A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Dark comedy with major actors during that time. Don’t let the title fool you into thinking it’s a family movie. A cult classic with adult themes.

puppy528 6 points 2 years ago.

Very much agreed; I watched this as a kid, and loved it (hey; a telepathic, talking dog!). I watched it again as an adult, and wondered who in their right mind would allow a kid to watch this? Still a good sci-fi movie, tho.

Star Trek: Enterprise (2001)

It may have gotten more seasons if not for that god awful theme song!

I remember there being a more traditional “alternative” version on youtube back then. No clue if it was a fan-made version or just not used. I’m sure a quick search would be able to find it again. I agree that the one we got was a poor choice, regardless.

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

It had it’s flaws, but it was always going to. I still enjoyed it much better than I expected to, going in. Very glad I watched it.

“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,”

That went over so well last time that they shot the guy who said it.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
puppy528 1 points 2 years ago.

Unpopular opinion time, but when I was a kid (in the long-long ago), I actively disliked the original trilogy. It was long, kind of slow, and (to me) had nothing on other space movies like The Last Starfighter. It didn’t help that New Hope was the only movie the teachers played during rainy-day recesses, and so you only saw whatever snippet your lunch happened to be, over and over again. You can likely already surmise how I felt about the first two prequels, once they came out.

Then I sat through this one, because a friend had bought me a ticket and told me “Just don’t complain during it”. I… loved it. I really did. I liked it so much that I literally went back and watched all six films again, start to finish, to watch them through the point-of-view of Anakin/Vader. It changed the entire narrative for me. I wouldn’t call myself a “fan” of the old ones, but this one definitely made them “watchable” for me.

Norm Macdonald: Hitler's Dog, Gossip & Trickery (TV Special 2017) (2017)
mantistoboggan3 -2 points 3 years ago.

i don’t get it, i will never get it, i’ve tried and tried and tried. i just don’t get Macdonald’s humor , i just don’t understand his humor, why people think he’s funny, and its not because i haven’t watched his movies or shows or specials, i’ve tried, just not funny to me

puppy528 4 points 3 years ago.

I have the exact same situation with Will Farrell. I get that people like him, I’ve sincerely tried to like his more popular movies, but I just don’t “get it”. Diff’rent Strokes, I suppose.
I do like Norm Macdonald, most of the time. Gets a bit too meta for me here and there, but he has a very sharp, trolling sort of wit, and I personally can’t think of a comedian better than him at telling an “anti-joke”.

Altered Carbon (2018) S2 E3

3 eps in and this is a whole lot more tame then season 1. lot less gore and a ton less skin. Seems way toned down to go on network tv.

puppy528 1 points 3 years ago.

It’s not just the gore and skin; everything in this season seemed so tame & tired by comparison, and all-around less boundary-pushing. Season 1 set the bar so enjoyably high, too…

Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
MonkyNutz 1 points 3 years ago*.

This show started with such great promise but progressively kept getting worse, gave up watching around mid season 3 as the story-line and acting went so far downhill. But based off a lot of recent comments, I think i’ll give this latest season “S06” a go :)

puppy528 2 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Even speaking as a fan of these “Walking” shows, one of the inherent flaws in them is having such character-driven story-lines in a show whose key traits include an ever-changing, “killable” cast. For example, I got into Fear even as TWD started to lull specifically because Nick was such an awesome, watchable character (to me). Now he’s years gone. So is nearly all of the original cast, save one or two. It’s hard to like a show based on how likeable its characters are, when the ones you really get attached to are permanently gone, but the show continues so long that the current characters don’t even know who that person ever was.

My point is, it’s inevitable that their replacements are going to have different amounts of charisma (or lack thereof), different acting abilities (or lack thereof), and less-enjoyable story-lines (or lack thereof). I like Morgan, I like a few parts of what’s going on, now, but man; do I miss Nick and Mexico.

The Crystal Maze (2016) S1 E1
puppy528 2 points 3 years ago.

I thought this was going to be with Richard Ayoade as host, but it’s not. It’s a different version of the show with some guy named Adam Connover (sp?).
Additionally, it’s starring “The Blair Family” as the challengers instead of “The Watson Family”, as listed in the description. It’s just altogether not the correct show.

Chopped Sweets (2019)
puppy528 1 points 3 years ago.

Not as engrossing as regular “Chopped”, since every challenge of every episode is just “make a dessert using this non-dessert, ‘curveball’ ingredient”, but it’s still enjoyable enough simply to watch skilled people compete in their field of expertise.

The 100 (2014)
puppy528 5 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

I’ve somehow watched all 7 seasons of this show that have aired so far, and it truly runs the gamut from cringy to, well, genuinely good sci-fi.

It starts out as “Dawson’s Creek: The Apocalypse Years”, spends a couple of episodes doing its take on The Walking Dead’s Woodbury storyline, then dives just wholeheartedly into GoT territory for a while. But once the //SPOILERS AHEAD// underground Roman-gladiator cannibal survivalist people resurface and engage in a war with the thawed-out mining prisoner murderer space people and //SUPER SPOILERS AHEAD// blow up the earth again, make friends with each other, then head to another planet, it really starts to come into its own..

If you’ve read all that, you should put up with the cringy bits and watch it.

Altered Carbon (2018)
puppy528 5 points 3 years ago.

Season 1 was an amazing, creative sci-fi and very well-executed. I was hooked from start to finish, and its season finiale really did leave me wondering “Where are they going to go from here?!”.
Season 2 gave the answer; absolutely nowhere. Replaced actors, predictable plots and tedious, tired tropes kill any interest that might have carried over from season 1. A real shame.
