts itself constantly, it’s clearly not thought out at all, nothing at all is explained, and we’re two seasons in. Let’s not forget Vanya. She is the villainess and responsible for two apocalypses and we’re still supposed to see her as a good guy who doesn’t need to be held accountable for her actions?! This is a piece of crap show, and I’m having to force myself; to watch it. It could have been good and highly intelligent, but if you want your braincells to die, watch. For every intelligent person, this should be a hard pass.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (2015) S2020 E137
nikkimckelvy -1 points 3 years ago.

I do enjoy this show, but I’ve got two major problems with it. He needs to be coming up with several funny euphemisms for sex and not cussing, and secondly, he’s concentrating on the African American racism and not on the racism that other minorities face. Racism isn’t just about being black. Asian, Latin, Jewish and Native American communities all face discrimination. Something has been causing the women in many Native American communities to disappear. This doesn’t get publicized, and this is even more severe than African American racism because Native American communities are facing genocide.

The New Legends of Monkey (2018)
nikkimckelvy 0 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I am super glad they brought this back! Yeah! Bad thing- the kid should have been about 10 years older. He’s not a bad actor, but his character is unbelievable, and it would have been better if they’d tried for a love triangle between Monkey, Trip, and the bounty hunter. I also find it repulsive that this is a family oriented show and it’s encouraging children to fight.
Good things- the crazy, silly characters are back! I love Monika. I like her sass.
I won’t say the ending, but if they don’t bring him back, all of the producers deserve to be roasted on a spit! Enjoy

Wow this one was out there! Even for a series that’s not known for keeping it’s feet on the ground (in this case, “What ground?”) this episode really was strange, and offensive, and pensive, and just exceptional. I can’t tell if it’s exceptionally good or bad. It’s just woah! It’s choppy and sickening, and art, and you can’t stop watching it. It’s like an abusive relationship. You feel violated and still come back for more.

I am trying to get into this series. I am, but all the episodes are out of order. They’re even labeled wrongly on the videos themselves, and the series is so visually dark that I don’t want to look at it. The subject matter is dark, so I understand the symbolism, but the episodes are so visually dark that they are distracting. Watch only if you’re bored and don’t mind not being able to follow the plot or the acting because you cannot see the actors.

The Adventures of Hercules (1985)

Thanks. The point I was getting at, and should have tried to make more clearly, is that for a long time (that 1-2% diff. has been true for ages) there have been at least as many women as men but they’re only nowadays beginning to catch up getting cast in the lead roles.

nikkimckelvy 1 points 3 years ago.

Quite true.

Cursed (2020)
etim 7 points 3 years ago*.

Women outnumber men and white people will soon be a minority in the US (they already are with kids 16 and under) so I’d say that casting a lot more women and minorities is WAY past due.
But personally, I’d rather see good lookin’ women on my screen than a bunch of pretty men with bulging muscles. But I’m a non-incel heterosexual so my preferences may be biased like that.

nikkimckelvy 0 points 3 years ago.

Just FYI, results for the 2020 census aren’t in yet, and in the 2010 census, women outnumber men by only 1 or 2 %- negligible at best. As for the future white minority, that may well be, but again the results aren’t yet in, and frankly, I like all colors. Souls are more important than skin colors, and all souls are beautiful.

Pride and Prejudice (1940)
nikkimckelvy 1 points 3 years ago.

This rendition won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1940, and it clearly earned it. Although it differs with the book in a few areas it consistently maintains the spirit of the book. Additionally, it is the originator of several lines that are found in subsequent renditions but are not found in the book. It’s quite excellent.
