Very entertaining … much better than the one offered above.

The Hunt (2020)

I was not expecting that - what a gas. Lampooning both sides of the political spectrum and not taking itself too seriously.

Exactly the way this movie should be taken - not stop action/thriller/comedy.

An easy 8/10 in these days where a light hearted distraction is a tonic for the troops.

Falling in Love (1984)

“Falling in Love” is truly a film to adore. As of today, this film is 26 years old, and it hasn’t aged a day. This is a classic tale of kismet and instant connections in a hectic and frayed world, filled to the waterline with obligations, responsibilities, and deeply hidden emotion. Pacino and Streep are at the top of their acting careers and their combined talent manifests itself in a film that is fluid and captivating. It is not a predictable Drama/Romance, but it is a slow burn. Streep is literally luminescent. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation and making us all feel so much younger - I’ll let you figure out the “how” from your great review.

The Morning Show (2019)

Bringing “Broadcast News” into the #metoo era, with a stellar cast and Mimi Leder (remember Deep Impact) directing some of the episodes - I am hooked from episode one.

OK … I am a sucker for media based stories (Network, Up Close and Personal and the incredible The Newsroom) and although this has more glam than grit, Jennifer Aniston works well as the co-anchor morning news presenter seeing her self being pushed out of the chair and decides it’s time to take control of the situation when her co-host is accused of … well you can imagine.

References to Weinstein and the old media guard plus dashes of humour make this a light, appetising starter but I will be hoping for a bit more meat and gristle when “Bombshell” hits the screens.

Euphoria (2019)

Three episodes in and I am so impressed with this series.

There are some very good stories with some very seedy characters and 17 year olds who are growning up very fast, living out adult problems but don’t have the tools to deal with them.

Being accepted by the group/peers (the age-old challenge) and experimenting with drugs and sex in the age of social media are major themes. It seems so easy to hook up and get high nowadays.

And seeing that I am surrounded by teenagers, it is very interesting and pretty scary at the same time.

The main female actors give credible, honest performances (especially KAT) and the life of a teenage girl is presented as a dark and lonely universe.

Highly recommended for grandparents, parents and teens alike 9/10

The Loudest Voice (2019)

This series gave me a great insight into the republican point of view and the power that television has in shaping all public opinion.

I hadn’t seen the title of episode 2, so it was shocking to view the images again from the point of view of those who were seen as targets at the time. The fear comes across as palpable along with administration’s need to find a guilty party as quickly as possible.

The danger is when the media, or part of the media becomes part of the propaganda machine and there is no questioning of the evidence nor the motives, as we see in the second episode

Top rate drama and Crowe is nailing this character. Awards beckon.

Evil (2019)

From the husband and wife team (Michelle King & Robert King) creators of The Good Wife, The Good Fight and the hilarious political satire BrainDead.

The main plot centers around a psychologist trying to cope with holding down a job, look after her four kids with hippy mom while hubby is off mountain climbing in Nepal. Being a religious sceptic, she gets offered a job by a hunky black priest and his even more sceptical technican to investigate things that go boo in the world of the Catholic Church.

Miracles, exorcisms, demons and videogames abound in these fun entertaining yet chilling cases.

My favourite is the “Leland Townsend” character played by Michael Emerson from the Person of Interest series.

Deliciously EVIL 9/10

Ad Astra (2019)

I have been waiting for a while for a good copy and I has hoping for a visually stunning event. It has its moments but boy is it drawn out. And Brad Pitt is just way out of his depth on this one. This role called for some nuanced externalisation of very deep emotions and Mr. Pitt’s range just does not extend that far. He was much better sticking to what he knows best with Tarantino “Once upon a time in Hollywood”. The whole project felt stoggy and the acting wooden. The climactic face off between the two at the end registered 10 on the meaningless scale. Maybe it was me, but I would not give this a second try and only recommended for SCIFI buffs and Pitt fanatics 4/10

Downton Abbey (2019)
maripop 2 points 4 years ago.

We are back among the elegant halls of the Abbey and flying over the beautifully manicured lawns of the estate to catch up with the Crawleys - this time the action and intrigue comes from the downstairs quarters leaving the upstairs to prance around waiting for their King and Queen. Terrorist plots, servant wars and the odd quip from Maggie Smith drags a tv episode out into a feature length with plenty of excuses for a follow up as the new generation takes the reins. 6/10
