Did this one come out? Did I miss it!?

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
tabularascal 1 points 21 days ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Oh, I couldn’t disagree more! The characters were fun, and the cast was cute. But mainly, I really liked the way the script slouches against the 4th wall, smoking a cigarette and laughing at the audience the whole time. The unreliable narrator is a common trope in psychological thrillers, but I can’t recall seeing it used in a horror movie before. And the central plot device is a group of fans of a found-footage horror movie watching footage they found of themselves enacting the violent scenes of the horror movie they’re in. I think that’s very clever! Still, I can see your point. It’s not scary. No amount of meta-narrative flair can redeem a horror movie that isn’t scary. Which is exactly the problem I had with this movie too.

augusts1 2 points 21 days ago.

I felt it was trying too hard to be clever, which never works out well.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
tabularascal 2 points 21 days ago.

How did this ever come to define a genre? Music at end is creepy. Only good part.
Sad thing is, I know I’m going to waste even more time watching the sequel thinking, “It’s got to be better than the first one.”

augusts1 2 points 21 days ago.

The sequel is not at all better. Glad I saw it due to my curiosity but a complete waste of funds.

This was a compelling & emotional pilot. The acting is so excellent, it drew me in quickly & made me want to watch the rest of the series to find out what happens with these characters.

Love, Death & Robots (2019) S1 E1

Not fond of the animation initially but the storyline kept me watching, drawing me in since I wondered what was going to happen next. The epi flew by too.

augusts1 1 points 1 month ago.

Amazing finale. I’m glad they answered most of the questions that the season brought up. Incredible job by the whole cast but knowing Jodie Foster was going to star in this made me watch it. Love her. Now I need to go back & watch the rest of the seasons.

If you haven’t yet, watch Lamb - another great one with Noomi, also set in the far north. Classic folk horror, I thought it was unfairly panned.

augusts1 1 points 1 month ago.

Lamb is quietly off the wall. I loved it. DEFINITELY far from traditional horror.

All of Us Strangers (2023)
kkarlz 1 points 1 month ago. (Contains Spoilers)

was he having a psychotic episode?

augusts1 1 points 1 month ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Grief can & does create psychotic episodes if not processed fully at the time of losing loved ones from what I’ve heard from others. The main character in this didn’t get a chance as a child to say goodbye to his parents, then got busy with his life so never fully dealt w/it through therapy or whatever.

All of Us Strangers (2023)
ThinMan 0 points 1 month ago.

It is beautiful, indeed. The only way to describe it accurately without spoilers is to watch it. I’m speechless after watching it. You’ve written a nice review that succeeded in doing it justice without giving it away at all.

augusts1 1 points 1 month ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Thank you for saying so, glad you enjoyed it & the movie. I wanted to make sure I didn’t have any spoilers, so it was a bit tricky when writing it.

I thought it was a great portrayal of loss & grief and how people can hold onto it for so long if not really processed fully. Of course the memories of those we lose never goes away. People really do hallucinate & see their deceased loved ones from what I’ve heard from others. I’ve not encountered it myself though but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen regularly.

I love this series. Such a shame it ended after just 2 seasons. Strong cast with really good acting. But I refuse to see the hbo movie. One day I will give it a try.

augusts1 1 points 1 month ago.

The movie is quite good. It was a great way to send off the series imo.

All of Us Strangers (2023)
augusts1 1 points 1 month ago.

Powerful movie. The cast & performances are quite amazing. I wouldn’t recommend this for everyone though because of the emotional content & themes that might be triggering for some. It’s also a slow burn of a film that focuses on character development, so no action.

I loved Andrew Scott in the older series ‘Fleabag’ where he played the priest & love interest of the main character. Here he easily pulls off the lead w/great emotional depth & sensitivity. I am quite impressed w/his performance since he is in most of the film. In the hands of a lesser actor & director it might not have worked so well. But Andrew Haigh allows the cast to emote & is not afraid to show it onscreen. Be prepared though, this movie brought a few tears to my eyes, but it was well worth the journey to see this excellent piece of cinema.

An absolutely stunning visual masterpiece. Love everything about this movie, the acting, costumes, locations, etc., all stunning. If you’ve not ever seen this, do yourself a favor & watch it. I highly recommend this. Tarsem Singh put out some unfortunate stinkers after it but this will always remain his peak imo.

