Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer (2021)
TX2Guns 11 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Another A++ true crime doc from Netflix. Apart from showing the utter evil and cold brutality of Ramirez’ crimes, two things stuck out: I really liked how they took the time to show how the lives of the detectives involved in catching Ramirez were effected and the contrast of how far the science of Forensics have come since 1985. It’s hard to believe that a shoe print was the main piece of evidence the Detectives had to work with!

The North Water (2021)
TX2Guns 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I am cautiously optimistic with TV series in 2021 but this one looks to be a good one. Based on the novel by the same name it has an A+ cast and an engaging script. The dark and gritty 19th century English atmosphere reminded me of Taboo somewhat so Let’s see if this dark tale of skullduggery holds water! FYI: This one is definitely not for the squeamish! Really enjoyed the rendition of “Roll the Old Chariot Along” at the end..one of the best sea shanties ever!

Val (2021)

I felt like this was Val’s Swan song to his fans..it was sad but in a way it was also a celebration of a truly gifted actor and artist.

Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed (2021)
TX2Guns 7 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Man that was a Sad story. If there is a lesson to be learned here it is HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS or somebody else will. Bob’s son got cut out of his dad’s legacy and fortune by his own half brother and a couple of plagarizing sharks, simple as that.

Tina (2021)
TX2Guns 6 points 3 years ago.

One of the better music docs I have seen in quite some time.
Tina Turner is tough as shoe leather!
A strong inspiration for the whine-bag victimhood cancel culture for sure.
A reminder to us all that Only the strong survive and the best Revenge is always Success!

Triumph (2021)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

Really inspiring and uplifting movie based on the Amazing true story of screen writer Michael D. Coffey. It stars RJ Mitte (who played Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad) in the lead role, who actually suffers from cerebral palsy. Great story about overcoming adversity and never giving up!

Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami (2021)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

Really well done series. The writers did a good job of digging into a lot of the legit businesses, some of which are still open to this day that helped wash the billions in coke money that built modern Miami.

The Salton Sea (2002)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

One of the top 10 best under the radar crime movies of the last 20 years. Val Kilmer is excellent but IMO D’Onofrio steals the show as the nose (less) meth king pin.

Bosch (2015) S7 E8
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

It’s a sad day. Harry Bosch is over! (yeah I know the spin off is coming but I doubt they will bring back ALL of the great supporting characters, in particular Crate and Barrel, two of my favorite TV Detectives since Mackey and Gardocki) And while the main story line for Season 7 was superbly crafted L.A. Noir and could stand up to any of the other past seasons. I will say when the side story with Lt. Billets began I thought it was going to be tropish shite but actually turned out to parallel the main storyline (The value choices we make in life that sometime cost us something) All in all, this was a GREAT final season to an amazing series. It goes without saying I will be hearing “Can’t let go” by Caught a Ghost (the opening credits theme song) in my head for a long, long time! Damn, I am gonna miss this show! 😭

Katla (2021) S1 E1
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

I wasn’t sure about this one going in, as Netflix has been known to do some pretty awful foreign “Eco thrillers” but after the first episode I think it’s fair to say this is not one of those, at least not as a stereo-type. It kind of reminded me of a combination of the French Les Revenants and the Crime Noir-Supernatural hybrid Jordskott. As with most Icelandic offerings, The writing is good and the characters interesting, so let’s see where this one goes.

Capernaum (2018)

Really funny and well acted A List Danish movie. Nice blend of comedy and action. Some hilarious lines in this one.

In the Fog (2012)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This is not really a “War” movie per se but a very methodical and poignant story about the hard choices people have to make in war and the price that has to be paid. It’s beautifully shot and has a style very similar to Elen Klimov who directed Come and See. For those of you that like the Russian style of film making, this is a real treat.

Blizzard of Souls (2021)
TX2Guns 8 points 3 years ago.

Hands down, one of the best foreign war dramas I have seen in quite some time. An unflinching, wonderfully crafted tale of the birth of the Latvian State as seen through the eyes of a 17 year old boy who lived through The horrors of the Eastern Front in WW1, The Russian Revolution and the Latvian Civil War for Independence. The historical accuracy, screenplay, editing and cast are all top shelf. A Real triumph for the people of Latvia! Thanks Linkers!

Edge of the World (2021)
TX2Guns 5 points 2 years ago.

Really well done in the style of The Lost City of Z with overtones of Heart of Darkness as well.

The Father (2021)
TX2Guns 5 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I found this a very powerful and moving adaptation of Florian Zeller’s play.

Unlike most films about dementia which are almost always told from the caregiver’s perspective, this one places the audience in the skin of the person suffering with the disease.

For the first hour of the movie I found myself confused and questioning everything that was happening. It felt like I was trapped in some kind of strange time loop. I was unsure of everything and everybody. It was weird and scary and not something I enjoyed feeling to be honest.

So at the end of the movie I felt nothing but genuine compassion for both Dad (Hopkins) and Anne (Colman) which is exactly the point that Zeller intended I think.

