Rhod Gilbert's Growing Pains (2021)
deadleaf11 1 points 2 years ago.

As an American who is a huge fan of british comedy, especially panel shows, Rhod is one of the few i just do not understand the appeal of. He was also one of the worst Taskmaster contestants who was only there because he’s good friends with Greg

Eelectric 1 points 2 years ago.

I kinda look at him as a cross between Karl Pilkington and Larry David, he gets confused a lot and doesn’t understand much, but he still likes to force his way on other people, or simply get through the day in the chaos that he experiences (in his head), which can be both funny and annoying, depending on his day or what you think is funny.

I love H. Jon Benjamin, and he’s got a great voice, but it just doesn’t match up with the animation they used for “the void”. It looks off, and I honestly can’t stand the gag.

Eelectric 1 points 2 years ago.

Me neither, i’m just catching up on the last weeks .. tonight, the gag feels too forced, i paused it 1 second in to buffer, and i already saw the void eyes, and literally thought: “ah man, already?!”.
After watching Seth go crazy with all his characters like the Sea Captain etc., which i thought were awesome, this however, just doesn’t quite work for me.

Except that when Disney bought Star Wars they disbanded all the canon. They said that everything other than the movies/shows is no longer canon. So nothing you read and think you know about anything is canon anymore. Because they wanted the artistic freedom. They didn’t mess up the canon. They erased it and started fresh.

(responding to all your comments, not just this one in particular)

Hyperdriving an X-Wing into the Death Star would barely scratch it. There is a quite a size differential there. That’s why when the Jurassic Park chick hyperdrived that huge ship into the other huge ship it exploded. I doubt a fighter would have had much impact. It was the ram that hurt it. The hyperdrive just added some extra ram and also stopped it from being destroyed before it rammed or dodged. There’s nothing stopping them from ramming otherwise but they don’t want to waste lives and materials maybe I dunno it’s stupid to bitch about because it’s all make believe anyways.

Eelectric 1 points 2 years ago*.

I agree, i just wanted to add, that the Death Star got destroyed by a mere 2 (but well placed) photon torpedoes, in “theory” Luke could also have used his hyperdrive to shoot through the core, but yeah i agree with your initial explanation, a ship that size would probably get stuck behind the mantle, of sorts, a Death Star is too massive to just have things hyperdriving through it, it would have to be a massive ship to be able to destroy a Death Star by hyper-ram.
I think they showed that in the movies pretty decently, i did not think that everything can be killed just by ramming it, there are… rammifications!

And yeah, Rey was the daughter of a Palpatine clone, inherited his connection to the Force, that could excuse a lot of the missed training, because she mostly honed her fighting skills and discipline to survive alone, as opposed to Luke’s sheltered upbringing and Anakin’s failed tutelage.

But yeah, not that i really care either, i thought this trilogy was alright, slightly more enjoyable than the prequels.

Eelectric 1 points 2 years ago.

Love this movie, i so wish i saw this as a kid first, it would’ve made an even bigger impression on me, i love Miyazaki’s prehistoric era-inspired art style and creature designs, specifically the Devonian, which has been my favorite era since i was a kid.

James Cameron did say that Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky inpired his Avatar movie(s), but i think they are forgetting the Sea of Corruption here in Nausicaä, the blue hue, the floating jellyfish and the flora, as well as the strong environmental message and plot.

Either way, others call Mononoke or Spirited Away their favorite Miyazaki movie, but mine is Nausicaä, without a doubt.

With the galaxy collisions in particular, when they discussed this on shows like this before, they said we would likely not notice a thing if it would happen right now.
But only now do they realize that the opposite might much likely be true, which i had tried to discuss with other people for a long time.
Nice to see they acknowledge it now, but if even i can see that it didn’t make sense, how couldn’t the ‘inventors’, and mathematicians of the theory?

Aw come on, i know a bunch of these cases are obvious, but the ‘Thai truck flames’ was just insulting, not only is there 13 minutes of milking and repeating, but, once they get to the obvious conclusion do they show the uncropped footage, which would’ve made it even more obvious to begin with, and thus not justifying the milking. Im not going to talk shit about something I havent seen. So I try and watch everything sci fi and superhero related so I actually have ground to stand on when I am critiquing shows. Wandavision is utter shit. So is batwoman.

Eelectric 2 points 3 years ago.

Ok, but how long are you going to stick around?? Considering Batwoman is already on its 2nd season and has more than 20 eps aired, you’re just going to keep wasting your time watching something you know you don’t like?
I watched the entirety of Under the Dome and thought it was horrible, but it was a guilty pleasure of mine, i just wanted to see what they’d come up with each time, and every time it was a pleasant disappointment, same for The Strain, but you don’t seem to get any joy out of it.

It’s really stunning yeah. Bill asked her directly at the end, why she does it, if the means justify the goal, and she tried to dismiss the premise, but what really would she see in TanTrump, other than the Evangelical talking points (abortion etc.), as “true” religious people should turn the other cheek like Jesus did, and NOT be part of what’s destroying where you live.

The whole point of a democracy is that it should happen fairly, otherwise it’ll be corrupt like a dictatorship disguised as a democracy.
Fighting for the same cause, the truth, yet still opposites, makes it feel like arguing with a Flat Earther..

The panel was nice, but his New Rules closing bit was very strong, again urging the snowflakes to snap out of it, by bringing up the damage that they’ve caused over time

Bill had been sticking up for Al for a long time, i thought he could at least take the interview a bit more seriously, but whatever.

The White grievance is kinda ironic, if you look at the data of 2016, it was overwhelmingly white people voting TanTrump into Office, so yeah, they sure have something to be guilty about, unfortunately a lot will still be voting Red..
It will be a close call i think, with all the dragging out of corruption and recounts etc., that it will invoke.
Unless those mail-in ballots really take it over the edge, if they get accepted, or counted, for that matter, we’ll see.

