I’m probably lucky that I was only a child during the late 60’s and early 70’s as I’ve always been pretty militant minded and firmly believe that power is never willingly relinquished, but instead must be taken by force. Even then it is rarely of little use, but I understand the anger and frustration that leads to violent protest and civil unrest.

Power is a drug. It won’t be given up voluntarily, it has to be stripped away.
I didn’t blame “white people” for anything, but I’m curious why you think only black artists should be the ones to care about “these things”?
Protest songs aren’t in vogue right now, although they should be. Only country music seems to be protesting, and they’re protesting against their fellow citizens, which is fucked up.
But did you not see how many white people were in the Black Lives Matter protests? I was in one myself, here in my town, donated to the cause. That doesn’t make me any better than anybody else, just sayin, I talk the talk and walk the walk.
I just find it strange that black artists aren’t writing about these things. There are some pretty soulful and influential black musicians and celebrities out there, but all that any of them (black or white) seem to be interested in is keeping their head down so they can make money hand over fist, which most of them don’t even do any good with. So many of them are afraid of being “cancelled,” that they just don’t speak up. I say to them just like the Kent State sudents said “They can’t cancel us all.” If all artists rise up together, they have much more power than the idiots that run their careers.
That happened a week before my 18th birthday. (Yes, I’m old). I grew up during Viet Nam, and had already lost two friends killed in the war. Lost more who came home so messed up they killed themselves. We grew up with news video of them dragging bodies out of the jungle every night. We were so traumatized. That’s why they didn’t have live battle coverage of the first Iraq war, because they had promised they would never traumatize a generation like that again. Viet Nam is also why they stopped the draft. Kids who weren’t even old enough to drink (legal age even for beer was 21) were getting killed.
I remember Kent State like it was yesterday. I came in from school and it was all over the t.v. No cell phones then, no social media. I remember watching and falling on the floor screaming and crying. My mom came in and held me. She said “I meant to turn the t.v. off. I’m so sorry.” I remember the sign they hung from the dormitory windows that said “They can’t kill us all.” It was one of the worst things that ever happened in my lifetiime.
Where are the songs and movies about the Orangeburg massacre or the Jackson State killings? Oh yeah, those were black kids. One need look no further than the Wiki pages of the 3 incidents to observe the stark difference in how little these two events impacted the national consciousness compared to Kent State. In particular, the cultural references.
EDIT: I’m not attacking you. Just making an observation. :)
It’s not white people’s fault that black artists don’t write songs about these things! Viet Nam was hell on earth. I grew up during it.
honestly it’s kindof a tired old story. not particularly well written or acted, don’t know if there is enough to keep me interested.
The backstory is the first 3 episodes, which are sort of boring — until you get to episode 4, then it all makes sense. Don’t give up on it.
We liked it as kids. It’s a product of it’s time for sure. Internet is weird. Some popular things never make it online, while some obscure stuff is easily found. What’s odd is that these are dvd rips. An obscure 1982 show from our childhood, and the production company actually made dvds??? Maybe vhs tapes, but dvds??? These are pristine. That’s a wow moment.
Yeah, these are the cheap DVDs you find at flea markets and that they used to sell for $5 in big bins at Walmart. I’ve found some good old shows in those bins.
I only watched this one episode, but honestly, I think the turquoise was too trendy and they are going to get sick of it very quickly. The design was very nice, though. I sort of feel like Retta is just the “token fat black woman” in the presentation, because she basically stands there and does nothing. I don’t think I’ll watch it again.
What happened to Kim’s diet? Looks to me like she’s gained weight. I want to know what her side of the credit card story is, because I feel like there is much more to that story. Olivia makes it seem like she was charging personal items, saying she would pay Ethan back, but never paid him back. It seems Ethan is taking up for Olivia’s side of the story, so maybe she was right. I don’t think Olivia should have made it public on social media, though. It had already been mentioned on the show. She should have left it there. Still, Micah and Moriah are being sort of immature by not even talking to her about it. This whole family (aside from the little kids) needs to grow up a lot.
Heather, Ms. Bayou Girl, is a bitch. She talks a good game, but she doesn’t do jack shit. The preview makes it look like she’s going to tap out, and honestly, I think they’d be better off without her.
