Society of the Snow (2024)
Piglet 2 points 6 months ago.

This reminds me of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was the chartered flight of a Fairchild FH-227D from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, that crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. Not sure if this is a movie about this plane crash or not and the decision they made to stay alive for 72 days.

grasshopper rex 5 points 4 months ago.

It is, as was the original adaptaion https://www.primewire.tf/movie/235295-alive The 2 films vary a bit in how they portray the series of events that unfolded. Given that this was more authentic in that they used Spanish speaking actors and the movie is in Spanish, I’m a bit disappointed that we’re getting the dubbed version. That’s probably for the best though seeing as how the only subtitles offered here are for an episode of Supernatural (wtf).

An interesting side note - Actor Carlitos Páez plays his father, Carlos Páez Rodríguez, a surviving member of the rugby team on that flight. Also of note is that the uncredited narrator at the beginning of the Alive film was Rodriguez’s own father, Carlos Páez Vilaró.

This could have had value as part of a larger conversation about objectification and how it can negatively impact people’s lives, but it failed to take the subject seriously. But who am I to judge? The mere fact that it offends so many even though it harms no one validates its right to exist imo.

One of the most annoying tropes in cinema (IMO) is the ‘dispoable’ Zippo scene where they start a fire by tossing their Zippo at some flammable liquid they’ve poured on the target. No one throws away a Zippo.

This comment is very interesting & raises so many questions, but let’s focus on a singular one of importance to fans, not just of this series, but of anything in the film & entertainment world:::

Why on Earth would a showrunner, writer or otherwise work for a project they hate so much & have no respect for the source material or fans that they feel the need to lash out at it in any way, such as the written page? Part 2 of that burning question is:::: Why would anyone hire such revisionist brats to begin with??? Don’t they have a set of questions in the interview screening process to weed out these types who have an axe to grind???

grasshopper rex 3 points 5 months ago*.

There has been alot of speculation and many accusations made on REDDIT. Nepotism and cronyism run wild in Hollywood. Without acknowledgment from the players involved, not likely, none of it can be proven beyond doubt.

This was showrunner Lauren Hissrich’s 1st directing gig. Her husband is Michael Hissrich, director of West Wing and Shameless. The writer that a great deal of the fingerpointing has been directed at, Hailey Hall, is a Wittenberg grad as is Lauren Hissrich. Whether they knew each other at school is unclear, but in an interview, Hall did say that the two had attended a summer screenwriting class together and both of them worked on Power (2014).

As to why someone would take on a project they had no love or respect for? Hollywood is filled with huge egos. In this particular case, some of the accusations walk the line between having merit and being sexist. I’m going to avoid speculating there and just say that unproven talent might think it a good way to make a name for themselves by taking a product that has a large fan base and putting their own stamp on it.

You just don’t get Wes Anderson. For one thing, he doesn’t make horrible movies. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s horrible. For another thing, if you cared to do some research, you’d find that he uses many of the same actors in his movies. Lastly, actors would give anything to be in one. Oh, one more thing. They are all A-listers.

All that being said, I can’t sit through all of Anderson’s movies, he is an acquired taste after all. But there are some I absolutely love.

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Documentary (2022)
grasshopper rex 3 points 1 year ago*.

The forefathers of heavy metal. Greatly misunderstood and much maligned, but I can’t help but feel like they brought some of it on themselves with the supernatural imagery and soundbites that could easily be taken out of context and misconstrued.

My favorite band during my teenage years, they still hold a spot in my top 3. Their messages of social chaos and injustice, glorifying drug use while acknowledging the damage it can do, and a strong condemnation of war resonated deeply with the dysfunctional, rebellious, working class teen that I was. While Ozzy was the face of the band, it was Geezer’s lyrics and Iommi’s riffing that were the soul of early Sabbath. I never understood how they got little to no respect back in the day, but it is heartening to see the mad love they get now.

Thank you for the trailer and just watched it. OMG! These are not the Godzilla Kong movies of our childhood to say the least. How far they’ve come over the decades is amazing! Slated for release on March 19th, 2024. On the 40th aniversary of This Is Spinal Tap we will finally get a much longed for sequal to the film that pretty much invented the mockumentary genre. Rob Reiner will be reprising his role as DiBergi, and McKean, Shearer, and Guest will be reforming the band, but no word yet on who will be brave enough to take up the drums. On a side note, this will be the 1st release from the relaunched Castle Rock Entertainment.

Stay Woke: The Black Lives Matter Movement (2016)
AnyCheekiBreeki -3 points 3 years ago.

You’re being disingenuous. Saying that major changes in policing need to be made,is not the same as wanting the police to retain the same or higher level of activity. You’ve used a logical fallacy, meant to deceive people who don’t know how to spot them on their own. This is a known dirty trick, used by career politicians, especially leftists like the Clintons, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden and the likes.

Anyway, here’s a direct quote from the gallup poll I was referencing:

“81% (referring to black Americans) want police to spend same amount of or more time in their area” “ most Black Americans — 61% — want the police presence to remain the same. This is similar to the 67% of all U.S. adults preferring the status quo, including 71% of White Americans.

