Another great season! Looks like there will be a season 3

The Sandman (2022)

It has a very authentic Gaiman aura - a lot of echoes of American Gods in here. Can’t wait for a Season 2 :)

The Orville (2017) S3 E9

Exciting episode! loved it. But I really hate that the ships all fly in space as if they are in atmosphere. The only shows I can recall that got space flight and combat correct are The Expanse and Babylon 5.

expresso 1 points 1 year ago.

You nailed it. This bothers me to the point where it can ruin a show for me

The Gray Man (2022)

SO GOOD! Haven’t seen this good of a movie for a while from recent flicks in such a long time. It keep my interest from start to finish. 4/5 at least. Easily can watch again

expresso 2 points 1 year ago.

Agree, it’s a good rewatch, already had some people over and did that :)

The Gray Man (2022)
expresso 1 points 1 year ago*.

I’m giving 5/5 rating to Chris Evans, he finally gets a deliciously amoral character, he’s having too much fun and it’s too much fun to watch. Everything else, 4/5. Solid escapist entertainment, good stars, clever fight scenes, all around good watch. This is not an action flick pretentiously competing to be the most badass action flick on the planet, to me that’s actually kind of refreshing.

Becoming Elizabeth brought me back here, god this is so good. July TV dead zone, perfect rewatch for history nerds

Pretty good watch,so far. Well written and funny with good acting. Don’t expect to see much of Offerman though. 3 episodes in and he has seen very little screen time. According to IMDb there are 8 episodes in this season.

The Old Man (2022) S1 E6
expresso 1 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I’m enjoying this a lot more than I thought - some really nice plot twists. Now the twists on the twists are starting to come out. His character is not who he seems to be from the very beginning and whatever you’re currently thinking he is, changes in every episode. My very first impression was he was someone in his 70’s who had been dealing with his wife’s dementia or was dealing with his own memory issues. She’s recently dead, he’s talking to her, the daughter is calling and checking up on him, he has good days and bad days, he’s grieving, he looks very vulnerable, he really depends on those dogs to keep him together. Everything hits the fan, he goes to ground, it’s not memory issues, it’s tradecraft, he’s had to live a legend for 30 years. (Fight scenes: it’s nice to believe a senior citizen can actually take out multiple agents a third of his age, but the combat is a bit of a stretch.) I was excited to see him come back and surprised he was doing a show like this but it really works, he’s playing against type, everyone underestimates his jolly grandpa character and that gives him a more plausible element of surprise. Happy to see there will be a Season 2! If you like this genre, Legends with Sean Bean is a good show to watch while you’re waiting for the next season.

The Old Man (2022)
expresso 2 points 1 year ago*.

They are both doing fantastic work. If you’re middle aged or older, this is coming from a familiar place, which is a very different perspective than typical thrillers. Age is essentially a main character in the show. It makes sense that’s uninteresting / a turnoff for different audiences.

Moonhaven (2022)
expresso 5 points 1 year ago*.

Reminds me of Foundation - if dystopia-utopia is your thing this is your show, and ignore the ratings sites. There’s a handful of people who are clearly spawning sockpuppet accounts everywhere so they can downvote this show into oblivion.

Moonhaven (2022)
expresso 2 points 1 year ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

I initially dragged this hard. The first episode managed to be goofy and irritating and meh at the same time, but there’s interesting dystopian society re-building and good characters so I say, give it until #3 at least. If you are one of us who have the sci fi watching brain that wants to see glimpses of all the cool future engineering, you can’t, it’s not part of the show - in order to watch this you have to accept the cool gadgets and gear are all behind the scenes. 4/5

The Old Man (2022) S1 E5
expresso 2 points 1 year ago.

The writing in this is absolutely stunning once-in-a-decade type stuff. 5/5

The Last King (2016)
expresso 2 points 1 year ago.

Where else are you gonna watch medieval combat on cross-country skis and ponies? Historically highly accurate portrayal of one chapter in the Norwegian Civil Wars, makes for a fascinating watch. No snappy dialogue here but a couple of familiar GoT faces in the cast. 4/5

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) S1 E8
etim 3 points 1 year ago.

I was thinking about that too, while I was watching this ep, about how it had such a strong old ST feel to it, right down to the plot and to Pike over-hamming his parts, just like Kirk used to do. And yes, I too resisted fast forwarding thru it, afraid I’d miss something, waiting for it to get that silly part over with.
The coolness it had on its first run way back then is now mostly been replaced by feelings of familiarity and nostalgia.

