In ep 3 things get strange and take a turn.

Yeah these two actors are totally getting type cast. I don’t know that I have seen ANYTHING they’ve done where they were cast as a creep or oddball.

Giving it a go. About to start epi 2. I can say the detectives are a bit over the top. I can watch that type of dramatic psycho path dance on any American crime show I came to a British show for something different.

This show was great and should have been extended. It reminds me of Rookie Blue, Southland and Flashpoint. It’s gritty, has humor but isn’t over the top with dramatic scenarios that would never happen.

Enough of the super atrocious cartoony gelled out Johnny Bravo hair. Sheesh. Even the cartoon version of mount has more realistic hair than the actual person. Let that sh*t go. Grow it to at least jawline length, let gravity take over & lay that train-wreck down.

Tawny Newsome as Mariner however is unexpectedly super-cute. Put mount in the toon & keep her on the show. She’s rather nifty.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 9 months ago.

The wigs are becoming distracting. They’ve changed Mount’s styling several times each more obnoxious. Even with the crew Some of them do not seem even or glued on straight. One episode I could see Uhura’s bun of natural hair sticking up under her wig making her look like a conehead.

I loved it but word of warning for those who do not spek or understand french. the translation subtitles are kind of wonky and besides the track a few times. Aside from that one of the most on point cinematical interpretations of the source material

How would you compare this to the TV series from a few years ago? I enjoyed that. Does this bring anything new to the table? I am an American English speaker so I’m not even used to hearing French around me since I’m not in the deep south or New England area where people speak French or Creole.

I think he was referring to Paul Walker from The Fast and Furious. Or maybe not.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 9 months ago.

yes I was referring to Paul Walker Dying. After he died all of a sudden there was this weird campaign of Drama among the leading men that never happened before. From actors that usually stay drama free with co-stars (minus tyrese who might have literally had some mental health stuff going on). I think it was to keep people going to Fast and Furious 17 Race to Saturn or whatever else is on the horizon.

Watched the 2 episodes and Joe’s husband looked kind of familiar. He is Dave Annabel and for those of you who have watched Yellowstone, he was briefly in the 1st season. He was John Duttons oldest son who was killed early in the first season. For those of us who are older remember him from the drama Brothers and Sisters. It will be interesting to see this new drama unfold!

Still bitter about that bait and catch. They advertised using him a lot leading up to the premiere and then … well we all saw the pilot episode. I was really looking forward to seeing him tackle Cowboy. Unfortunately they have used him more in flashbacks in season 2 and 4 than they did in the pilot. His IMDB has Yellowstone next to his name even though he has been on two shows since then! :(

I feel like ever since “Once More With Feeling” from Buffy, that American shows - Sci-fi and Paranormal- all say “hold my beer” and take on a musical episode. They all tend to fall flat. And I don’t think they fall flat because we are luddites who don’t know musical theater. I think the opposite. Our musical theater standards are high and they never contribute to the storyline. They are episodes that for the most part can be skipped and feel like a ratings grab.

By the same token, I feel the same way about animated episodes and I am really proud of the franchise for saying ‘’we’ve already done animated, let’s try a new twist” with the last episode. Kudos to them for not cramming one down our throats and taking a different approach.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 9 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

There was a significant amount of drama in this series and it is —not necessarily better this season, but driving the locomotive hard and fast towards something. WHat that is and wether it’s worth it is still undecided.

That being said I was extremely upset with the pacing of the second half of the season release. episode 8 ended and it was less of a cliff hanger and more of a—the writer put the pen down and walked away mid thought. It was abrupt and didn’t feel like the arch or scene was finished. the first 5 episodes were great then the last 3 were hard and fast. feels like there should be two more episodes to round out the season. And before you get sarcastic in the comments, Yes, I know its usually 8 episodes however the release of the first 5 implied there would be ten and the delivery of the second makes it seem like there should have been. 10 and 12 episode shows are paced more like the first half of this season was.

There was a lot of unnecessary time spent on The Rats making you think they would be involved in a short episode 9 & 10 arch. You don’t give lines and closeups to people you’re never using again. Nope. With that much attention perhaps they will have a spin off like Blood Origin or be heavily involved in expanding the universe in Season 4? The show has grown on me but the ending of this season was disappointing.

