The Northman (2022)
tapwater 2 points 1 year ago*.

Zany film. At some points it seemed to be making fun of itself, at others taking itself too seriously, and some parts were downright nonsensical. It made me laugh though so it gets an extra star.

Marvelous and the Black Hole (2021)

OWAH! I just realized who John Lurie is! He is one of my favorite musicians I didn’t even connect the two, He is my ringtone right now on my phone! WHAT A TRIP!

tapwater 2 points 2 years ago.

He also did a great show called ‘Fishing with John’ in the early 90’s with fantastic guests like Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper, and Willem Dafoe. Check it out https://www.primewire.li/tv/89276-watch-fishing-with-john In the meantime I will check this out. Thanks for your comment.

Death on the Nile (2022)
booger 8 points 2 years ago.

Cam quality is excellent as is most spotlights cam copies with limited interruptions and intrusions.
Unlike the 1978 film version of Agatha Cristie’s work this film takes a bit of time to delve deeper into the main character (Poirot) past and develops him into a more 3 dimensional persona, it even takes time to flesh out the other characters in succinct yet meaningful ways which enhances the enjoyment.
Good movie, watch it.

Still here? want more? ok…. This film does an excellent job of portraying the excesses of pre-war, post-economic crash, of the idle rich, quite immersive imo. Hinting at but not dwelling (overly) upon popular opinion and sentiments that prevailed at the time and sticking to telling a good story.

On New Years Day–Jan 01, 2022

tapwater 5 points 2 years ago*.

One of my favorite episodes; thanks for the reminder. Take away the nostalgia and it is just downright funny, the entire cast was on top of their game. It boggles the mind if you take a second to realize that Betty White was a legend before most of us were born.

Absolutely agree with the season 3 being very bad. Bill Pullman is great though!

I like him normally just not in this.

State of Grace (1990)
tapwater 1 points 2 years ago.

Forgotten classic. Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Robin Wright, etc. This is how Robin and Sean met and they’re such great actors that it makes you wonder how much of of the on screen romance was an act.

Dr Death (2021)
tapwater 2 points 2 years ago*.

Decent but not worth the time. At least mine… Enjoyed the overall story but the time jumps are a bit annoying, what year is it? And where did that happen?… Hard to believe this really happened and how corrupt the medical industry really is. I knew it was but not to this degree… I truly think someone could get away with it today. If Dr. Oz, Phil or Drew was a surgeon and had a brain, they could easily.

I have a second diskectomy scheduled and this has me terrified.

Young Frankenstein (1974)

True love never dies. I guess it’s like spontaneously giving your beloved spouse of 47 years a rose or a pet rock or something, that old feeling just gushes out now and again.

tapwater 2 points 2 years ago.

I agree with the sentiment but it’s still odd.

Hook (1991)

I had an apostrophe and this movie is wonderful. Hadn’t seen it since it first came out and I wasn’t old enough to fully appreciate it then. Kinda bittersweet though thinking about Robin, RIP.

Everything you can expect from a sauna trap movie, without any unnecessary bells and whistles. Reminds us all to keep the sauna door free of clutter, and explains why the emergency stop button is usually found on the inside of the elevator. Prepare to be waiting for help in the excessive heat.

The Woman in the Window (2021)
yellow_rose1 4 points 2 years ago*.

I liked it. It had great twists. Amy McAdam did a great job. I would have preferred to see more of Oldman, because I’m a huge fan of his since the mid 80s’. 4/5

tapwater 2 points 2 years ago.

I’m only aware of this because of Oldman too but knew he wouldn’t be in it much, having read the book. This is an Amy Adams showcase and I think she delivered in spades. I enjoyed this, wasn’t slow to me at all. For Hitchcock fans, this is not a remake of Rear Window but an adaptation of a terrific novel that was an homage to Hitch and the film.

Slow West (2015)
tapwater 1 points 2 years ago.

Not what you would expect at all; a punch in the gut that you didn’t know you wanted. In his only feature, writer/director John Maclean takes the best of Leone, the Coens, Tarantino, John Ford, Cassavetes, Eastwood, and others to create his own unique style. Do not take this film lightly, it will break and/or fill your heart if you have one all while making you reconsider what’s truly important.

The Crow (1994)
ivannavatch 6 points 2 years ago.

Pretty jaded view. when i was a kid this movie blew us all away. I rewatched it and it’s still awesome. I don’t agree with your Tim Burton equasion either, The Crow is not whimsical at all. Plus I for one celebrate my birthday every year. 27 was an awesome one and none of the guys was wearing flannel or eyeliner ;)

tapwater 3 points 2 years ago*.

I like the movie people, I just have a another perspective on it. 3/5 stars is high marks for me

I have no idea what that last sentence is supposed to mean but I literally knew people that changed their ‘style’ from grunge to goth almost overnight because of this film.

A birthday is quite different than the anniversary of a movie, give it 3 years and buy the 16K commemorative edition along with much better movies like The Professional, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Shallow Grave, and Lion King that came out same year

I don’t think he intentionally ripped anybody off but aesthetically, the directors’ eyes for color are quite similar. Proyas wasn’t original was the point of that statement. Where is he now and who cares? ‘Dark City’ https://www.primewire.ag/movie/256945-watch-dark-city is even more visually inventive than this but no one talks about it today. If it was led by someone half as charismatic as Brandon, we might be especially if said person died while filming is a further point. Last point is that Proyas, while having a good eye, has no idea how to tell a story; he even ruined ‘I, Robot’ https://www.primewire.ag/movie/751425-watch-i-robot which is an adaptation of a compilation of 9 or 10 stories by one of the greatest Sci-Fi authors ever, Isaac Asimov.

