Season 2 is my favorite to date. Granted, the multiple storylines were kind of hard to keep up with at first though. The list of stars that had recurring roles was impressive, to say the least, with Zahn McClarnon’s powerful portrayal of Hanzee Dent being my favorite of that season. The ending was the most emotional to date, although the setup for the end of season 5 promises to equal that if not surpass it, and the way it tied into season one was masterful. All in all, one of my favorite seasons of television ever.

Los Enchiladas! (1999)
grasshopper rex 4 points 10 months ago.

I love Mitch Hedberg’s stand-up. The shows would start with the audience confused and it looking like he was going to bomb, but slowly they began to catch on to his style and by the end he had usually won them over. Such a unique and humble talent gone too soon.

The U.S. and the Holocaust (2022)

Another brilliant offering by Ken Burns and a stark reminder of how little of the nasty history of our nation we are taught. He should be in charge of the history curriculum in our public school system.

Another thorough, illuminating, and thought-provoking documentary by Ken Burn’s. Forever shortsighted, will we ever learn to respect and live in harmony with our planet and the other species we share it with?

Scrapper (2023)
grasshopper rex 4 points 4 months ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Loved this little indie film that was not only the debut offering of Charlotte Regan as director and writer, but also a brilliant performance by newcomer Lola Campbell in the lead role. This reminded me in many ways of the movie that caused me to fall in love with Tatum O’Neal when I was but a wee lad myself, Paper Moon. A scrapper, in many ways, you can’t help but root for her. The “color” commentary from those in her life was genius.

Ok This is an integral part of the new “TOOL and HANDYMAN” trend..
This Tool is close friend with the “gardner” and the “Beekeeper” all sharing the same shed so to say.
The new cinematic “Tool/Hammer universe.” We have from Marvel studios noticed an falloff in our ticket sales and noticed this peculiar takeup in homestead Diy interest. We wish you a happy coming next 5 years with The Rake, Hammer Happy, Mr Nail, New Exiting Backyard Shed Rendezvous with Shovel and Stick and their naughty Podlings, and of corse Bonkers in the Bucket with Britt Lawnmover.

Holy sh!t they’re milking this franchise to death. I didn’t even like the first one that much, looked too cartoonish.

A 13 year wait for a sequel of the highest grossing movie of all time doesn’t qualify as “milking it to death”. lol

The Last of Us (2023)
augusts1 1 points 1 year ago.

Good to know. I think probably in the wake of The Waking Dead ending last year that fanbase is desperate for more, so anything halfway decent that resembles it is going to get huge praise. That is my best guess.

I loved TWD but around season 6 or so I tapped out since it just got to be too depressing despite how good it was. It was always people constantly grieving the deaths of the other characters. I suspect this show is probably a similar dynamic too but I’ll watch the 1st epi & give it a chance at least.

grasshopper rex 7 points 1 year ago.

Episode 3 changed my mind. I’ll be watching the rest of it.

Southern Survival (2020)
nowt 1 points 3 years ago*.

They all are simplistic; even the books are too short.
The South moves; The North moves. The Coasts are a thing; Cities are a thing; Country [in that Nashville way] and Flyover Country are a thing. The OP refers to a mindset, and that mindset referred as being of The South, as that’s where the mindset itself has held the most power historically, referencing itself by The South while doing so. And readily voiced as Country or Hick or Redneck across the nation. Imprecise synonyms where the cardinal direction itself is a large meta-tag that only exists because of the density of the type so tagged in certain regions, but the regions themselves are amorphous and nebulous af. The show above doesn’t just appeal to The South by its title alone.
It may not be helpful. It may also be helpful. Sometimes, Fncking Beware the Fncking Dog: It’ll Bite You and Make You Dotarded carries more weight. They are dismissed and demonized with reason: The ridiculous gets ridiculed when it’s shown ridiculous and still does its damage for being a religion in all its trappings of sophistry. That they are people makes them partial product of their environment; that they far outnumber violent criminals, working their damage passive-aggressively at yet greater cost both to the world, economically and environmentally [etc]; and to the liberal experiment the USA is, is deserving of scorn. There are untenable positions which bear too much poisonously radioactive fruit. There isn’t a Violent Crime Party; there is an American version far nearer to the worst of Europe’s last century and the shameful past of America’s own last century and the centuries’ prior, than mindsets of that type have been part of, validated by, cultivated for in quite awhile. Fascism’s up. There are signs. Antifascist signs may get planted wherever.
Those like them always plague every society. Their positions adapt to destroy and limit what is Other, even if they themselves do not evolve.
Invective is a rhetorical device. Whether apodioxis or bdelygmia; aganactesis or vituperation. You prefer medela; that’s fine. They each have their moment; Beta’s moment wasn’t yours.
Civil in text need not be granted to that which has already been rendered Bitey Fncking Dotard Infectious Dog.

