Saucer-People's comments

Raised by Wolves (2020) S2 E7
Saucer-People 10 points 2 years ago.

What an episode! The CGI is used to spectacular effect!
Obviously I had to search elsewhere to watch episode 7, but I felt strangely compelled to return and comment on PW as it’s a hard habit to break - let’s hope against hope that this link situation isn’t irreversible.

Raised by Wolves (2020) S2 E6
Saucer-People 6 points 2 years ago.

The 2nd season of Raised By Wolves is the gift that just keeps on giving. The interplay and tension between the organic/technological and religion/atheism is so well done and it makes the show one of the best sci-fi series of recent times.

Innocence (2005)
Saucer-People 4 points 2 years ago.

The story of an ‘offbeat boarding school’ description really doesn’t do the film any justice as this French language arthouse film is an altogether more surreal almost Lynchian affair. There is something very dark and disturbing about this film and despite repeated DVD viewings, its mystery remains.

Raised by Wolves (2020) S2 E5
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

Another great episode, you can feel the many strands pulling together for the grand finale.

Raised by Wolves (2020) S2 E4
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

This season, like Raised By Wolves in general, is so well paced and episode 4 totally sets up the grand drama of what’s to come. If you prefer the more traditional sci-fi tropes of technology, sentient androids and AI combined with universal and archetypal themes. (over whatever is flavour of the month in the mainstream media) then this is one to watch.

Who Killed Billie-Jo (TV Special 2022) (2022)
Saucer-People 0 points 2 years ago.

Very good UK true crime documentary that goes into great detail about the 1990s murder of 13 year old Billie-Jo and the subsequent labyrinthine trials.
It’s definitely one of those rare cases that seems to define the limits of forensic science and the justice system as a whole. It also leaves you with a lot of questions.

Big Bug (2022)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

I nearly missed the fact this new Sci-Fi Comedy film is by legendary French director Jean-Pierre Juenet of Amelie, Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children fame.
Definitely going in the sparkling new and very useful Primewire “Plan To Watch” list!

Lost: Epilogue - The New Man in Charge (2010)
Saucer-People 4 points 2 years ago.

I was a huge Lost fan but never saw this strange short epilogue until now.
It reminded me what an incredible and unique show Lost was and while I’m so glad there has been no attempt to revive it, I do miss what a joy it was, both watching it and then reading the online deciphering and interpretation of the episode.

Raised by Wolves (2020) S2 E1
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

Season One was one of best new scifi TV shows of 2020 and it’s good to see its return. If you like imaginative, well crafted science-fiction themes around spirituality, belief, technology and what it means to be human, then there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this show.
Good, well paced, opening episode that left me optimistic about the rest of Season Two.

A Boy and His Dog (1975)
Birdsforme 8 points 2 years ago.

Dark comedy with major actors during that time. Don’t let the title fool you into thinking it’s a family movie. A cult classic with adult themes.

Saucer-People 6 points 2 years ago.

“The year is 2024… a future you’ll probably live to see.”
How right the film poster tag line was, though when I first watched this, spellbound from start to finish, that future was a very long way off, not just around the corner.
If you are a fan of post-apocalyptic sci-fi and/or weird/cult films in general, this Harlan Ellison adaptation should most definitely be on your cinematic bucket list.

New York Homicide (2022)
Saucer-People 0 points 2 years ago.

Lame title as usual, but as true crime series go it’s not bad at all - interesting cases, especially the second episode.

Family Massacre (2021) S1 E6
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

If you get past the very sensationalist title of this series, it’s actually a pretty good true crime offering and this episode in particular leaves you reeling at what happened to the victims.

After Life (2019) S3 E1
Saucer-People 3 points 2 years ago.

Wonderful, Season 3 has finally arrived! If you liked The Office (UK) and Detectorists, you’ll probably already have seen this & know just how good it is, but just in case you haven’t, there’s now three seasons to binge.
Pretty much restores my faith in UK television’s ability to produce bittersweet comedies, a faith that has been severely tested of late.

To Sir, with Love (1967)
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

Sad to hear Sidney Poitier has left this mortal coil aged 94 and while I’m sure we all have our own favourite films he starred in, this one is mine.
To Sidney, With Love.

Alien: Battlefield Earth (2021)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

Not to be confused with Battlefield Earth, the truly terrible scientological scifi film from 2000 starring John Travolta.
https://www.primewire.vc/movie/410785-watch-battlefield-earth
I guess the only good thing that can be said about Alien:Battlefield Earth is that its current IMDb score of 3.1 beats the 2.5 score by Battlefield Earth (though judging by the ten minutes I sat through there is plenty of time for that score to drop!)

All Creatures Great and Small (1978) S2 E14
Saucer-People 3 points 2 years ago.

