Sad state of affairs our for-profit medical system has turned into…
mattalica's comments
I’ve lived in the US and in two countries with socialised medicine (still live in one of them). Don’t let anyone lie and tell you that socialised medicine is crappy or somehow worse than the medical system in the US. It isn’t. There are short-comings, of course, but it beats the hell out of being either not insured or under-insured in the US (as so many people are). Hell, even with good insurance, you still have to worry about medical bills… it is a broken system that works for very few citizens.
Fun. Dumb. Full of Action. And a touch heart-warming. Exactly what I was looking for on the night.
I agree with every word of that. Chibnall was always the problem. Bloke is an absolutely appalling writer and showrunner. The cast had nothing to work with at all. So glad that he’s leaving next year. Toby Whithouse would have been my choice after Moffat stepped down.
The Doctor is always supposed to be the smartest person in the room… regardless of the room. That’s not even remotely how this Doctor has been written and that’s really disappointing.
Apparently they don’t use seatbelts anymore in the future
Running joke in our house: There are NO SEATBELTS in the future! None of the Star Trek shows have had seatbelts so whenever they get into some trouble, the crew just gets thrown around the ship! :D :D :D
(if I am remembering correctly, the JJ Abrams Star Trek films had weird automatic seatbelts, but aside from that, there are no seatbelts in the future)
A fascinating and mind-bending classic!! Jim Carrey is incredible!! So is the hot babe he chases after!! I sometimes wonder if I’m a secret A-list star of a tv show because I’m obviously such an interesting and cool person and some really strange things have happened to me over the course of my glorious, sex-soaked life!! Like the other day I had a squirrel “walk” up to me and start to glitch out, and I coulda sworn it spoke to me!! Summing up: Great movie!! Recommeded for people who like to wonder and think about the meaning of it all!!
I think this was maybe the first time that I had seen Natasha McElhone in a film and yes, she’s both gorgeous and excellent in the role… she was great in another film that came out the same year (1998) with Robert De Niro called “Ronin.”
Oh, yeah. A whole planet wants to leave the federation and what’s gonna stop them is a clause in a treaty. How exactly is the federation going to stop them? The same way they stopped most of them leaving after the burn?
Think Brexit… was it easy for the UK to leave the EU? Not at all. Now imagine if any country in the EU could leave on a whim without any repercussions. What if a new anti-EU, populist leader is elected and says “Hey, we’re out” — if it’s that easy, then anyone could go whenever for whatever reason. As stated in the show, if we did that then you get all the benefits of membership and all the responsibility is on us. This is the way coalitions work in the real world - the EU, NATO, UN, OPEC, etc. etc. etc. Exit clauses are never “you can leave whenever you want with no conditions” but rather “if you want to leave, there is a process for that (and it won’t be easy).
Enjoyable, mindless fun — but really, who is expecting great art?!? Definitely better than the first Suicide Squad movie. James Gunn brought his style & humour to the action.. and the blood is all just part of his Troma background.
I have enjoyed Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, but wish that the writing had been better for her seasons — she has been saddled with some of the poorest writing since the return in 2005. Here’s hoping (perhaps beyond hope) that her swan-song season (plus specials) finally makes it up to her by having some good stories with good writing.
No circuit breakers or fuse boxes, either. Every time the ships take damage there’s sparks flying everywhere and the electrical system gets shot. I swear, the bridge must permanently stink like singed hair and melted plastic.Thankfully replicators aren’t just for food. They replace those computers so much. Lost technology, man. It’s like Roman concrete, y’know? lol
Yeah, in the first two episodes of this year there were flames shooting out of the walls on the bridge… and nobody seemed particularly surprised or even concerned. “Oh, the flames? That’s perfectly normal. Ignore it.”
Wow. Like an episode of Caillou. Is this the level of imagination left? High concept has turned to preteen, after school special, levels of thought. Mildly going where everyone has before.
Let’s face it — the world could use a bit of a “you know, we really should be working together” message right now. The idea that isolation can lead to distrust is also kind of relevant these days. Sure, not the best episode, but it does, at least, follow the philosophy of its creator - different races/species working together for a common good. Maybe a bit “after-school-special” feeling, but so be it.