That’s enough of that stuff, please. What’s next? A Star Trek song and dance ep?

expresso 3 points 1 year ago*.

That’s exactly what this was. This is absolutely 100% authentic to the original franchise. All the people who keep complaining they are “puking a little in my mouth” like a bunch of performative tween drama queens, while they keep hatewatching this show, moaning about canon and wokeness in the comments, have apparently purged from their minds the several painful OST and TNG episodes where Kirk or Picard went to a planet and were forced to re-perform the American revolution, got stuck in a Holodeck reality, etc. That writing was every bit as bad as this. These kind of episodes are one big long eewww for me. I sit through them, to make sure I don’t miss anything important to the season arc.

Well said. I was thinking justthe other day of how vitriolic the comments have been, from people who are yet glued to every episode. This is very good science fiction, with a message suited to our age. But you said that already :-)

That’s some amazing mousse Pike’s got. He’s tackling bad guys, having romps in the hay and getting smacked over the head and knocked out—and his crazy sifi hairdo stays up thru alla that.

This is the first throwback episode that made me say meh. Pike and Alora had less than zero chemistry. I think SNW has done extremely well so far navigating the challenge of updating Spock’s love life and personal storyline and the 70’s-styled high kitsch melodrama of Vulcan culture. This episode felt like it was missing the update - it was lifted straight from the 70’s with the vaguely medieval clothing and weapons and architecture, Alora’s long red fall wig, and the over the top kissy-kissy-is-coming musical cues. Can’t fault the plot - great twist at the end where you may not have seen is what was obviously going to come.

Kinda disappointed at this. It was very cool and great to see Obi-Wan remembering that he once was a Jedi Master. And not so cool to see Vader breaking character and the whole thing about Leia.

Alpha Omega was supposed to be “Dragonball Z”? Until they said it, I had no idea. “Goku” looked more like the crazy one from “Orange Is The New Black”. And you know a battle is bad when a judge would rather walk off than vote!

Whorror House. I love it! Leiomy Krueger. Jameela as Elvira. Iconic horror movies through the decades. I was surprised Law would use the Gag Flag, he’s always the hardest one to impress. The House of Juicy Couture was AMAZING. Well-deserved 10s across the board AND the win. Meanwhile, the Makaveli’s butchered Hellraiser. I was definitely surprised to see they survived the final battle, but they sure made an enemy of Law.

This episode could also have been called “Looking at things through your eyes”. Much of the episode was about seeing things through the others perspective. I also remember an episode from the first Star trek that had parts of Spocks dream complete with the sound effects. It was season 2. episode 5, and called “Amok Time”

expresso 3 points 1 year ago*.

Hah. I saw “Spock Amok” as a sly homage to “Duck Amuck” (where the animator is in godmode messing around with Daffy).

Angelyne (2022)
augusts1 1 points 1 year ago.

She was never a fauxlebrity. She is a pioneer of doing what the Kardashians have done just on a smaller scale. She didn’t get anywhere close to being as famous or wealthy as they did since there was no social media back then. But she did use billboards to great effect to get her name out there.

Going to check this out since I love Emmy (which is what she goes by) & Angelyne. Thanks for commenting to bring it up in the current featured comments.

expresso 2 points 1 year ago.

I agree - I think of her as a hacker working around the system. What she created is basically an early analog version of social media (that’s an extremely heavy lift if you’re not a tech or media company). She ran against Gavin Newsom in the recall election!

Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) S1 E3
Teamratt -1 points 1 year ago.

Obi Wan cuts himself off from the force then wonders why he can’t contact Qui Gon. Leia’s actions continuing to put herself in jeopardy makes me want to put my head through a wall. I’m convinced that she does the opposite of what she’s told because she wants to die. She’s just a poor plot device since the start. Why would you tell your alias to someone who knows your real name? Now if tortured Tia could say that Obi Wan is going by the name Ben. People on the run going from safe house to safe house shouldn’t sign their name on the walls unless you want to leave breadcrumbs. If you have the means to escape, don’t waste time staring at the person trying to find you. If you have your opponent in front of you don’t lose track of them by running 60 feet away then igniting your lightsaber so they know exactly where you are. Vader could have easily walk around the fire or extinguish it with a force push like he’s already done to get Obi. There’s a lot more I could say but I’d just be nit picking. I’ve had enough. I’m not going to keep watching this just because it’s Star Wars. The writing is awful.