This movie definitely brings a fresh perspective to the old saying “Don’t judge somebody until you have walked a mile in their shoes.” Yeah, for sure!

Dr Death (2021) S1 E1
TX2Guns 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Seems like a solid series. Good cast and writing. Would file it under ‘Medical Horror” versus “Medical Drama” Though. A close friends mother is a para-palegic today because of this a-hole. A Life sentence was way too good for him. He needed to be put down like the dog that he was. It always makes me laugh at what Hollyweird think Texan’s accents sounds like (Hint: It’s nothing like the old couple in his office!)

News of the World (2020)
TX2Guns 7 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I have always said that the American Western remains one of the most authentic forms of American Storytelling and this movie which was adapted from the novel by the same name by Paulette Giles was a GOOD story. Nothing flashy, gritty or deep, just a simple story of a man and a child trying to make their way in a country recovering from war and terrible loss. For me this story reminded me how much a well told STORY can effect us and very often, help us along on our journey of life. 4/5

The North Water (2021) S1 E4
TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

As the story progresses it is very easy to see The author and screenwriters were heavily influenced by authors like Conrad and Melville, who liked to explore the human condition under awful circumstances. I have said before how I do not care much for Colin Farrell, but his portrayal of Henry Draxx has been bone chilling and has made this series a worthy watch for sure. This episode reminded me a lot of the movie The Grey with it’s overwhelming bleakness and amazing human endurance.

Bosch (2015) S7 E1
TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago.

Season 7 is going to be based on Connelly’s 17th Bosch Novel The Burning Room and after Episode 1 I can tell it’s not going to disappoint. So nice to have decent crime writing back on TV, even if it is going to be short lived!

While this is not my favorite Kubrick film, this is most definitely one of his finest cinematic works. It’s no surprise it won Academy Awards for costume design and cinematography. The camera work alone is worth the watch! Ryan O’Neal’s performance was amazing as well.

911 Movies like this always remind me of the old school crime radio movies from the 30’s and 40’s before T.V. was big. So much of the suspense is in the actors delivery and at times, it is excruciatingly PAINFUL to listen to and watch.

Predictable action flick but an enjoyable watch. Props to Odenkirk for the training he did for this one, not bad for a dude pushing 60.

The Road (2009)
TX2Guns 4 points 3 years ago.

A superb adaptation of one of Cormac McCarthy’s darkest novels (besides Blood Meridian which I consider one of the best Western’s ever written) No TEOTWAWKI Fantasy here. Just the grim reality of survival. Kodi Smit-McPhee knocks it out of the park in one of his best performances with Let Me In and Gallipoli ranking a close second and third. 5/5

Drizzt 0 points 3 years ago.

You do know that Cacciatore is a name of a recipe .chicken for one!!! :) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cacciatore Just thought I would let you all know :) I make it a lot and its good. But for the show, I have not watched it,, The name pulled me in !!

TX2Guns 4 points 3 years ago.

Actually the title “Il Cacciatore” is translated “The Hunter” in Italian.
What you are referring to in Italian Cuisine (Cacciatore) is translated “Hunter Style” so Chicken Cacciatore is Chicken prepared Hunter Style or in more modern culinary terms, Rustic style which could mean prepared with rabbit, onions, herbs, tomatoes and sometimes wine.

No Sudden Move (2021)
TX2Guns 4 points 2 years ago.

Really slick script by Solomon, I am going to watch this another couple of times just to appreciate all the angles and dialogue. Soderbergh’s use of the various lenses to capture that 50’s noir motif/feel is really nice. Combine all of this with a really tight cast (I thought Liotta was fantastic) and you got yourself a really well done crime flick.

Did you notice there is also a tv series? I think I started watching and stopped, may have to give it another go.

TX2Guns 3 points 3 years ago.

The series was a disaster. Another example of BAD writing trying to made up for with a GOOD Cast. Understanding that a movie or series is always an “adaptation” of a previous work (ie a book) the Writers and Directors for this series got arrogant and CHANGED vital parts of Eco’s exacting narrative in favor of creating sub-plots which served no purpose. Do yourself a favor and read the book and watch the movie, it’s time much better spent.

1944 (2015)
PonderThis 2 points 2 years ago.

I knew WWI was fought in the trenches but didn’t realize that some of WWII was also fought in trenches. I guess there was proof from WWI that they do work to a certain point. I’ve just started the movie and I’m not keen on subtitles but might give this one a go.

TX2Guns 3 points 2 years ago.

A lot of WW2 was fought in trenches and bunkers, especially on the Eastern Front mainly because there is no better way to keep an infantryman alive from artillery and tank fire than digging down into the dirt. Ask anyone who has been under fire, especially artillery fire, and they will tell you cannot get low enough into the ground. You also found an amazing amount of well built German trenches and inter connecting bunker positions and Pill Boxes at the Atlantic Wall at D-Day, same for the Japanese positions at Tarawa and Iwo Jima just to name a couple.