It’s like Desperate Housewives meets Weeds for a party at Breaking Bad’s house… so that’s a win-win-win
First time watch, if you can believe it, and I finally get the hype. It is such a fun and unique movie, and it reminds me of my childhood when I had similar thoughts, though, I grew out of them. 5/5
Watched “The Social Dilemma” the other day with my kids. In that doco one of the talking heads make a reference to The Truman Show. My kids didn’t get the reference, so we’re going to watch it tonight (I originally saw it in 1998 and don’t know if I’ve seen it since then).
Got about twenty minutes into it, pretty boring, and then I tapped out. The sound level between the background music and the audio of the people speaking is waaaayyyy off. The music in blaring and you have to strain to listen to the people, which you really would not want to do as what they have to say isn’t interesting at all. The doc seems weirdly put together and does not easily present an argument for or against anything immediately. Seemed more like a weird collage of youtubers and personality types, without explaining either. Not a fan.ps I also hate labels.
I hate it when the sound mixers can’t get the voice and background/music levels right… it’s a documentary! The point is listening to what the people are saying not the superfluous music.

And after the burn, planets left the Federation because without warp-drive ships, every planet was too far away from every other planet. The Federation fell apart as planets simply could not interact with one another in person. Even if the Federation wanted to keep it together (which they did) there was no way for them to actually do so without having the ability to GO to those planets.
But there were also Federation ships in all the quadrants and territories within the Federation. So there was a lot more to it just being proximity with Dilithium based warp tech.
And kudos for the Brexit analogy. Well put.
Most ships were destroyed, the few left were stranded. Not enough ships and personnel to hold the Federation together. If everyone is, in essence, on their own out there, then a Federation that cannot provide anything isn’t really worth very much — it falls apart when it doesn’t provide anything to member planets. Which is what happened.
Exciting and very cool alternative version of Watchmen as they call it. Still I don’t see how Dr. Manhattan could die now when he died in a similar way in the movie… and yeah brought himself back to life. That is the only thing I can see as negative about this mini series. Other than that I really enjoyed it and I really can’t see why this much hate for it. It was a very cool and dark story ! And is a much watch for any comic-book fan.
The mini-series imagines that the ending of “Watchmen” was what happened in the graphic novel (“space-squid”), not the movie. This series basically assumes that the movie - and its ending - never happened.
This film is stunningly good - It is beautiful and disturbing in equal measure (i.e., a later-period Michael Haneke film). Set in a small village in Germany between the wars it links the harshly punitive nature of the outcome of WWI to the horror that was to come in WWII.
This makes the 4th big budget female assassin movie that came out just this year. Gunpowder Milkshake, Black Widow, the Protege and now this. All have A-list actors with same revenge plot and protagonist having to deal with tragic past that led them to kill. The stereotypical tropes became painfully obvious seeing how they came out so close together. Having said that, I actually enjoyed this more than those I mentioned because of the setting, stylish cinematography and being a huge fan of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson. Very entertaining with great action, but nothing new.
I was thinking that it sounded pretty much like a “yeah, been there, seen that before” kind of a film. You could also stick this year’s “Jolt” (with Kate Beckinsale) under that same basic premise.
yeah, every time they took a hit/jolt flames would shoot out in the exact same spots…guess their regular FX guy had a day off and they filled his spot with the pyro roadie from a rock band…even all the flames were identical height and intensity like a rock concert lol
A for effort D for realism lol
I said the same thing “Oh hey, they’re using flash pots left over from all those concerts that were cancelled due to Covid!”
This is kind of the plot of “Audition” isn’t it? Though I suppose it doesn’t end the same way as that one did… although — maybe?
Hiiiiie, do see above…I love it when peeps make comments on programs they’ve not even viewed….smh——any news on any of the above we both mentioned besides that mentioned? I love all my English Roses so very much!! Although—Absolutely Fabulous—-the movie—was a carbuncle on their legacy…..what do u think?
