A Newfie?? I didn’t think those ever left Canada! Well this should be fun. It’s definitely on the list considering I never completed Whispering Pines. Guess I’m looking forward to not finishing another series now. ;-)

Peaky Blinders (2013) S6 E1
CleoHarper 4 points 2 years ago.

Okay, NOW I’m excited because I hate the weekly wait for the next episode no matter what I’m watching. I have held off watching this show for such a long time. First it was because I was super busy all the time when it first premiered. Then the whole show just sort of got away from me, even though it stars so many of my favorite actors. NOW it’s the final season so I can binge watch the whole Peaky Blinders universe in one single, gorgeous wodge of time. Anyone else love doing this? Anyone jealous? :-D

its ok.. the same formula as whispering pines ..milk each episode without really telling much of the actual story.. Nice to see my guy form this hour has 22 minutes in a non comedy role.. Probly might even run for 2 seasons..

You mean Harold Perrineau? He’s so freaking under-rated. I might watch this now if he’s finally the main character.

Kevin Smith, on one of his podcasts I happened to see, once said, and I am certainly paraphrasing here, that he only reviews movies he likes, and that he’s paid to see. He enjoys talking about what he likes, and doesn’t feel the need to put any more negative energy into the world by talking about films that didn’t do it for him. I liked that alot, and try my best to do the same.

This film was not on my radar before, but it certainly is now, thank you!

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago.

Love Kevin Smith, the gentle Buddha! And hello again. :-)

No Exit (2022)
CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

It seems like the only time I write reviews is when I’m pleasantly surprised by a movie that is supposed to suck. Don’t get me wrong, this movie wasn’t awesome. It was however highly entertaining. A perfect one-night-stand of a movie: super fun but very forgettable. Warning, this review is all over the place as I’ve had way too much caffeine.

You need to be willing to overlook a few really big flaws, such as a “road-closing” blizzard that’s barely more than a flurry, and just have fun with it. They got a few things right that a lot of other films get wrong, like how to properly crucify someone and (an admittedly broad sweep of) how drug addiction works. Which is unusual for dumbed-down movies such as these two-bite horror films.

This film could have been a lot worse, and the actors themselves knocked it out of the park. However it could have also been way better, nearly ruined by a couple stupid tropes and super cheesy dialogue.

I didn’t mind that you figured out who the killer was right away (you’re supposed to in this case for character development) as others did. The plot played out without totally humiliating itself, as good suspense films often do with a cringeworthy ending nowadays. Not to say it wasn’t a predictable ending; it was. However the journey was different enough to keep you entertained.

There was a bit liminal-space-creepiness that should have been explored more. With the amazing indie talent they had to work with, it would have been an outstanding move if the director would have let them improvise their dialogue.

That being said, I’m glad I watch it. I almost didn’t.

can u start cars that way

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Older cars you can. I somehow doubt it works in the post-digital age. Darby (character) stole a 90s Camaro (I think - every scene with that car is so damn dark). I had a girlfriend growing up in the nineties who lost her car keys and drove around with a screwdriver jammed into the ignition for over 2 years…until it was stolen. She couldn’t lock it!! I don’t know how she managed the screwdriver, if SHE jammed it in there or someone did it for her, or even how it works, but I did see it with my own eyes. Old cars were awesome tanks but they were also as hard to open as a tuna can, and soooo easy to steal…but not by me. I don’t drive, :-D

If you love westerns. This is right up there with Deadwood. Brutally honest showing how the real west was won.

CleoHarper 13 points 2 years ago.

I agree it’s up there with Deadwood, which is one of my all time favorite shows. However I don’t consider the west to be “won.” I think “stolen” would be a more accurate word, historically speaking. That being said, this one is breathtaking. It makes me want to start Yellowstone again.