While I possess neither your rich vocabulary skills or your obvious superior education as I am just a poorly educated product of the economically deprived south, I do have almost 60 years of rl experience combating ignorance and hate from the perspective of being a vocal antiracist atheist living in Texas.
As a younger man I was very confrontational and combative when dealing with ignorance and hate. After years of this unproductive approach I adopted a different tactic. Finding common ground and putting forth a real face to their irrational fear of the other has proven to achieve actual postive results and that should be the goal. It’s easy to look down from what we deem to be a morally superior vantage point and condemn the other, but how does that help to change the world for the better? And then there is the obvious irony of fearing and hating what we don’t understand.
Those at the top of the food chain amuse themselves and profit greatly from pitting us against each other. Why play their game and allow them to win?

I Googled and found the site you copy pasted the “predictive programming” definition from. You seem confident you learned something. How can you be so sure? Recent History does not allow for that level of trust in main stream media anymore.

Here’s the scoop. This is not just the movie chopped up. Back in 2020 while working on the Elvis movie, Tom Hank’s got covid and production was halted so Baz Lurhmann decided to revisit the 2.5 million feet of film from Australia, the making of which was plagued by many obstacles.

This has been recut and reimagined with 30 minutes of footage not included before being added. The ending is a bit different, but the final scene is the same.

It doesn’t take much to be a beloved action movie star. Just being large, attractive, and able to remember lines is pretty much all is required. I could make a long list of crappy actors that have been very successful with this model.

There are different types of bigotry. If you are speaking of those that show hatred and intolerance for groups of people based on their race or ethnicity etc. as opposed to those that hold a different ideology, which it would appear that you are, then that is a false analogy. Misusing the term irony is ironic.

No better place to start than his 1st book, Neverwhere. While the series is excellent, the book is better. Stardust, I think the movie was actually better. American Gods is a tossup, IMO. The book was kind of long and while the series started off strong, it didn’t finish up as well as I would of liked.

Elon voted for Biden but even he has come to realize the left has gone so far left they fell off a cliff into a world of crazy.Same with Bill. He isn’t following that herd off a cliff.

grasshopper rex 5 points 1 year ago.

Maher and Musk are, by their own admission, moderates. They are critical of the far right and the far left, but both lean left. Musk is too flakey to predict how he will vote, but seeing as he is the 2nd richest person on the planet I think it’s safe to predict that it will be in the direction he thinks will be most profitable for him. Maher said in this very episode “I don’t care if it’s Joe Biden’s head in a jar of blue liquid, I’m voting for him”. Republicans have pushed the political spectrum so far to the right that today’s moderates would have historically been considered left of center.

Lemmy (2010)
grasshopper rex 5 points 7 months ago.

I’ve been to more Motorhead shows than I can remember and was lucky enough to get to meet Lemmy twice. The 1st time was at a Dallas show in 1986. They were playing with Wendy O Williams, Cro-Mags, and Scratch Acid. A friend who worked at Z Rock scored me some tickets and backstage passes. I got there early and pretty quickly figured out that the evening wasn’t going to be what I had hoped for. Lemmy and Wendy were bickering over who got to use the only dressing room at the venue and neither was engaging much with anyone. I did get to say hi though and enjoyed the show. My best memories of that night were hearing Lemmy snap at Wendy “You don’t need a dressing room. You don’t wear any damn clothes.” and partying with the guys from Scratch Acid after the show. Two of their members would go on to form The Jesus Lizard.

The 2nd encounter was a very different experience and a memory that I treasure. Motorhead was in town for SXSW in 2010. They played two shows and Lemmy was plugging the world premiere of this documentary at the film portion of the festival. I knew they were coming and had secured a temp job working at the convention center where the press junket and screening would take place. I staked out the service hallway behind the room where an interview with a local paper had taken place and was delighted when he exited alone. Much to my own chagrin, I blurted out “Lemmy!’ much louder than I had intended and he turned quickly in my direction to assess the situation. His slightly widened eyes relaxed as he looked me over and he smiled at me.

I couldn’t believe my luck. The hallway was deserted and I had him all to myself. There was Lemmy and my first impression was how Texan he looked from top to bottom. The well worn, personally molded cowboy hat. Unadorned, black western shirt with snap buttoms. Dessert plate sized belt buckle holding up black jeans and the obligatory going out on the town cowboy boots. Expensive, custom-made, Texas-themed boots with a large single star featured prominently front and center on each one.

He stretched out his hand and we shook. I uttered some of the usual fan banalities (big fan, blah blah blah) and recounted the first time I had met him. He laughed at the Wendy memory and then spent almost half an hour retelling little stories about her. He was charming, gracious, and funny af. As he was leaving I was inspired to bum a Marlboro from the pack protuding from his shirt pocket (I don’t do the autograph thing). I still have that cigarette stored in a little glass tube somewhere in all my crap.