This is UK 70s Christmas nostalgia with baubles on! If you’re old enough to remember the decade, there’s a good chance you probably watched the original All Creatures Great And Small Christmas episode first time around, such was its popularity and likewise such were the scarcity of alternative British TV channels at the time.
Of course even in the 70s,the show was already a nostalgia trip, set as it was in the 1930s and yet the power of the James Herriot books (upon which the show was based) infuses it with a sweet timeless melancholy and gently reminds us what this season is all about.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Saucer-People 6 points 2 years ago.

Imagine The Matrix meets Idiocracy.

What If...? (2021) S1 E4
The Cramps: Live at Napa State Mental Hospital (2004)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

The true spirit of Rock’N’Roll!
The live rendition of Human Fly is the stuff of legend.

Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)
hellsingfan01 5 points 2 years ago.

This film is so worth watching in my opinion anyways /at least.

Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

Agreed, it’s well worth a watch and at times pretty entertaining.
One of those films you watch when you’re at a loose end but don’t want something that requires 100% active concentration.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Saucer-People 6 points 2 years ago*.

Hollywood makes a spin-off that doesn’t suck - this year just gets stranger.

Buried in the Backyard (2018) S4 E1
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

Good new season first episode about a poor and illiterate American who wins $30 million on the lottery. While many of us would jump at the chance to discover for ourselves why money doesn’t buy happiness, I doubt if any of us would want to learn the lesson in this particular way.

The Wimbledon Kidnapping (2021)
Saucer-People 0 points 2 years ago.

Good in-depth documentary on the strange 1969 UK ‘case of mistaken identity’ kidnapping of newspaper executive wife Muriel McKay with testimony from one of the convicted men as well as a critical look at the police handling of the case.

The Freak Brothers (2021)
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

I keep hoping for a genetically mutated strain of marijuana that will take me back to 1969!

Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Saucer-People 13 points 2 years ago.

In the wake of so many badly concieved redux re-imaginings that seem hellbent on turning any much loved film or TV series into moronic crap, I approached Dexter:New Blood with a certain amount of anxiety and dread.
I shouldn’t have worried, this is shaping up to be something special.

Doom Patrol (2019) S3 E10
Saucer-People 6 points 2 years ago.

Kudos to the Doom Patrol for navigating effortlessly through the always difficult third season (I’m looking at you American Gods) with panache and style.
At times I felt a real Legion vibe to the third season (high praise indeed) and the best news of all is the announcement of a fourth season.

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel (1979)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

Atmospheric, spooky Estonian Soviet era sci-fi/mystery film based on a story by the Strugatskiy Brothers and with the same vibe as Stalker (also based on a story by the brothers) and out of the dozens of Eastern Bloc/Soviet era scifi films this is one of the best. The electronic soundtrack music by Estonian artist Sven Grunberg really adds to the strange atmosphere and I well recommend checking out his late 70s/early 80s recordings if you grok electronic sound.
Unfortunately there are no subtitles for any of the links but there are English subtitles available if you do a search for ‘Hukkunud Alpinisti’ hotell on the usual subtitle sites.

4400 (2021)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The original 2004 series featured an elite team from the CDC and FBI under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security to deal with the highly anomalous ‘returned’ 4400.
The 2021 redux version of 4400 takes a slightly different approach and assembles a crack team of “social workers and correction officers” to deal with the 4400 singularity!
On the bright side, this first episode did inspire me to revisit the original series, so kudos to ‘The CW’ for the reminder:

Destination Planet Negro (2013)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago*.

This is such a great sci-fi/alternative history film and it’s surprising that it isn’t nearly as well known as other limited budget Black consciousness themed sci-fi films like Space Is The Place or Brother from Another Planet and yet it’s every bit as imaginative, wry and thought provoking.

Invasion (2021)
grasshopper rex 5 points 2 years ago.

My favorite Clarke book. I read this in junior high and my mind was blown.

Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago.

My favourite Arthur C. Clarke book too - I doubt the creators of Invasion have read it, or anything from the sci-fi canon for that matter - either that or they have total creative amnesia, or both.

Invasion (2021)
Saucer-People 31 points 2 years ago.

Three episodes in and I’m already rooting for the extraterrestrials.

Cracker (1993)
Saucer-People 0 points 2 years ago*.

A much loved nineties UK crime drama series. Robbie Coltrane is a force of nature as the central character Fitz and the supporting cast are superb, a totally believable collection of damaged cops, weird psycho-killers and long suffering family members, coupled with complex, interweaving storylines.
I rewatched it last year and it was every bit as good as I remembered it to be, thank the TV gods.

The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin (2021)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

That would be Jimmy Swaggart. His cousin is Jerry Lee Lewis the Rock n’ Roll Pioneer. Both play the Piano really well and have a penchant for ladies of the night.

Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

Lol thanks TX2Guns for correcting my mistake - guess my subconscious got Swaggart and his cousin mixed up and like you say, they do share similar tastes!

The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin (2021)
Saucer-People 5 points 2 years ago*.

