RANT: I do not like this ending. I know the title itself makes it unlikely that it will be a continuing series, but WTAF??? If Andy is free, he can (and likely will) create a system to find Lee and Zoomer (if they even made it out alive. ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!! This is not a proper ending! Very unhappy right now. We at least need a movie to wrap it up, see Lee and Zoomer safe and Andy in prison! Seriously, this is unacceptable. I know, I know….I should not get to invested in a TV show.

Wow, Martin Scorsese’s first western! I didn’t realize that he hadn’t made a western before and what a great choice for his first western! I took Oklahoma history in junior high and there was no mention of mineral rights of Native Americans. Nor any mention of the black wall street murders in Tulsa Oklahoma. Both events happened in the 1920’s. Dang, the 1920’s were just as volatile as the 1960’s. Scorsese has framed this movie as a whodunnit set in 1920s Oklahoma, where the Osage Nation became extraordinarily wealthy after abundant oil deposits were discovered on its land. It’s a 3+ hour movie and sometimes you can tell the tale in just 2 hours.

AmieWarren 3 points 4 months ago.

So many people are now fighting NOT to have children learn real history, but continue to learn the white man’s version of history, like I did. I’ve been completely absorbed with books and media about the real history of the world, especially this insane country (U.S.) I live in. I’ll have to take this in small bites, because — 3 hours — but I’m going to watch it.

JadeEnigma, I find a lot of shows these days distasteful, and some are probably things you like. Each to his own. I just love history, and knowing that most of these families either lost it all or died out makes me sort of smirk at their going-ons.

The Gilded Age (2022) S2 E8

I tried watching the 1st season and I didn’t like how some characters were treated and I know that classism was very strong in this time period. Maybe someday I’ll try watching it again.

AmieWarren 2 points 4 months ago.

To me, the classism was just something to laugh at. Remember, most of those people went broke, some from overspending and some from the depression, but there aren’t nearly as many of the old guard left now. Proves money can’t buy you happiness.

JadeEnigma 2 points 4 months ago.

Oh I know it is, and that they are. I cannot help but wonder what other parts of their lives are left so unfulfilled that they do this and become Kevin Bacon?

AmieWarren 4 points 4 months ago.

It’s paranoia and a power play. They will have power over those who did not prepare because they will need what the preppers have. It’s people who feel meaningless in their lives. Some of them are quite wealthy, too. They build huge underground bunkers. It reminds me of the 1950s when everyone was building nuclear bomb shelters in their back yards.

Leave the World Behind (2023)
grasshopper rex 6 points 4 months ago.

One of the most disturbing things I’ve noticed about preppers is that most of them actually seem to hope that something bad happens and that points strongly to the likelihood that they have some variety of anti-social personality disorder.

AmieWarren 4 points 4 months ago.

Oh, they are all disturbed, but some things they say make sense. I live in hurricane country, so preparedness is nothing new to me.

AmieWarren 4 points 4 months ago.

I’ve been very interested in studying the prepper community, and they are dead serious. And you know what they collect besides the essentials? Weapons, especially guns, to protect their hoard. Prepper world is very scary.

ThinMan 4 points 4 months ago.

Predictive Programming — you can always tell a conspiracy by the creative license they take with language. Gosh, I really wish people would take this conspiracy nonsense and politics to an appropriate site(s). This is a movie/show site. It’s to chill out; not be opportunist and pollute the threads with rubbish we all have to deal with outside of here 24/7. Although “Civil War” sounds really interesting, especially with husband and wife Plemons and Dunst. Thanks for the information!

AmieWarren 4 points 4 months ago.

I always take “predictive” shows seriously, because many times, they’re right. Look at “The Handmaid’s Tale” and what is happening in U.S. politics right now.

LOL on the aluminum foil, but honestly, it’s a staple in prepper circles. It can be used to make any number of things, including silverware, utensils, dishes and makeshift grills. Also, start collecting bottles and cans.

There actually WAS life before all this technology, you know. PCs didn’t come into the public market until the ‘80s. I know, because I had one of the first ones out — and boy was it expensive! The PC and printer together cost almost $5,000 and it did barely anything.