Saltburn (2023)
augusts1 2 points 1 month ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Genius. I didn’t see that ending coming at all. Keoghan is fantastic in the lead role as are all the cast. I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was so well done. It reminded me a lot of the movie The Talented Mr Ripley w/the obsession facet being a huge component that compels characters. I have a few questions though like did Keoghan’s character kill the husband too or did I miss that? Wouldn’t forensics have done tests in the autopsies of the brother & sister? And also notice that Pike’s character’s tubes had been pulled out? He surely would not have walked away scott free w/a fortune like that without some scrutiny from police and any remaining relatives. Still an amazing film though. I loved that last dance sequence to the song ‘Murder On The Dance Floor’. Very clever.

Saltburn (2023)
ThinMan 1 points 3 months ago.

Wow, what a riveting piece of cinema. Although this CAM can be a bit loud at the soundtrack, and muffled at the dialog, it truly draws the viewer in. This is not a drama. It’s a psychological thriller. Brilliant.

augusts1 3 points 1 month ago.

I don’t agree. It very much is a drama. What are psychological thrillers after all if not filled with plenty of drama? The drama is what makes psychological thrillers what they are, exciting, enthralling & intriguing which this was, very much so.

I never saw the movie so have no comparison but I am liking this series so far. I like the fact that they are focusing on character development & the relationship between the two leads. Those two aspects make it far more compelling than a typical spy show imo.

Twist N Shout! LOL. Another incredible epi. That poor woman is going THROUGH IT, losing her sister, fighting a gang of men alone, etc. Such a great actor. I need to find out who she is IRL. I’d say she’s every bit as great as Jodie Foster. Love her.

Wow, another compelling episode. So many creepy elements, it’s a cross between horror & whodunnit, a whordunnit if you will LOL 😜😆. The horror element keeps it intriguing but the whodunnit part keeps it grounded. So glad I decided to watch this current season.

Irma la Douce (1963)
Vigile 4 points 2 months ago.

Severely underrated at 7.4. This film is a lot of fun and one of the treasures that Billy Wilder gave us all.

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

It is fun. I watched most of it last night & going to finish the rest tonight. Definitely a different cheesy, over the top style of acting so I think the rating is probably just about right since I think it’s rather long at 147 mins. It could do w/some editing of scenes that I think go on far too long. I get that Wilder was allowing McClaine & Lemmon license to emote & do their thing but in this it just seems the story could have been told in a shorter time span imo.

True Detective (2014) S4 E2

All your guys comments are giving me mixed feelings. Its like staring down at a deep dark and scary hole idk whether to join in or not. I haven’t seen any eps or even a trailer of this program. Should i start from season 1 or shell i just dive in now on the 4th season.

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

I decided to dive into season one a few months back, watched one episode, loved it but got distracted by other shows I’m watching & didn’t get back to it yet. So I decided to just start w/this season & SO glad I did because it’s excellent. Like eTim said it’s different every season so you can start anywhere. Go for it!

True Detective (2014) S4 E2
augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

And the plot thickens! This is amazing & fascinating. Jodie is excellent as is the entire cast. Love the complexities of her character as we find out more about her & the case. The hour went by so fast since I was mesmerized. The writing is so excellent as is the production design!

Empire of the Sun (1987)

Got to see this on the big screen back when it came out. Went in not knowing a thing about it & was blown away. Incredible acting & stunning visually. I recall feeling overwhelmed since there is so much going on in the plot/on screen. I can’t imagine what it was like going through the real life historical occurrence. Just an amazing film all the way around that I need to see again.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (Short 2023) (2023)
augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

I would call this a de-construction of moviemaking/storytelling, revealing the components of stage & movie magic in the quirky way only Wes Andersen & cast/crew can deliver. It’s rather dry & emotionless in order to focus more on the de-construction, but that is also a WA tactic. Fascinating, yet quirky little film.

Surprised to find someone who knows them! They were so much fun live….still touring, probably.

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

They were pretty popular on the alternative scene in the early to late ‘00s. I know they recently tried to make a comeback last year but didn’t I didn’t hear anything else about it.

Fargo (2014) S3 E2
starphlo 4 points 2 months ago.

One intriguing feature of all the seasons has been the selection of music. They have used some of the best classics, some interesting tunes I’ve never heard, and newer niche stuff. The last song in this episode is by a Gypsy Punk Rock band with a Ukranian lead singer who was a refugee from Cherynobyl, Gogol Bordello. I used to be a big fan and they put on some killer concerts…. I guess it went with the Ukranian bad guys in the film.