Excellent documentary miniseries by Marina Zenovich on one of those strange Christian religious/cult groups, always led by a ‘charismatic’ leader that seem to be particularly prominent in America.
Despite the cautionary tales of recent history been littered with cult leaders like Jim Jones or fraudsters and predators like Jim Bakker and Jerry Swaggart who all used religion in the service of their own needs, the lessons seem seldom learned.
I have to say though, the shock ending does make you think there is a strange cosmic justice in operation.

Lipstick on Your Collar (1993)
Snapped (2004) S29 E27
After Life (2019)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

Late to the party on this one, but I’m so glad I finally got around to watching After Life, it’s one of those rare shows that effortlessly blurs comedy and tragedy in such an emotionally satisfying and cathartic manner. It was impossible to not watch the next episode and then the next and… Now like millions of others I can’t wait for season three.

The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin (2021) S1 E3
The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin (2021) S1 E3
Family Guy (1999) S20 E2
Saucer-People 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

After watching this, it feels like last week’s episode has set the low benchmark for the rest of the season - the only vague highlights were the ‘this is how women on drugs dance’ line and the brief Trashmen reference at the end - watching Family Guy now is a little like hearing a disappointing new composition from a reformed eighties band you used to love.

Y: The Last Man (2021)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

Looks like the PW pre-cogs have voted it a winner before the first episode has even been aired - it may suggest that the virtue signalling force is strong in this one.
Having said that, the many varied takes on this sci-fi end-of-the-world theme has created some wonderful cinema in the past (as other comments have referenced) and I’d add On The Beach, The Quiet Earth and Omega Man to the list.

American Dad! (2005) S17 E20
Dante89 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

American Dad is really on the decline now that Seth McFarlane only focus on his other projects. This is just a worse take on a previous episode where Steve is also to make Stan cry. Also where they had so much better jokes and better story for Roger. Lazy.

Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

Agreed, against some stiff competition, this is the strongest contender so far for worst episode of the season - though the other five votes that have given it a high score clearly differ in this regard.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Don’t think I ever watched it again after seeing it at the cinema when it came out but I’m so glad I took the opportunity once more as it is one of those ‘enjoyable sci-fi romps’ with a great ecological message and quality acting from the original team.
Interestingly, in the same year this was released, commercial whaling was finally banned and ever since the humpback whale population has increased to nearly 100’000 from its imminent threat of extinction only a few decades ago.

The Holy Mountain (1974)
Attila Steele 2 points 2 years ago.

Surprised again. Cool. I actually just finished watching it again. I never heard of Tarkovsky. Any films in particular?

Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago.

My two favourite Tarkovsky, the Russian director’s films are his 1972 ‘Solaris’ (not the Hollywood remake) and his 1979 film ‘Stalker’. Both are on PW last time I looked. I assume they are hardcoded with English subtitles though I guess if not it’s easy enough to download and grab the subs from the opensubtitles site.

The Holy Mountain (1974)
Attila Steele 2 points 2 years ago.

Wow. The fact that there are NO comments for this film is even more shocking than the film itself.

Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

It’s a wonderful film, one of the greatest ever made in my opinion, along with his El Topo. The works of Jodorowsky, Tarkovsky and Bunuel should be on any aspiring cinephiles list.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago.

Such a great film, both funny and poignant and it has one of the truly great new wave/punk songs, Wreckless Eric’s Whole Wide World as part of the plot - perfect film for the weekend.

Code Blue: Murder (2019)
Saucer-People 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Thanks to the uploader for posting this two part series, with each episode focusing on the role of the police force of Wales in solving a murder, with the investigations being filmed as they unfolded.
Though the main focus is on the murder investigation, the impact on the families of the victims is also documented and there are some heartbreaking scenes as they come to terms with their sudden loss.
Well worth a watch.

The Duke (2022)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Such a great UK film based on the true story of an early 1960s art heist that I’d never heard of to be honest. Everything about the film is a joy to watch with stellar acting, great storyline and incredible attention to detail with the vivid recreation of early sixties Britain.
It just goes to show that when the UK film industry doesn’t attempt to emulate the scripted by committee, painful, woke pandering of Hollywood film productions it is capable of making some very enjoyable offerings.

Armageddon Gospels (2019)
Saucer-People 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

‘Refugee gods, transposed to flesh and blood, wash ashore…’ Great idea for a story, someone should mention it to Neil Gaiman!
Ironically a relatively high IMDb score from a low number of voters is often the best indicator of a bad film, especially when coupled with a good film poster for some weird reason!
My guess is someone was reading White Goddess by Robert Graves back to back with American Gods, put 2 and 2 together and came up with this - folk horror for morons.

Heist (2021)
Saucer-People 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The opening story of ‘released murderer turned poet meets beautiful young woman and together they engage in sex magick to pull off a multi-million dollar heist’ is essential viewing, just one hell of a true crime story.
The ‘Money Plane’story is half told in Spanish and there are no subtitles but its easy enough to follow though obviously frustrating unless you speak the language. The Bourbon Heist story is a great tale of human nature and what people do for money and power.