She’s been married to Ade Edmundson since the mid-80’s but they’ve only ever sporadically worked together… I would have loved for them to have done a full series of something together (other than when they both were doing the “Comic Strip Presents” films early in their careers). They seem so lovely together.
Entertaining show,….but very very very UNrealistic.
How the hell does a suburban mom get to tell a Latin kingpin “you work for me, now”?
Beth and what army? She does not own the police. She doesn’t have goons for hire. No sicario.
At no point in reality can a woman (with no criminal experience) attempt to kill the kingpin, steal contraband from the FEDS, and threaten a law-abiding civilian… without suffering ANY consequences.
excuse me… but who the phuque is this and who cares???????????????????
She’s a fictional character played by Jennifer Saunders… and anyone who cares would do so because Jennifer Saunders is funny (you may or may not know her from “Absolutely Fabulous”, or all of the work she did with Dawn French (“French & Saunders”)). Or maybe not.
ABC has decided to Cancel Stumptown Season 2 because of Covid-19 issues.
Sucks it got cancelled. I really enjoyed Season 1… at least they were able to get a complete ending for the main story arc. They hinted at some additional story arcs in the last episode, but I guess we’ll just have to imagine them ourselves.
not to judge it to harshly before even watching it but right off the bat the discerption has the the years wrong. it says its set in 1993 a year after Silence of the lambs…but silence of the lambs is set in 1990 so that would be 3 years…not 1 year as its saying. sorry to be so nit picky but as a fan of the series i can’t help it.
Given the incredibly stupid things that Thomas Harris did with the characters after SotL (both “Hannibal” and “Hannibal Rising” are execrable), it seems a very minor gripe.
Predicable stuff, the usual female cop/PI who is a renegade. She’s ex-military so she can take down guys that outweigh her by 150 pounds…………….the usual car chase with cars flying through the air. It’s all been done before
It’s a typical ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX series
if this is meant to be set after the movie, why does she look like a bairn?
Jodie Foster was 29 years old when Silence of the Lambs was released (i.e., she was born in 1962 and it was released in 1991). The actress that plays Clarice in the TV show (Rebecca Breeds) is 33 years old. That said, she does look very young — she was only 4 years old when SotL was released! :D
First episode was ok. Still seems strange to put supernatural causes in something as logically-driven as Sherlock Holmes - but others have done similar in written work (e.g., The Cthulhu Chronicles series of Sherlock Holmes). There are some definite anachronisms in the language that they use — definitely not Victorian England — but I plan to keep watching the series and see how it plays out in the long run.
I like how meta and aware of itself M.IV was. I thought the movie was great start to finish! I feel like they hit nearly every single nail right on the head. 9/10!
[spoiler stuff after you watch]
-1 instead of the extended bike-ride scene maybe they could have shown us Neo and Trinity waking up more, in different ways, so the roof scene made more sense. But I know Keanu and his love of rides.
The audience knows and see’s them waking up much more after the last cafe scene with all the soldiers, but the characters themselves not so much though they started to remember more this could have been shown more too with the time they took up psi-blasting cars. Im sure Covid presented many challenges in the way they wanted to shoot the movie. Im really glad for it though. The ending was crazy! That convo was nuts! And the classic familiar final shot with a twist.
The after credits-scene could have literally been anything else. During the movie those brainstorms were fitting and borderline hilarious and on point - but not in after-credits. Maybe a shot of Io or Niobi?
I figured that the post-credit scene was a piss-take of the Marvel post-credit scenes — i.e., people waiting to see if there is a teaser and then they get a total nonsense thing like that. I laughed because I fell for it too — sat through the credits just to make sure and then that. :D
I only ended up watching because in trailers I saw Danny Trejo and Eli Roth were also going to star, but do yourself a favor and skip this. I get it’s supposed to be an old western horror parody, but it comes off like a cheap retro porn. If they’re going to make movie intentionally this bad then they could’ve at least made it funny. Completely dry acting with terrible pacing throughout. I struggled watching entire movie and wouldn’t be surprised if anyone tapped out early in.