I don’t know why these people are so stupid they don’t know to put mud all over themselves to keep the bugs off. What kind of survivalist doesn’t know that?
First episode is very confusing, but I think I’ll keep watching and see what happens.
I vaguely remember this show. Might put it on my To Watch list just to see if it’s worth it.
Yeah. He did not undetstand that putting a 357, loaded with blanks, up to ur temple and pulling trigger, amounted to killing urself. I was about 11 when it happened. Great show.
I remember that so clearly. I couldn’t believe someone would be that ignorant.
This is eerie. I’m not comfortable with Colin Morgan playing this part. I’m on episode 3 and will keep watching, and hope everything turns out o.k.
UPDATE: After watching this whole thing, I can totally say this story is not over and deserves a Season 2. I hope it gets one.
I knew I had to give this a go on account of excellent actress Ruth Wilson, who was so memorable in “Luther” and other gems. She shines here as a very troubled shell of a woman, the victim and survivor of a horrible social atrocity (Magdelene Convents) committed against girls and women at the hands of (what else?) the Church. Wilson’s ‘Lorna Brady’ is barely hanging onto her sanity, and the viewer is never quite sure about what’s really up with her. But then, Lorna herself isn’t quite sure of things, either. Watch, and you’ll see what I mean. Her life is nightmarish, and you really feel for her plight and for the others who endured cruelty “for their sins.” Two eps. in, and I think I’ll stay for the ride.
I have it on my Want to Watch list. I’ll probably have it be my next binge on your recommendation.
I love the chemistry the cast has with each other. The repartee.
I love this show. A perfect blend of personalities, comedy and adventure.
Looks like this season is going to be really interesting. Can’t wait!
I REALLY hope this has a second season. I haven’t enjoyed a story this much in years.
This was sort of boring until episode 4, then things really picked up. I’d say don’t give up on it before then, because it’s really sort of rip-roaring action-packed from 4 on.
Theres a few technical glitches like unexplained time travel , never ending fire power from a hand full of weapons stolen from the back of a police car, tech nerd living on a farm creating a communication system synced with a brain implant, someone given total credability on a story full of holes, like why would a cop on a out of country mission not even have a car. Still Keira makes my brain melt.
This is why they call it a “fantasy.” It’s not supposed to be factual and perfect. Just accept it as it is and use your imagination.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you lived it you’ll love it, if you’re too young to have; watch, learn, enjoy! 😊
I lived it. It was the Age of Aquarius and all we wanted was peace and love.
“If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.”
Back in the day when living was cheap and life was worth celebrating. FLOWER POWER!
Wow. Action packed episode, with a surprise ending. I’m liking this better and better.
A rollicking fun show with wonderful actors and characters. It’s a must watch if you want to be entertained.
If you love shows about mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon with weird, quirky characters, you’ll love this show. I may actually watch it all again one day, because it was just so much fun.
This would not be my choice. I’ve been watching Harlen Coben’s Shelter and it is in the same vein of Nancy drew. I read the books too. I have been pleased all around with Nancy Drew. Sometimes characters can be annoying but they all mean well.
Vastly different from Nancy Drew(I like Nancy Drew, still haven’t finished it). The first season is really solid. Second season is still up in the air.
I know it’s vastly different, I meant I have a slot open so I’ll fill it with this. I’ll miss Nancy and the crew. Read all the books as a child, and the show was nothing like them. Still, really good and fun.
I’m putting this show on my “plan to watch” list. I like shows that start slow and build to the craziness.
Looking for something to replace Nancy Drew, and the reviews look good on this one. I like that people say it’s not like most cop dramas, because I watch enough of those. Always looking for something different.
Yep, Amie had a good post about that yesterday. U.S. entertainment will just have to do what it has to do. Might be dark in Hollywood, but not everywhere.
We can always hope that after this strike, someone will pick it up. It’s just such a great show.
I can say one thing for the writers’ strike — it’s turned me onto some really cool shows I probably wouldn’t have ever found otherwise. Loving this show. I love period dramas and mysteries, and this is both, with some subtle humor thrown in. The characters are so interesting. The more you get to know about them, the more you want to know.