Nightmare Alley (2021)
CleoHarper 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I know it’s a remake, but I did not expect to be blown away by this. I knew it would be good but I didn’t think it would be great. If you’re not a fan of old film noir you may not be as into this as I was. That said, never have I felt so close to being 16 years old again, “discovering” how exciting this film genre was. It felt so Bogie and Bacall (and yes, Tyrone Powers) but in such a refreshingly modern way. The snow itself was a supporting role and just gorgeously filmed. The selective color styling throughout was also really a thing of beauty. And Cooper knocked it out of the park. I feel like a fool for never seeing the vintage Hollywood glam in his looks before this role and it’s in no small part due to his efforts. A female can be transformed with makeup and wardrobe, but when it comes to vintage a male really has to work at it and Bradley made it look effortless. Although clearly more graphic than an old black and white movie, it was pulled off with the same period appropriate, gritty desperation as the classics. If I had any complaints, I would say that Ms. Mara’s character wasn’t really necessary. You could have replaced her with literally anyone and it’s a waste of her talent. I feel she was made to take too much of a back seat for literally the entire movie. However, evil as she was, Blanchett was truly a Bacall to Cooper’s Bogie. Watch this movie. If you’re not a fan of film noir you will be by the end of this movie. I feel a black & white binge coming on.

Just finished this and yep I felt more of Blair Witch meets Cloverfield style filming but definitely not Paranormal Activity. Some of the characters were entertaining and the film wasn’t as jerky as many of this style. Plus I guess the cameras were more high-tech so it didn’t make you feel sea sick. Onto the next filming fiasco..

So, we’re now at the point where the Paranormal Activity name is slapped on any “found footage” type horror film. There is very little actual paranormal activity in this film whatsoever. This feels more like a Blair Witch ripoff with a little bit of The Village thrown in.

LOVED the first and latest seasons of that show (TD)! But about Evil, the lead character is a total badass. She looks like a conservative little psychologist lady but I wouldn’t mess with her. Don’t let the Buffy comment throw you - it’s worth a watch. I won’t say it’s my favorite show but I do look for it every week.

Evil (2019)

they can’t really be compared, opposite ends of a spectrum. it doesn’t take itself so seriously which makes it fun to watch. TV shows like TO, TD s1 and s3, the terror s1 etc etc are all good solid TV shows but quite different.

CleoHarper 2 points 2 years ago.

I totally agree. If it weren’t for the dark humor of this show, and total irreverence, this show would just blend into the background. It’s because of these somewhat unique characteristics in this current social atmosphere that this show stands out. It is this very combination that makes the show entirely watchable. Like Buffy for adults. And that’s not such a bad thing.

Midnight Mass (2021)

An absolute mess of a series. Starts off good and quite disturbing and then just gets progressively more absurd and nonsensical after the first episode. Its like the writer stopped taking their meds after the writing the first episode. The characters spontaneously break out into these ridiculously long monologues all the time. Seriously, there must be like 10-15 monologues per episode. The whole thing watches like the unbearable creation of a schizophrenic on cocaine. Jesus, I feel like watching that has actually negatively effected my own mental health.

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Definitely not just you. If they would have left this as a horror movie surrounding an island community of isolated, overzealous Christians slowly turning in on themselves it would have been profound. Bev Keane was easily the most frightening character and could’ve held up a movie like that. And Hamish Linklater (Father Paul) has done dark and creepy so well in past roles that portraying him as a misguidedly “good” person this time was truly a waste. I can sit through slow. I can sit through long monologues. What pains me in series like this one the most is all the things it could have been.

The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain (2021)
CleoHarper 0 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

*There are very light spoilers. Nothing that gives away plot any more than the title.

Gravitas, Gravitas, Gravitas.