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

Gogol is great. Seen them live.

Yes they do make some great music choices for this show. Often times quite humorous choices imo.

With your comment and experience taken on-board, we are gonna give 2 and 3 a go again. Thank you!

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

ThinMan, thank you. Glad I can help motivate you to watch them. I doubt you’ll be disappointed in seasons 2 & 3 if you give them a good enough chance. Being a big fan of The Coen Brothers’ movies definitely helped me get into the show but even w/o being a stan it’s amazing TV & among some of the very best created in the past 10 years imo. Once this season is over I’m going to give season 4 another shot.

Fargo (2014)

All good. It’s nice of you to come down fron Asgard to mingle with us mere mortals. Enjoy the series, but you might want to skip season 4. Chris Rock just doesn’t work for this.

Agreed. I couldn’t get into season 4. I just couldn’t connect w/any of the characters. I only watched the 1st 4 or 5 epis & never finished it.

WTF There is a tv show inspired by the film Fargo. I’m going to watch it.

Yes, 1st season came out in ‘014 (which I watched then), so the series has been out almost ten years. Good you finally discovered it. You’re in for a treat.

The Killer (2023)
Nashoba 3 points 2 months ago.

This was simply excellent. I also loved the inclusion of The Smiths music, it added such a funny layer for me as a fan comparing the lyrics to what was happening on screen at the time.

augusts1 1 points 2 months ago.

Love The Smiths. Was a huge fan back in the day. Funny, darkly witty w/plenty of sexual energy just underneath the surface. Had all their albums on vinyl & some on cd. Going to give this series a try since you mentioned their music is featured.

Fargo (2014) S5 E5

Best episode so far of this season. Definitely not a dull moment the whole epi. There were many funny moments that got me laughing w/some of the characters being so themselves & the absurdity of events. Great TV!

Fargo (2014) S5 E5
ThinMan 3 points 3 months ago.

I adore her acting. I had no idea she was in this season! Thanks for the heads-up. Gonna take a chance on this season now. All of the seasons seem to be one-off, continuations, thankfully. We didn’t care for the second season, so haven’t been back, but will now. She’s class.

augusts1 2 points 2 months ago.

Loved the 2nd & 3rd seasons & thought they were brilliant. I couldn’t get into the 4th season though & only got 1/2 way through. The whole gangster theme seemed too cold & distant although I know that was the point. I felt no connection to any of the characters though which was the issue for me at least. Glad they’ve returned to form for this season!

I’ve noticed he loves working with Antonio Badass. :)

augusts1 1 points 2 months ago.

I mean, who wouldn’t? But Almodovar is who gave Antonio his start in movies w/one of my favorite films of his Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown. If you want corny camp, that one is perfect.

Strange Way of Life (Short 2023) (2023)
Alien 3 points 5 months ago.

WHOA! Can you imagine anyone filming that with a straight face? So corny. And it was wonderful.

augusts1 5 points 2 months ago.

That’s what I love about the majority of Almodovar’s movies. The camp factor is what makes them unique, fascinating & over the top. Plus Spanish movies tend to have a lot of camp in them from what I’ve seen. That may be due to Almodovar’s influence over his film career in the ‘70s but also from Spanish telenovelas which are campy af.

I just found out about this movie. Wish it was longer than 30 minutes though. The subject matter deserves far more than that imo.

Poor Things (2024)
ThinMan 3 points 2 months ago*.

It is definitely a representation where colour and sound need to be at a proper level to have any valid opinion. I still don’t care for Emma Stone, but love the director, so have hope!

augusts1 4 points 2 months ago.

I watched this yesterday & I loved it but the sound was all over the place. I had to keep adjusting the volume for the dialog & still didn’t catch it all. When the music came up it was much louder than the dialog, as well. Very irritating. But I am grateful for being able to see it in my comfy abode at least!

Poor Things (2024)
augusts1 5 points 2 months ago.

Love Yorgos Lanthimos’ movies. I’ve seen quite a few of them. ‘Dogtooth’ was my first & it’s a very strange film but I loved it. So much going on in it. He’s moved in more mainstream directions since ‘The Lobster’ which was excellent but not for everyone due to it’s oddness. ‘Killing Of A Sacred Deer’ was quite good, creepy & quirky & ‘The Favorite’ was excellent & quite a bit more accessible. Looking forward to seeing what’s in store w/this latest film once a good copy shows up.