Wait — wasn’t a world without technology the theme of Dark Angel many years ago? I would almost be happy if the internet went down. It’s so addictive and such a time suck. Just in case, I’ve been hoarding ebooks, real books, and magazines for entertainment when this inevitably happens.

Heartbreaking what we as humans have done to the world of the apex predator.

AmieWarren 1 points 4 months ago.

Man is clearly the most murderous and dangerous mammal. Did you ever see the movie “Jungle Book,” where the man was explaining that a knife was made to kill a man. Mowgli said “Is the man going to kill you?”
“No.”
“Are you going to eat the man?”
“No.”
“Then why do you want to kill him?”

Out of the whole movie, that’s the one scene that stuck with me.

Whale with Steve Backshall (2023) S1 E1
ThinMan 2 points 5 months ago*.

Thanks! Cetacea order are all whales, but it’s (the dolphin eg Orca) not considered a whale proper (like a blue whale, or a sperm whale…) they differ slightly. So Marine Biologists generally keep the distinction, since the Orca is mistakenly called the Killer Whale (a derivation of Whale Killer, which is more accurate, though perpetuates a negative space of thought for many humans about them). He should have reiterated the differences and that they are part of the order.

AmieWarren 1 points 4 months ago*.

From Brittanica:
Whale - any of the larger species of aquatic mammals belonging to the order Cetacea. The term whale can be used in reference to any cetacean, including porpoises and dolphins, but in general it is applied to those more than 3 metres (10 feet) long.

I’d say an Orca would qualify by that definition, since they are usually 20-27 feet long. Orcas kill many species, and will pretty much eat anything they can catch and swallow, unlike most dolphins and porpoises. There is one video on YT of a seal running from orcas and he jumps onto a fishing boat to save himself. They are well known for killing seals, and sometimes even slide up onto the beach to do so. I think they qualify as whales.

I think he may have explained them further, and may in another episode, but it is probably on the cutting room floor.

I almost bought a CB the other day at a yard sale. It worked, too! He only wanted $25 for it. I was thinking it would be good for hurricanes when the cell phones and wifi go out.

B.J. and the Bear (1979)
AmieWarren 2 points 5 months ago.

This show was filmed back in the days when truckers were respected and held in high esteem. For awhile, everybody had to have a CB radio so they could talk to the truckers. It was so much fun! My BF had a van, and we both had CB handles. Trucking is a hard, hard job, and I still respect truckers. Without them, we would not have all the wonderful things we have in all our stores. All Hail Truckers!!

I agree with all you’ve said. Not the greatest show to begin with, but this episode was just too much to swallow. One of the things I most liked in the premise behind both Scandal and HTGAWM was the idea of a smart, head-screwed-on-straight black professional woman who paid the cost and IS a boss. I’m black myself; it was gonna be fun to see such a character, I thought. But in each case, the shows hinted and teased (for a few outings, to get you interested) at this satisfying ideal, only to devolve into some nutty parody of a shrew who’s lost her mind. Olivia beating someone to death with a chair (!); Viola working with teacher’s pets in a murder plot (!); and this woman Gabi who is involved in the worst scenario EVER - her live-in criminal chained in the basement (!!)
I mean, do they ALL have to be touched in the head? Am I asking for too much?

AmieWarren 0 points 5 months ago*.

I didn’t see HTGAWM, but everybody in Scandal was focked up in the head. Not a sane one amongst them, but that’s just the government. Gabi is f’d up due to childhood trauma, and she’s definitely devolving right now. What is strange is she finally escaped from Sir, but then captured him and imprisoned him. It’s like she doesn’t want to be free of him. A sort of mysterious love-hate relationship. Can we say “addicted to drama?”

I don’t want to have to wait until next year to see the rest of the episodes, but I guess it’s better than having to wait a year or more like some shows have done. I think I liked TV better when there were 3 channels and shows came on once and then as reruns, so you could watch another show on another channel during the rerun episodes. So much simpler. Now there is absolutely too much choice.