If I see the name Gravitas Ventures on a film I usually don’t bother watching it. In order to watch something of theirs, I have to be out of everything else. And I have to be suffering somehow - sick, hungover, stressed, etc. In a position where I don’t have to think too much and don’t really care what I’m watching. Where there’s some kind of background noise.
But this film broke through. Perhaps it’s because I personally related to the situation. About 10 years ago I was a victim of police brutality. I happened to be drunk, my cell phone dead, and in need of a cab. A stranger was about to hand me his cell when before I could take it we were both slammed to the ground by Redington Beach, FL police officers. As I have complex PTSD (somewhat different symptoms than soldiers) my response was not normal: I simply went silent and pretty much became an empty doll. They threw me down on my knees, cuffed me, dragged me up by the cuffs and made fun of me and my “boyfriend” while placing us in separate cars. When I was being processed I was so freaked out I couldn’t even give them my name. This made them verbally abusive at the station, even trying to get me to argue with another lady there (probably so they’d have something to actually charge me with). So there I sat in a cell until about 9am (about 9 hours) until they finally let me go - minus the money I had to pay for a cab. There was a thick ring of bruises knees from where I hit the pavement, my wrists from the handcuffs and a weird bruise on my hip I don’t remember receiving. I wasn’t falling down drunk, but I was drunk and I concede that could have been my own doing. I can see why they may see what was going on as a crime - it could have looked like the passing of drugs or money or something. What I can’t see is the justified mistreatment thereafter…and then later the petty theft of $23 ($18 for cab fare plus tip). Honestly I’ve left my house very little since because seriously, there’s no good guys left out there. Primewire’s been an amazing distraction for someone like me. I digress.
They did this to a 110 lb middle aged white woman; I can’t begin to imagine what they would do if I were black/male. I will say one thing: If there was ever doubt in my mind before (there wasn’t) I will never doubt anyone’s story of unnecessary police procedures (aka abuse) again. “Liability.” Humph. If I never hear that word again it’ll be too soon.
Why this matters concerning this movie: If anyone thinks this movie is over-dramatized or even one-sided, I promise you that you are wrong. It’s definitely not a perfect movie but it’s completely watchable…more so than most of their other ‘ventures.’ The only concrete problem I had with this movie is the misrepresented strength of the slap-lock…but then again, it is Gravitas.
Bravo, Gravitas Ventures. Finally. Keep up the better-than-mediocre work! I’d give this movie a solid B-. Now I’m off to nurse my triggers.

Lives have been lost, irreparable damages has been done to the few who managed to escape (still being done to those left behind), you can’t unring this bell or turn back the hands of that clock. At this point there’s no redemption for Aunt Lydia. I really don’t care what series of events happened in her past that made her who she became, she atleast had the option of choice back then and she could have changed her life whenever she wanted. If she was single and alone, that was her choice. If she had one too many disappointments and heartbreaks, she isn’t the first to experience those either, we all have. If her religious beliefs and sentiments cause her pain and disappointments, again that was her choice. She has no excuse.
I seriously hope Karma “wines and dines” with her with a feast meant for a thousand in Season 5.

I knew this wasn’t going to be a good movie when I started. It’s a boilerplate. What I didn’t know was that I was going to absolutely hate this movie. Dumb as shit. The only thing I liked about it was the house - 2 stars for that. I haven’t been this annoyed by stupid characters and a 2-dimensional plotline for ages. The film industry’s tech has progressed in the past few decades but Dennis Quaid is still stuck in the eighties, from his acting to his gross closeups. I need to find & review something brilliant in order to recover from my negativity here. Just…blech.

I think Lydia’s starting to come around, after that incident with the cattle prod and the chewing out from all that. And look how she’s started being kind to and watching out for cyclops girl.
She’s ate up with the cause, fer sure, but she’s starting to show there’s a human in there somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up doing something heroic and self-sacrificing before it all ends.

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago.

To me it doesn’t matter if she comes around any more than when Negan tries to “fix” things with Maggie. Some things you just can’t come back from. I appreciate when they try to show different facets of a character but some people have such an evil side (IMO) that any pain they may have suffered, any attempt at goodness to balance out the bad, I just can’t care. Maybe the next person will, and good for them - but not me. Lydia’s always watched out for “Cyclops Girl” (ahem…Janine XD)…like a pet. I’ve often wondered what her motives are there. Honestly I hope they don’t use the self-sacrificing formula for this. I feel like she needs a more original demise. Or at least, a demise without redemption. :-)

The Handmaid's Tale (2017) S4 E10

My girlfriend Alice is a softie. Even the disney animated movie “Coco” made her cry alot, lmao…
I am alot like you. I’ve experienced and seen too many crap i wish i can unsee, but we know reality doesn’t work that way. So stuffs like these doesn’t faze me anymore, although the thought of having my rights, liberty and freedom of choice being stripped, and then forced into servitude as a sex worker or a handmaid is a bit frightening.
I’m seriously hoping Serena’s baby is taken away from her. The ultimate punishment for her would be watching from the sidelines while someone else becomes the mother of her kid.
I really have no words for Aunt Lydia. She’s too old to serve as a Handmaid, putting her on the wall would be an easy escape. I can’t even think of a befitting punishment for her. Perhaps a very slow, tortuous and painful death at the colonies.