This is sort of like Avatar meets the Matrix in Westworld. Damn! I love this show! Been binging it all day, and will probably finish it up tonight. Does Flynne remind anyone of a young Anna Paquin in True Blood?
A lot like Britannica, which I was addicted to and missed like hell after it was gone. The same sort of chaos and having to figure out who some people are because they are never really introduced, and they have different names than in the original Arthurian legends, but I like it a lot. It will be hard to wait another week to see it again.
I had this on my “watch” list, but never watched it. Now with the strike, I’m going to start. The trailer looks awesome, and I trust you guys for reviews. You’ve never failed me.
I got through season one, just barely. A little too slow and weird for me, and too much violence. I’m going to pass on Season two.
Kate Dickie is absolutely painful to watch with her wraith-like appearance. Is she ill or does she have anorexia? I’ve Googled my heart out and can find no answers.
Sadly, there will be no season 2, but it was well worth watching. A fitting ending for this amazing show.
Just found this looking for something to binge, and it’s great. So sad it was cancelled after one season, but that one season is well worth watching. Hillary Swank is amazing, as always. Too bad good shows like this get cancelled when crap “reality” shows dominate the airways. Soon, there will be nothing decent to watch.
Have you finished watching the entire series or still have episodes left?
I just finished the whole thing, and a friend is lending me all the books, but after reading the summaries on Wikipedia, I don’t think I’ll read them. Not into all the death and destruction. If there is a second series, I might watch it, might not.
I’m on episode 4 and still wondering what happened outside and why/who built the silo. I see so many things inside the silo and wonder if they have a furniture factory because a lot of it looks really new considering the silo is 140 years old. How long did it take to build the silo are the 10,000 inside actual humans from earth and we did see what is really outside and the air should be good. Alien life forms probably can’t breath pure oxygen. Did anyone notice when the lights went out the flicker of what is actually outside appeared for a few seconds. Guess I’ll have to keep watching and hope all is explained if by chance this drama gets cancelled.
I have around 500 items in my “plan to watch” and “watching” library and I swear every other day I read the comment section and keep adding more. Like this one… eventually I’ll whittle down my list but not any time soon lol… thanks for the great reviews/recommendations :)
Same. I’ll never watch all the shows I want to watch, but maybe during the writer/actor strike, I’ll be able to get to some of them.
This is such a strange show. They don’t even know that they can swim! They don’t know what cameras are! This reminds me a little of Snowpiercer, except that those people knew all about modernity. I think the reason people who go outside to clean die is that there is toxic gas in that breathing pack. The sheriff saw the sun and trees and all, but he still died. He just didn’t take off the helmet soon enough.
A lot of it was crap singing, but I absolutely LOVED Na’an’s song! In fact, a lot of others did too, and it’s already up on YT! I knew Christina Chong could sing, but OMG! Her voice is just amazing! I want her to make an album with that song and more on it. As for her story line, I was sad about how that turned out.
Christine’s performance was good, but I felt really sad for Spock.
BTW, here is the link to Christina Chong’s song https://youtu.be/cnBV1FgfRuY
Not the best episode, but not the worst.
Wow! So many spoilers! I was going to post something, but I think I’ll wait until I finish watching it.
i’m 2 eps in and wondering wither i should continue with it or not. it’s coming across as being a little stupid to me.
Yeah, I just watched the trailer and decided “nope.” I just finished binge watching all 4 seasons of London Kills, and I cannot go from that to this.
She is in a new drama called North Shore and she plays a tough politician with some baggage of course. You should give it a try.
I put off watching this for years because I didn’t like the description, but decided to give it a try. I’m on episode 4 now, and I’m hooked! Great acting. Great story lines.
Well, this was fun! I don’t watch the cartoon version, but this crossover was cute. Loved the ending.
Oh gosh. I remember that sign. same same. I was 19 yrs old.
People sometimes asked me why I was so tough. I said “I’m one of the Viet Nam generation. We’ve lost more than you’ll ever have, most importantly, our innocence. You just don’t fuck with us. Period.”