The Crow (1994)
tapwater -3 points 2 years ago*.

Since when is a 27th anniversary something to celebrate? It’s a decent movie but it is mostly style over substance, Brandon and his charisma carried it and if he hadn’t died it would be remembered as that Tim Burton rip-off he was in before he went on to bigger and better things. All it does for me now is bring back memories of a bunch of poseurs pretending to know about Joy Division and switching from flannel to eyeliner… Fun fact; Shannon Lee (Brandon’s sis) briefly sang for the band Medicine (Time Baby II/III from the soundtrack)

Ten Minutes to Midnight (2020)
tapwater 2 points 3 years ago.

Do not avoid, campy horror fans. This is a fun homage to the 80’s classics. Like most of those, the first 15 minutes or so are kind of boring but it picks up quickly. You have gore, cheesy humor, and horror icon Caroline Williams (Stretch from TX Chainsaw 2), what more could you want?

Them (2021)
tapwater 0 points 3 years ago*.

The horror is nonsensical and the history is ridiculous. It has its moments but it goes from kind of exciting to absolutely boring over and over and it blatantly rips off so many other stories/films/shows that it becomes a rollercoaster that you want a refund for to spend on the bumper cars. If you start it, you will probably want to finish it but will probably regret the whole experience afterward. And I think that whether black or white, this is offensive.

Do you mean Japan? Godzilla was created in 1954 and was a Japanese kaiju film and that was the first one. I’ve not seen any Chinese movies depicting Godzilla but hey, I might be wrong…….😁

tapwater 1 points 3 years ago.

Godzilla is actually (popular word) a French metal band formed in 1996 that traveled back in time to the 50’s and made some films to increase future album sales.

Kung Fu (2021) S1 E1
tardisrider 1 points 3 years ago.

yes she was small when he passed but in the ty vid tells the story of her mom giving her an old box of stuff then she took over as executor of his estate and finding the script she had alway heard about. really go look up the vid hear it from her own mouth.

tapwater 1 points 3 years ago.

I’ve seen it, and I don’t believe her. I think she is a parasite living off his legacy. The story of both shows is very basic, so how how much writing did there have to be?

Kung Fu (2021) S1 E1
tardisrider -1 points 3 years ago.

no bruce shoped the script and the networks passed then reworked it and gave it to Carradine. look on yt his daughter talks about finding the script and working w writers to modernize it for today. its called warrior….

tapwater 1 points 3 years ago*.

His daughter barely knew him, she believed the same stories we did. Little known fact, she briefly sang for a band called Medicine which is the American (almost) equivalent of My Bloody Valentine.

Kung Fu (2021) S1 E1
tardisrider 3 points 3 years ago*.

Chinese culture is known for low male chauvinism and female warriors go waaayyy back and while i know little about shaolin teachings i think i’m openminded enough to give it a try. ty for letting me know this is nothing in common with the 70’s show david carradine et al stole from bruce lee. ok now i’ve seen it i’ll give you the bad acting. unfortunately thin script and cw overdramatics make this a pass

tapwater -1 points 3 years ago*.

Bruce Lee had nothing to do with the original show or the idea of creating it despite all the stories you have heard. He co-wrote a movie called ‘Circle of Iron’ and died before filming. Carradine took over his role and the film is now considered a cult classic. https://www.primewire.li/movie/174308-watch-circle-of-iron Somehow that got mixed up with ‘Kung Fu’ and people have believed that Carradine had ‘stolen’ from Lee ever since. I did too until I did some research.

I hate the original but to give it a little credit the show employed lots of Asian-American actors.

Kung Fu (2021)
tapwater 0 points 3 years ago.

The original was horrible, and this sounds like it’ll be worse. Appropriation of culture at it’s finest. Is it a coincidence that this is debuting now?

Quote from an article interviewing the ‘star’:

“It feels really empowering to get to reclaim [martial arts] and to say you know what, it’s not a stereotype. It’s something that we can be really proud of because it’s a huge part of [Asian] culture,” Liang says. That this is also the first American martial arts show to be written by an Asian woman and to focus on an Asian American family is not lost on Liang.

WARNING!! WATCH AT YOUR OWN PERIL!

This movie literally made me gag. As a huge Smiths/Morrissey fan I wanted to like this so much but hearing great lyrics regurgitated as vapid dialogue by terrible actors was intolerable, so much so I couldn’t finish watching. Bottom line, this is atrocious; fans will hate it and anyone else won’t get the terrible joke.

To put off anyone still considering watching this, the basic synopsis is a group of friends get really depressed about a band breaking up. WTF?! I don’t know about you but I have loved lots of great bands that have broken up and never shed a tear.

Tony Scott deserves some love too people, RIP. Tarantino wrote a great script but he did not direct this, Tony did. He is easily one of the best action directors of all time. Tarantino knew that and that is why he didn’t direct this himself. Stepping off the soapbox, this is one of my absolute favorites… “Sit down boy, grab yourself an eggroll. We got everything here from a diddle eyed Joe to a damned if I know.” What happened to Bronson Pinchot?