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago.

Again, very well said. Not meaning to get political or anything here, but for the past few years I was seriously afraid for the future of our rights, etc. So glad that’s (almost) over. I never thought I’d be viciously hoping someone’s child would be taken away but honestly if this were to happen in real life I doubt I’d feel any different. As far as Aunt Lydia is concerned, you have to hit her in the religion, and reputation - the two things she was obsessed with even before Gilead. Abandoned by church, govt and society would really screw her up. Also, cut out her vocal cords. Whew! In an alternate reality I seriously hope no one pisses either one of us off! XD

The Handmaid's Tale (2017) S4 E10
Laura-GCHQ 7 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This show really isn’t for the faint of heart. I managed to convince my girlfriend to give it a try and she said she’s been scarred for life and can’t unsee what she saw in the first 2 episodes of season 1. Had she binge watched the entire series up to the end of season 3, I wonder how she’d have reacted because the capitol incident took place barely a week after she attempted to watch this show. Even i freaked out.

This episode was nerve wrecking. I can only imagine the pain she’s had to deal with while those who didn’t experience what she and the other women went through just expects them to move on and act like nothing happened. Ok, now you’re out, you’re safe, we’ve heard you, sorry about what happened to you. Alright it’s time to move on.

I was super pissed when the deal to grant Fred and Serena immunity was made. I really would have stopped watching this show had he actually made the trip to Geneva.
What’s sad is i work in the intelligence community and i know and have seen this shit happen alot behind the scene. Anyway, for what it’s worth, i think fred got only a fraction of what he actually deserves, but considering the alternative, I’ll take this jungle justice, and i hope they reserve the grand prize for the gender traitor called Serena. I keep saying the biggest problem we have as women isn’t men but other women.

CleoHarper 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

So very well said! But I think I hate Aunt Lydia more than Serena. Serena’s just weak. Aunt Lydia literally hates her own gender. My grandmother was like that. I feel bad for your girlfriend, but also a little jealous: I’ve watched so much disturbing crap that things like this show hardly ever faze me. However there are things once seen you’d do anything to un-see and it sounds like she probably sleeps a lot better than I do at night. Fred seriously should have been turned into Gilead. While I enjoyed seeing him up on the wall the physical torture isn’t really fitting punishment. I wish his punishment was more psychological; being turned over to the monster he created would have been HIS worst nightmare. The humiliation, the shame, the loss of all power and esteem, feeling helpless as all his peers turn their backs in disappointment, and finally watching someone else raise his child before being put on the wall himself - that I think would have been much worse for him. It almost feels as if he got off light to me. However, I don’t think it’s his kid. I think Serena was banging the CIA rep. I really want to see that kid taken away from Serena.

I don’t want to disappoint you but aunt Lydia is in the sequel to the book, which is set like 15 years later, so I don’t think anyone’s going to be killing her off

CleoHarper 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Depends. Have they been true to the book thus far? Admittedly I never got around to reading it…though I’m kind of glad. I’d hate to be constantly comparing back and forth. Going in blind like this means I get to thoroughly enjoy the show for what it is. If they’ve been true to the book then you’re probably right. But with Walking Dead, they’ve added/deleted characters and totally veered away from the storyline and back again…so I’ve heard lol. Another one I didn’t read. Anyways there’s always hope. I think I hate Aunt Lydia the most if I’m honest. It makes my blood boil when I see a woman like that working against her own gender. She reminds me of my grandmother, somewhat. Also, I liked your views (above) on brutality and selfishness. My mother can be an extremely selfish person in the same ways as June - but her selfishness came from surviving a rather harsh childhood. Which explains my grandmother. I digress. The point is, your POV was spot on in my experience.

