The search takes Clouseau and Deux-Deux through a series of disasters in Paris, London, Switzerland, Venice, and the jungles of Africa. When they meet the agent, they discover he is actually an insurance agent, who arranged all the disasters they've been through to show the everyday hazards of police work and persuade Clouseau to purchase an insurance policy!

On leaving the store, he thoughtlessly takes his shopping cart with him and is chided by a narrator for having committed theft and broken the law! Clouseau tries to return the cart to the store but sees a policeman on patrol and, spooked, runs in the opposite direction with the cart. Prodded by the narrator into feeling guilty and fearful of arrest, Clouseau makes several attempts to lose the cart, but it keeps coming back to him!

Clouseau is convinced there is a monster loose on the premises, especially after Deux-Deux, when Clouseau wasn't looking, drank a bubbly potion from a beaker and turned into a horrible creature. Deux-Deux keeps changing back and forth, burping before each transformation, and not remembering anything he did in the interim. Finally, Clouseau realizes that Deux-Deux is the creature and flees the house, with Deux-Deux chasing after him, changing into the monster at second intervals.

While searching the premises, Clouseau finds the glass, drinks its contents (jewel included), and is rushed to surgery. Clouseau tries unsuccessfully to sedate Lou with sleeping powder mixed in with his porridge, then appeals to Lou's vanity by saying how Lou's chiseled profile would look good on film. Clouseau is permitted by Lou to take a photograph and secrets a rifle inside a fake camera with which to "shoot" Lou.

Craving rest and relaxation, Woody is determined to send the nautical canine on his way, eventually blowing him up with a shore mine. The pirate doesn't appreciate this and forces Woody to walk the plank... but, being none too smart, the old tar often ends up many times in the drink himself and not the woodpecker.

The Blotch looks like an ink blot and can change his form to blend into any surroundings, and Clouseau and Deux-Deux are unable to locate him even as he swipes huge paintings from behind their backs and loads the paintings onto a truck. The Commissioner is furious when the Louvre is entirely fleeced and orders Clouseau and Deux-Deux to repaint every missing masterpiece!