Meanwhile, nearly equal proportions of Black Americans say they would like the police to spend more time in their area (20%) as say they’d like them to spend less time there (19%).”

Here’s the link to that poll: https://news.gallup.com/poll/316571/black-americans-police-retain-local-presence.aspx

Now, you’d probably want to use another one of the leftist dirty tricks, which is to try to refute the poll’s finding by claiming that the source is biased, but you can’t do that since you yourself used a gallup poll as reference, lmao. Don’t worry though, I’m sure know by now that you can contradict yourself as much as you like, as long as it’s not under the same comment, just like the leftist media and the blue checkmarks on Twitter do. Need examples for those too? I can give you plenty. though you probably don’t want me to, since you don’t have the luxury to cut my feed off and pretend like you’re having “technical difficulties” or block me on Twitter and pretend like you didn’t see my @ or simply claim racism, which immediately grants you protection from any accusations and hard questions thrown your way.

grasshopper rex 3 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I’m being disingenuous? You claim that BLM don’t represent the majority of Black Americans wishes yet a September survey by the Pew Research Center shows that some 87% of Black Americans say they support the movement and the share of Black adults expressing strong support for the movement is 62%. Can I get a fake news? Hallelujah!

Cops (1989)
Alien 2 points 1 year ago*.

Riiiiiight! It has to be the longest propaganda campaign in television history.

grasshopper rex 3 points 1 year ago*.

How is it that they never show cops behaving badly? Because they demand editorial control on what is actually released for public consumption.I’m not one of those that thinks all cops are bad, but when you strictly control the narrative it is indeed propaganda. This show is kind of mean spirited in nature. The vast majority of the suspects shown have a diminished intellectual capacity, ain’t too bright, and they are presented in almost a mocking sort of way. Being an idiot is a disability, but somehow we don’t seem to have any empathy or compassion for idiots that break the law. It’s a lot harder to make good life choices if one has a limited intelligence. We live in a mean spirited society where a great deal of our “entertainment” is at the expense of others. Comedy that mocks others. Slapstick that gets a laugh from portayals of people getting hurt as a result of a stupid action. There’s a whole genre of “fail” entertainment where we laugh at others mess ups. Music that revels in dissing someone because of a perceived slight. Sports where a large part of the popularity is watching the hard hits or the crashes. Even though most will deny it, we get a perverse pleasure from watching people get hurt. I don’t exclude myself, I acknowledge it and at the same time as I recognize it in myself I also see it as undesirable, at least in my opinion. I think we can do better.

Leave the World Behind (2023)
JadeEnigma 1 points 5 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Barrack Obama was asked to consult, and he did, but the only advise he offered was to make the human race less likely to devolve into absolute anarchy and chaos when faced with an apocalyptic scenario such as this. He has more faith in us as a species and suggested we would, in fact, come together more than we would otherwise. I think that’s true, myself.

Faith will leave one ill-prepared and vulnerable if that isn’t the case. Doubt is the best course and if I am wrong then I am pleasantly surprised, but still far better equipped for a worst case scenario. :)

grasshopper rex 3 points 1 year ago.

The war on drugs has always been a war on the poor and this show did much to promote and enable that war. The very act of filming someone changes their behavior and given that the police had editorial control on this show, viewers got a very stilted notion of policing that sold fear to older, white Americans in the guise of entertainment.

The Winter King (2023) S1 E10
grasshopper rex 3 points 6 months ago.

I like this version of the Arthurian legend. While it isn’t true to the original stories, neither does it conform to the unrealistic romanticized tales that came later. This Arthur feels more organic and possible. A complicated man who is often his own worst enemy, but he continues to try to do the right thing. In so many ways this makes me think of JFK.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S2 E6
Luvlinguae 1 points 10 months ago.

I was kind of hoping they would incorporate JTK’s quirky and fun pauses in speech, like we know from the TOS. But perhaps that was more Shatner’s shtick vs. being a real character trait written into the story. Maybe someone knows for sure.

grasshopper rex 3 points 10 months ago.

That was all Shatner. He’s given many different explanations over the years. That during the original series they were filming episodes at such a rapid pace that he had trouble remembering his lines and later in the movies that he continued to do so because Kirk had become known for his unusual delivery style. He’s claimed that it was something he developed early in his stage acting career as a way of keeping audiences engaged and paying attention. He’s also said that it was something he did without even being aware of it so who knows. It’s interesting to note that during interviews he doesn’t speak that way. Though he does pause occasionaly, it’s more thoughtful than for dramatic effect.

The Ice Storm (1997)
random000 3 points 5 months ago.

Pretty much near perfect film. Ang Lee is variable to all kinds of genres & gets good casting as well as attention to small detail & great photography. The pictures of the ice alone are lovely, but there are also boat tail Pontiacs with bubble glass, full-size GI Joes instead of those weird tiny ones, colorful modular furniture, fake rubber fruit, back-breaking water-beds, real tv sets & globes in bedrooms. Yet the cast offers a beautiful Sigourney Weaver, very cute young Cristina Ricci & Katie Holmes, Tobey & Elijah with Kevin Kline & Joan Allen. Never heard of a Key-Party going wrong, but the impossible happens here & it makes for a memorable climax.