The Handmaid's Tale (2017) S4 E10
SheWatches 0 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

When this first started out I sympathized with the main character and felt horrible for all that she was going through even really angry but at some point her thirst for revenge turned me against her and I was hoping she get killed off or something lol. I would never be for treating a woman like that ever but there’s a reason we have laws and a reason why we don’t have vigilantes. Glad this is just a TV show and not real life. It got to a point where I really didn’t want to watch the series any more but I liked some of the other characters and wanted to see what happened to them so I kept watching. Wonder what next season is going to be about? I have a few ideas.

CleoHarper 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I agree, it’s extreme - but the point is like you said: there’s a reason we have laws and not vigilantes. Where were those laws to protect her when she was being violated in every way imaginable, and being forced into obedience while her family was torn apart? Furthermore, where were they after, in that very same system of laws you mention that she ran to for protection?

It’s a really squirmy feeling, watching her do the things she has done. Some of it is, admittedly, incredibly hard to watch. However, the point is not to judge her but to judge the systems we put our trust into when they prove less than reliable. Not to judge her decision making, but to feel the revulsion we do when we watch, seek out our empathy, and discover more about ourselves by really thinking about what we would actually do in her place. There’s no right or wrong at this point in what she does - this is that spooky gray area everyone’s afraid of.

Personally, when she and the others had him in the woods, I found myself thinking, “Go on June, make me feel sorry for him.” While there were certainly some disturbing moments that followed, I found myself thinking, “This is only physical pain. He’s not really suffering what he needs to.” In that respect I thought Fred got off easy and he really should have been turned into Gilead, the very system he helped to create. That would have been true punishment for a person like him. But apparently it was good enough for June.

I’m also glad this is fiction (presently) and I do think for awhile there, we (in the US) got very close to seeing such a dystopia. I was legitimately scared - I’m still afraid of some of my neighbors if I’m honest. Plus, I love dark shows. I loved Hannibal and although this is a far different show this has the same artistic feel to it and for me that makes it a masterpiece. NO ONE could have pulled this off like Elizabeth Moss did. Her talent is monumental.

Anyway, maybe watching this has been good for you, as you see your truth a little clearer - a kinder hand, a more compassionate soul. It’s a good thing to see. OR, maybe…maybe it made you squirm a little because there are darker thoughts you haven’t examined? Maybe a little of both? :-)

The thing for me was the not-so-subtle treatment of women as a mirror for how we treat animals. We think, “They’re being treated like animals.” My question is, why do we treat ANY creature this way? I’m not a vegetarian, not even close, but watching a show like this and knowing what happens to millions of animals daily in this country could certainly change my mind (weirdly). The death of the animal doesn’t bother me but the life it’s had destroys me. I digress!

As for your ACTUAL question lol, next season I opine that we’ll see a lot of Hannah searching, Nick and Luke conflict, PTSD, and the very real possibility of someone (pick one) wedging between Serena and that baby (I think the baby’s father is someone other than Fred’s). I see the rest of the world encroaching on the entire conflict since they brought in Geneva…and Fred later found publicly displayed. Those 22 former handmaids will have a lot of stories to tell. Personally I’d love to see more of Moira next season. I have a feeling Rita isn’t going to make it. And if anyone deserves what they’ve got coming to her, it’s Aunt Lidia. Women like her make me wish hell was real. I hope it’s Janine wielding the revenge. I bet it’ll make June’s revenge look like nothing - although that scene with Fred’s face caught between June’s teeth will never leave me. Sorry for the book but I literally just watched it lol and everyone else is asleep!

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
CleoHarper 8 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Don’t worry - no spoilers…

I don’t understand what people see in the Conjuring movies. “Based on a true story” which is based on people who didn’t live in reality. The movie “The Strangers” was also based on a true story; it happened to the director in his childhood, although it was way different: somebody was knocking on doors until they found one where no one was home and broke in to rob the place. That’s what “based on a true story” means.