Yeah… Glenn Danzig seems to be the new Ed Wood - someone who thinks he’s making great films, but is truly incompetent in all aspects of story-telling, dialogue, cinematography, framing, lighting, editing, etc. Beyond that, he seems to think people don’t “get it” because he’s making some kind of transgressive art. He’s not even doing half-competent direct-to-video exploitation chic.
Wasn’t sure I was going to like the show because I don’t like Pete Davidson and find drug humour to be pretty lazy in general. Watched it because I like John Goodman and Woody Harrelson enough to give it a try (and was slightly familiar with the comic on which it was based). Even though the drug humour is, as expected, pretty low-hanging fruit comically, and there are A LOT of fart jokes, the satire inherent in the “1969 hippies wake up in 2020” balances out the lazier material. Enjoyed enough to watch season 2 if that happens.
Thanks for the review, all my fav shows in one series, do not know how I missed this but I will definitely be binge watching all the seasons!
Me too. I only discovered the show about a week ago…
and I am already in Season 3! -(:D)-
Not quite as funny (yet) as Superstore (that one built up A LOT of running jokes and that takes time) and not as satirically biting as Better Off Ted, but if you liked either/both of those shows, then you’ll probably like this one too. Enjoyable.
I miss the “featureless white void” because hearing the audience laugh a little bit every couple of lines now is weird and off-putting…
One of the best sequels in quite a while. Blade Runner (1982) was to me the best Noir detective film of the time. Not only because it had great effects but the story itself which was adapted from Philip K. Dick’s short tale - Do android dream of electric sheep held a deep connection between the viewer and the narrator. Every performance brought forth by the cast was outstanding. From Ryan Gosling to Harrison Ford and of course, Sylvia Hoek who really captured and portrayed her role to perfection as a replicant. Emotions were set high in this second half of the franchise leaving the viewer to contemplate on what is possible through science and technology. Creating slaves to work off-world for their masters isn’t too far fetched if one thinks about the implications. Jared Leto’s performance was spot on as the megalomaniac Niander Wallace along with Bautista who also played a run-a-way replicant. The whole cast worked so well, one cannot stop watching as they each break away from reality only to stop and regain their humanity when their lives are on the line. Blade Runner over the last thirty nine years has become an iconic stepping stone for many new breakthroughs in film such as, Children of Men, Sunshine, Snowpiercer, the girl with the dragon tattoo, and of course George Orwell’s dystopian vision - 1984 from the 1949 novel of the same name. Without Blade Runner, none of the other films might have made it to the silver screen in such a visceral fashion as they were meant to be. But I was so glad that Blade Runner 2049 had won two academy awards to help seal its success and to give us a preempt to what is to come later on in the franchise. Ten out of ten stars. Beautiful directing by Denis Villeneuve who has finally finished the Dune re-adaptation. And from what I have been hearing, it’s a thrill ride unlike anything that David Lynch could pull off.
Lynch gets a lot of crap for Dune, but dammit - I loved that movie when it came out… sure, sure I was 12 at the time, but whatever :) I had the “making of” book and even made my own crysknife (it wasn’t very good, but I liked it).
I would have liked to be a fly on the wall when they pitched that “Here’s my idea, Its about a cannibal troll but he doesn’t eat trolls”
And it’s a British production, so they can’t fall back on it being a bad translation of the title (my original thought was that it was somehow a poorly translated Scandinavian title or something).
Outstanding. After you watch this, you must see Jeremy Saulnier’s other film, “Green Room”, which happens to also star Anton Yelchin. https://www.primewire.li/movie/110245-watch-green-room
I liked this one better than Green Room - but both are worth a watch.
So happy they released this early because I’ve been waiting for this sequel/reboot. They finally did Suicide Squad right and lived up to it’s name making it rated R. Had great chemistry between cast and surprisingly touching moments between all the action and humor. My favorites were King Shark and obviously Harley Quinn who Margot Robbie was born to play. DC needs to keep this same momentum going for future films.
Loved King Shark — did not realise he was voiced by Sylvester Stallone!
“Bird!”
“…Nanaue, stay off the com”
