FYI on rez: I looked at two versions, 365MB and 893MB, and both are a bit blurry (I was hoping for significant image improvement on the latter); they must’ve been made from a lower-rez transfer. Mentioning this in case prospective viewers have bandwidth issue — the bigger file is not that much better in this case.

I think this doc. makes clear that nurture plays an ENORMOUS and still-under-credited role in everyone’s life — as does the life-lottery of being born rich / middling / poor, in a neighborhood with good or lousy schools, etc.

Pleasant period show with very good production values for its time (shot in 1991). A bit more of a soap opera than a compelling drama, but an intelligent one, and an interesting look at the 1920s, esp. some women’s lives in the 1920s.

As noted in the blurb above, it was created by Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins, who created “Upstairs, Downstairs” — and Eileen Atkins (Dame Eileen Atkins!) has become one of the most distinguished actors of her generation.

If, for whatever reason, the cast is largely new to you (I’m not assuming that it is, but if it is), the you might also enjoy the work of some other cast members — lots of superb British actors, among them Dorothy Atkinson, Polly Walker, James Purefoy, Danny Webb, and Anna Chancellor.

The ending of this ep bothered the hell out of me. The wife spits out, “You’re all bastards!”, conveniently overlooking that her scumbag husband was indirectly responsible for dozens of deaths in his capacity as a money launderer for drug gangs.

The detectives’ disdain for the DA was similarly disturbing. Drugs cause an excruciating amount of suffering and death; the DA’s about-face re: targeting the wife of a white-collar accomplice to drug gangs was just fine by me.

A very, very disturbing ending.

I don’t think that its that simple mate. Aparat works fine for me, as does Clipwatching MOST of the time. Other people have issues with Mixdrop and Doodwatch. I have no problems with ANY of them at present. Not sure WHY that is. Only site that NEVER works is that Streamz nonsense for me and that’s the ONLY site that has EVER told me to turn off adblock. Maybe try some different adblock extensions or a different browser maybe? Give Ublock a go. Best of luck mate. I understand your frustration and you have my sympathy.

I use Streamzz with some frequency; my browser is Firefox, with uBlock Origin. After years of experimenting, those are my preferred browser and ad-blocker.

FF does one weird thing, but it’s so minor that I don’t care: When I post comments using Disqus, FF sometimes inserts and extra line-space. That’s the only hiccup I’ve had with it, and in all other ways, including privacy issues, I’m happier w FF than I was with Chrome and Opera.

Hah isn’t it funny how these things work for some people and not for others! Maybe it depends on which part of the world you’re in.. Drag for me as a lot of old foreign movies just appear here on Clip and Aparat and i can’t seem to use either. I’ll try to find UBlock.. I’ve even successfully used Streamz occasionally, see.. Funny!! Thanks for your reply anyhow, yeah i just got a wee fit of frustration at yet another movie i won’t be able to watch :))x

Have you tried a different browser? I used Firefox, and I’ve had no trouble with any of the sites. *Disclaimer: I’ve never tried Aparat, so I can’t say for sure that it works on FF, but all the others do, including CW.

Fwiw, uBlock is the best adblocker I’ve ever used — and it’s free. (I switched quite a while back, when Adblocker Plus started letting stuff slip thru for me.)

Also fwiw, I prefer Firefox, after years of using Chrome and then Opera — and I think FF is far more attuned to helping users maintain privacy (or some privacy).

For others who hope to see (or re-watch) this: Several years ago I read that the show hadn’t been released on DVD bc of the cost of securing the rights for all the music that was used in each ep. Dunno whether that’s accurate, but I’m sharing the info in case it’s of use.

Oh, I don’t mind — goes with the territory. In my (admittedly limited) experience, websites like these tend to be visited disproportionately by reactionary boys — and I do mean boys. There are always fewer women, and they tend to behave like adults.

Read some comments on columns in the NYT — you’ll feel better. :) ( = lots of smart grownups who want a better world.)

I’m just sorry that you have to deal with the downvoting bullshed, esp. given that you were kind enough to go out of your way to help other viewers by sharing the “wrong links” info. Hang in there!

A sardonic comedy (no laugh-track) set in a high-profile Parisian talent agency; it’s funny enough and smart enough to make me not mind subtitles (I don’t object to them on principle, but I read 8+ hrs/day for work, so I’m not keen on reading even more when I unwind with TV).

Slightly over-hyped — more like 7.3 out of 10 (not 8.2), but good and worth watching. Not as biting as, say, anything by Armando Ianucci, or “Arrested Development,” or “Succession,” or “Back” — but if you like any of those, you’ll probably like this series.