You know, I can relate. I feel sorry for him. Maher is a classic road comedian and it throws him off not to have that pack of animals out there in the dark to play off of. He has been struggling with covid. Funny how the most loudmouth opinionated people don’t automatically have the outrageous self-esteem they project, because they need adoration from a huge crowd. Sound familiar?? ;)

It’s hard for all of late night. Their timing has been destroyed. Some hosts have gotten better at adapting over time (Colbert).

I try to remember that they can only have around 5 people in that huge room. And every single one of them has been asked to make reactions as if they were 20 audience members.

Desus & Mero are pretty much masters at this. I think this is because they are not road comedians and have been doing a podcast for a decade. And, it helps that they have a producer who jumps in and does ‘color commentary’ from time to time (much like Charlamagne the God’s show). Larry Wilmore’s show also very good at overcoming this hurdle.

Sorry, Bill. Covid sucks. I still watch.

Eelectric 2 points 3 years ago.

True, Bill does need that audience, even if they’re fake, Ben Bailey (another stay-at-home comedian with a podcast) also uses canned laughter as white noise basically.
I understand that the few audience members do pitch in a little extra to compensate, but yeah.. it doesn’t always work out so well.
I mean, it wasn’t the worst, but i also don’t specifically need to see/hear audiences to begin with, but Bill insists on being Live, so yeah, it comes with the program.

But yeah, it does sound familiar haha.
Mr. Cough-a-thon never ceases to show his insecurities to the world.

I really like how Seth Meyers dealt with it, i’d almost say the show improved without the studio audience.
I loved how his monologues and Closer Looks became more and more absurd with the addition of all the characters.
Too bad it’s slowly turning back to the old format.
I kinda turned off from Colbert since covid, although he did improve, but i just haven’t been feeling it lately.
Trevor actually got off the best, his transition was pretty good, as Seth started off the worst, but i think Seth also grew the most.
Although, i haven’t checked on Fallon, Conan, Kimmel or what’s his name, Corden, since i never really watched them to begin with. I like Conan, but i just never really watch him.

I haven’t given Wilmore’s show a go yet, i used to like his old show, Grace Parra’s “Nightly” bit used to always crack me up.
I kinda miss The Opposition with Jordan Klepper, his show was similar to the Weekly with Charlie Pickering, but for USA, and i liked the “reporters” on it.
They also kinda started with pointing out the gaslighting that people are talking about a lot now.

But yeah, didn’t intend to write this whole story haha, thanks for reading

yes im not too happy about the relationships either its why i stopped watching trek trek discovery too much relationship crap, and seven shouldn’t be hooking up with anyone

Eelectric -3 points 4 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Yeah that is how i felt about Discovery as well, i did lose interest somewhere halfway both seasons, but i still liked the show enough to come back to it.
But yeah, the emphasis on the gay relationship in season 1 is a bit iffy, it was a lot less in season 2, but i still don’t get why she’s called Michael if not for the “wokeness”, people keep “reassuring” me that it’s completely normal and they all know a girl named Michael. But whatever, i will be checking out season 3 anyway.

And i agree, i like Raffi, she’s a tough cookie and a cute actress etc., but if she’s a tough cookie, then Seven is the cookie monster, i don’t see her settling down, but on the other hand, if that means she’ll stay on the show for season 2, i’ll gladly take it.

Star Trek: Picard (2020) S1 E10
Eelectric 0 points 4 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

That was a great finale, well, sorta, i expected a lot more Borg interaction, seems like they’ve been dragged into the plot for no real reason, other than to lure Seven/Annika into the plot.
But, the Riker standoff was good, the retired pizza baker serving a hot dish.

It felt a bit weird for Picard to “accept” his new life, but knowing there will be a 2nd season, it is for the better, since it would be a bit weird to call the show Picard if he already dies in the 1st season.

Did not expect the Data closure, but that was pretty sweet, going out like a classy baller.
Also nice to see the luna moth flying and tying the sad scenes at the end.
And i have to admit, i nearly lost it when Elnor started crying.

Not sure i’m too happy about the couples on board now, Rios with Agnes, that was to be expected, but Raffi and Seven?? Did they have to hook up?
“Not that there’s anything wrong with that”(Seinfeld ref), but, i’m not really looking forward to Friends in space, there was enough relationship drama this season already, with Narek and Soji, Narek and his sister?, Agnes with Maddox etc., but alright.

All in all the first season was an enjoying mixed bag.

Then Chen asks the guy to put his hands behind his back as he walked towards the bin, and he started running!!
A guy came out of the van parked behind Chen and he jumped her, while Bradford was chasing the other guy.
But, the guy did not count on the dad being an ex cop, and boom, the dad clothesline punched him out!
And whadda ya know, it turned out to be the guy!
Then Lopez and Serg. Grey walk into the prison, to have a talk about parole.
A boy throws a ball and it rolls towards serg. Grey, he picks it up and throws it back to the kid.
As the kid catches it, and holds it in a specific manner, Grey asks the boy: “Curveball?”, the boy replies: “No, a slider.”
Grey responds: “aahhhh, a slider”, the boy says: “My dad taught me.”
And at that moment, his dad walks in, and to Grey’s horror, it turns out to be the man that killed his colleague..
But, Lopez had just informed him earlier, that his colleague, was not the perfect man that he always thought he was.
He had fallen off the wagon and was drunk the night he got shot.
This, leading Grey to gradually change his mind and perspective of the killer’s life, but especially that of his son..
The fragile art of existence is displayed in this episode, keeping track of the hand of time. And Huntington’s disease.

There’s more from where that came from!
Got any other suggestions?