The Witcher (2019) S3 E8
grasshopper rex 5 points 9 months ago.

Cavill has not been shy about expressing his concerns that the show is steering further and further from the source material and why he thinks that is a mistake. I happen to agree with him. The first season was great. Each subsequent one less so. I can’t imagine how exchanging one hot actor for another without addressing the deviation into the realm of mundanity is giong to make it more appealing. So the answer is yes. for those of us that think this would be better by sticking to the feel of the books, he did warn us of what is to come. Will I continue to watch? Probably, but a part of me will mourn for what we could have had.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 9 months ago.

considering the extensive NDAs he has to sign and the fallout of losing future roles from comments like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had him say that to drum up some drama and get people to keep watching and see what Hemsworth brings to the table. Like the Rock in the Fast Franchise. I think that stuff was BS to get people to keep coming after the lead died.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S2 E7
DownrightDebonaire 3 points 9 months ago.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this episode and it was executed well. Star Trek rarely does cross-over episodes. Spin-offs yes, absolutely but genuine cross-overs - no. They have had several episodes where one story leaked into another that was on air at the same time (watch TNG, DS9, Voy in stardate order not viewing order and you’ll see) but a genuine crossover that isn’t just a quick guest appearance was greatly appreciated by me. The details of the Lower Decks characters was great and I think it gives the folks who follow that series a chance to see their voice over actors are more than just voices while also getting to see how they would fit into the live action series.

I especially appreciate that they redid the opening title just for this episode. Very nice touch. I only wish that at the very end we could have seen Dawn (voice of Mariner’s mom) standing there with the rest of the crew waiting. As an acting veteran she deserved that tiny cameo. Oh well we can’t have it all.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S2 E8

Didn’t realize this episode had dropped. Some interesting things about this episode. Clint Howard (Ron Howard’s younger brother) returns to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Commander Buck Martinez, the Chief Medical Officer who brings Nurse Chapel to J’Gal. Clint Howard has had multiple roles in the Star Trek franchise, including playing Balok in The Original Series (he was a little child at the time) and appearing in Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and Discovery.

It was a nice throw back. I wasn’t too fond of this episode. too much to tackle in one. if it had been a 3 episode arch I would be on board. every scene felt incomplete and rushed.

They should take the daughter from this show and the daughter from Justified: City Primeval- strand them on an island and see who is still alive a week later. Call it Survival of the annoying-est. This actress has a way of making every single line sound completely irritating. Every time she opens her mouth it’s not the time but she keeps going with high pitched delivery. expresso 4 points 9 months ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

What I’m noticing is the complete lack of bodacious loquacious articulatin’ in the dialogue, in this spinoff from the original Justified. We tend to think of Boyd Crowder as the grandiloquent one but the quality was so high and consistent: everyone in that show had colorful dialogue (notably Eva). Those scripts were at their best in Justified when Boyd and Raylan were sparring verbally, and Raylan gave as well as he got - but everybody down all tiers of the cast and second and third sub-plots had dialogue that sang. Same group, same show runners: all the witty repartee seems to have been lost in the decade in between. Those kinds of comments in this series are few and far between, and they fall like a thud compared to the previous outing. Raylan still has that fire in the belly (and the eyes) but seemingly no sense of humor, probably sucked out of him by the less-than-2-dimensional daughter.

I agree with the consensus on here - she’s not an actor - but more importantly, they’ve given her nothing to work with except “sniveling brat.” I’m convinced by the character and I see why “sniveling brat” could have been a good choice here, it’s sadly very realistic for a situation like this where one parent phones it in out of guilt. I know several kids that are as screwed up, uncooperative and self-destructive as Willa. But they’ve given her a repetitive 100-word vocabulary of snivel, and her delivery lacks the urgency of really feeling even the most insipid of childish emotions (maybe because, as someone noted, she’s 20 and not 15, and the dialogue is more suited for a 7 year old). It’s as if Beavis and Butthead were dredged out of Cartoonville to write lines for a girl they hated from class. Adding to that mismatch, as a character she’s nowhere near smart enough to be his daughter. Her father is in law enforcement, and she really sees danger nowhere? She doesn’t have any of his flip language or sass? Even the most talented actress would have nothing to work with here.