If this one was a straight-up fiction horror film I still couldn’t give it any better than a 6. Where in these movies was there anything original? Anything unexpected? Were there any characters that you feel invested in? Even when it’s with actors you enjoy? The only thing of value in this collection is Vera Farmiga but she’s always lovely. That being said I can’t even remember her character’s first name. This is one of those movies where you’re keenly aware that you’re never getting those 2 hours back. I didn’t like the other ones, why did I even bother?

Dumpster ‘20 Hid This Movie From Me.
This is introspective horror so if you’re looking for action, this is not for you. But other than that you should go in blind as I did. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. I haven’t found a gem IMDB ignored in a long, long time.

I wanted to love this movie. It has Anthony Mackie AND New Orleans along with a dark, spooky plot. What’s not to love, right? Mr. Mackie is as awesome as we have come to expect. And for once the Hollywood machine produced a movie with a black man playing an intellectual. That’s not nearly as common as it should be. Also, NOLA isn’t the in-your-face tourist version of the city it is in so many movies. There is just the right amount of subtlety as a backdrop, which is good because I think using the city as an additional character here would have been too distracting. That’s the good.

Here’s the bad: this movie suffers many flaws. All relationships are abbreviated as though the director was impatient to get to the meat. Therefore, it feels rushed and watered down. Had this been a meaty-type movie it would make sense trim the fat but this film has no more depth than your average YA novel. Also, the dialog is flat, forced and uninspired.

And the ugly: the best analogy I can think of is this: Guinness in the US as opposed to Guinness in GB. And it’s also guilty of one of the latest movie tropes (spoiler alert below)…

…the dog is killed off (sort of) to elicit a cheap emotional response. That to me is the telltale sign of shortcuts taken in modern film.

I’m glad enough to have seen it to search out other Anthony Mackie movies I haven’t seen yet, but I can’t say I give this one a good review. A solid C.

Run Hide Fight (2021)

The good: Unexpectedly fun…however I don’t understand why some people found the ending surprising. I found it pretty typical. The bad: Acting was mediocre at best; only the dad seemed to know how to act but he’s not winning any awards. The ugly:The plot itself was shot full of holes. The writing was lackadaisical to the point I don’t think they had a script to work with. That all being said, I enjoyed it. Imagine the book you only read at the beach because you don’t care if you’re distracted. You’re still enjoying reading it but you don’t mind putting it down.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

As someone with mental health issues, a lot of movies concerning mental health tend to make me cringe with how inaccurate they are. This movie nailed it. Bradley Cooper nailed it. And Jennifer Lawrence really fucking nailed it. The way this film portrayed the psyche of a crazy ass nuclear family was beyond brilliant. How the film coaxes the viewer to relate to the isolative nature of mental illness never feels forced. It never feels like somewhere you don’t want to be. I don’t give such high praise lightly but this is a near-perfect movie. For those of you worried this is a chick flick - it’s not. It’s not a love story, but it’s notNOT a love story. Just watch it.

This wasn’t made by Disney. It was made by Columbia and distributed by Sony Pictures.

Oops! :-) Then I rate this even less. Thanks!

As I’m not at all a fan of Disney I was pleasantly surprised by how much this movie didn’t suck. That being said, if it had been examined by a less simplified perspective, this movie could have been truly amazing. I’d love to see someone else explore the dawning of our relationship with dogs in cinema format (rather than the structure of a documentary). Still, it was better than Disney would have ever been capable of a couple decades back.

Look, I get the metaphor. It’s the only thing that saves this movie for me. This came out in what, 2013? We had plenty of new knowledge about wolves by then. Why didn’t the director use it? The old, disproven wisdom about wolf behavior dulls the true meaning of this movie, at least for me. All I could think about while I was watching was, why are they dumbing this down? I always feel insulted when they do that in movies. This could have been so much more. If they wanted to tread the path of dumb action flick they could’ve hired Gerard Butler. Liam Neeson was too good for this movie.

Woah. What a total trip. I’m so glad I watched this.

It reminded me of Carson McCullers…but if it had gone horribly wrong.