When you give Timothy Olyphant good lines to sling (see Deadwood) he will deliver and then some. I feel sorry for Elmore Leonard (‘s estate). Here’s hoping she actually stays on the plane (PLEASE) and if this has enough legs to carry it to a second season, she is nothing other than a device to deliver occasional offside plot complications from Florida.

Some of the supporting characters are well-drawn, but lots of cartooning here (the Albanian, c’mon please) including the main baddie who I’m sorry is just B-L-A-H.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 9 months ago.

As for the watered down dialogue, perhaps they are trying to make a statement about Northerners? Or maybe they hired new (cheaper) writers. I think that’s what they did with Bosch. Instead of picking up where they left off they started a new show and that meant they could break a lot of acting contracts and get rid of writers.

Thank you for saying it! The entire “I’m just gonna hang out with a strange 40year old man all day” thing was crazy. My mother was a probation officer and it was drilled into me “You don’t give out your number or address, someone could be tracking me down” TO this day their phone number is unlisted and comes up blocked on people’s caller ID. “I will never send someone to pick you up or stop by the house without speaking to you first (even before cellphones)” that scene was so weird. My friends, several of whom had parents in law enforcement had it even worse — I had friends who were not allowed to have friends over inside the house unless it was me or other LEO kids because they had guns in their home. So you want me to believe this girl is as dumb as a box of rocks? OK. You want me to believe her fierce Mama Bear wouldn’t drill into her that her dad’s job has lethal consequences? BS. I feel like the person who wrote this character not only doesn’t have kids but never met one.

DownrightDebonaire 3 points 9 months ago.

I find the baby talk to be really off putting. Agreed, she talks like she’s 10 years old when in reality she’s 20! But that’s what happens when nepotism gives you a role you’re not prepared for. Talking like a baby to make up for lack of acting experience, This is her one and only role on IMDB.

It’s really bad when there’s more than one person on the main cast who is foreign and they have to talk fast. they both throw each other off. Off the top of my head the show Brothers and Sisters from 10 years ago, used to have that happen a lot. The worst was Without a Trace. Loved the show but three actors with bad accents were starring in it.

Basically any time you hear a really exaggerated localized accent it’s someone foreign

I really like this show and want to love it. I’m not a fan of the choice in lead actor. On the one hand I love that they are incorporating Vulcan culture that was established in Enterprise (shut up I’m on #TeamEnterprise it’s not as bad as people say if you read about the bad acting decisions w/ T’pol before watching) but they counter it when they ignore the two finger touching that is traditional with couples and family to show affection each time Spock encounters family or other Vulcans in SNW and DISCO. T’Pring grabs his hands often when she is in an episode and often has “emotional” outburst (for a Vulcan). I wish they were more consistent. Sigh. I miss the days of Trip learning about Vulcans to give us exposition and more canon.

I was very much looking forward to this show and gave it three episodes, hoping it would fall into it’s own formula. Unfortunately, it never really feels authentic. It feels like someone said hey let’s make a destination show and hired the crew from CSI Miami to film it. The pilot is way too over dramatic and the timing/beats are all off. It stinks of western/Hollywood influence. From the extremely stylized (unnecessary) angled shots from the ground to show the exotic backgrounds to the cheesy one liners with sunglasses.

I was hoping to watch a show where I learned about the location and culture over the course of a season. Instead it’s this trope filled disaster with a mysterious back story about the father that just isn’t attention grabbing. Macdonald & Dobbs, Wong & Winchester, The Spencer Sisters, and DeadLoche are all executed much better, have more than just a single female lead and if you’re not from those countries you learn a bit about their culture and the laws there- they also have plenty of humor and the dialogue is easier to understand because the actors aren’t stumbling their way through rapid fire English dialogue as their 2nd or 3rd language.

It seems like it was made for American audiences but they pumped it full of the formulaic stuff we’re sick of. If you like the first season of Lucifer and the 1st season of CSI Miami look no further than this sloppy mashup