Pick your battles. While I wholeheartedly endorse replacing gender specific titles, such as fireman and policeman, it seems a bit anal to scrub words like manpower from our vocabulary. Is the word human considered sexist?

rapscallion, this is a battle worth fighting. “Man” has been used as a verb (man the battle stations) bc with few exceptions, only men had paid work — and women’s work was considered unimportant.

Maybe you’re too young to know how hard life was for women even in 1980, when they became a significant presence in the workforce, but I’m not.

  • My sister, a corp. lawyer, couldn’t get a credit card on her own despite having an excellent job/salary/education; her boyfriend, who earned less, had no problem getting one.
  • Women routinely got fired when they were pregnant — wasn’t illegal.
  • Ditto when they got married.
  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg was chastised by a Harvard law professor for taking a spot that cd’ve gone to a man; does anybody really think that she wasn’t more qualifed than her male peers? (Her CV shows us that she was.)

And on and on and on. And, women still face a lot of bull in the workplace, including lower wages for equal pay. Language matters ecause it expresses how we see the world, and too many people still have misgivings about women taking their place in the world. SO let’s stop using words that reinforce the idea that women don’t belong in the workplace, or that their work isn’t valuable.

A final thought: Would you be OK if the word “white” were used to refer to all people of all ethnic backgrounds ? “White the battle stations” and “We don’t have enough whitepower to get the job done.” It’s completely parallel — all Black people, and all women (of any color) didn’t have equal rights & protection under the law until recently.

Language matters.

I think it’s safe to say that he’s already at the top of the heap. :) He had already appeared on the UK’s “Live at the Apollo,” and now he hosts his a well-regarded show in the US (where the competition is pretty stiff).

This is a massively awful series — typical ITV fare, with a strong element of soap opera (melodramatic occurrences, many fraught glances) and abysmal writing that presents 2-dimensional characters who periodically act not in character because Plot Twist #46 requires Action #31. (Rule #1 of good writing: Character determines plot, not vice versa.)

Huge waste of time, huge waste of some acting talent — as is the case with ITV, the cast was a blend of some wonderful actors (Morven Christie, James Cosmo) and some unskilled soap-opera regulars.

@Infinitystar — You can’t compare djt’s admin, or post-presidency, to anyone else’s. Past leaders are spoken of for various reasons, by both admirers and detractors, but of all the US presidents from the past 120 years, only djt has been a danger to democracy itself.

In this case, though, we need to hear about what he’s doing — he’s a dangerous would-be autocrat who has created major cracks in our democracy. We can’t bury our heads in the sand when it comes to his exhortations to his nutty followers.

That said, I think he’ll soon be in jail — and not long thereafter, his decades of fast food and sitting on his lardy ass will take him away for good. Yes, his kids want to run for office. but I don’t see a political future for those incompetent, non-charismatic idiots.

A very good, suspenseful series (S01 is better than S02) — well-written, great cast, great production values. And a bit poignant, as it shows how circumscribed the lives of women were after WWII, no matter how brilliant they were and no matter how significant their contribution to the war effort had been. 8.3/10 for S01, 7.5/10 for S02.

Breathless (2013)

Excellent cast and excellent production values, but they’re wasted on mediocre writing — a melodramatic backstory linking all the eps, and annoyingly expository dialog (“You know I’ve come back to look after Dad so you can get married”). Also annoying because the overall setting — an OB/GYN ward in the 1960s, with all that was changing in the world — is inherently interesting.

It’s worth watching if you need some relief from the stress of COVID, unemployment, and insurrection — and if you like these actors / this era.

Lupin (2021)

This has been wildly overhyped — it’s good but not great (not even very good). And even after choosing to suspend disbelief so you can accept the overall premise of the series, there are way too many implausibilities (such as insanely insufficient security in a crucial scene). The writers think they’re more clever than they are, and that self-congratulatory sheen permeates the series — and makes it far less satisfying to watch, because complexity has been sacrificed (or the writers just weren’t capable of it).

I’m not sorry to have watched it, but I wish my expectations had been appropriate. Lower yours and you’ll probably like it — I’d give it about 6.3 out of 10.

At present, there are no links here, but the 2 eps I’ve seen (I think they’re on YT) are great. And, I wd call this more of a not-dark drama, with dark-comedy undertones, about a criminal (played by the superb Pete Postlethwaite). If you have the chance to see this, I encourage you to check it out.

A lovely, low-key, slyly funny show. If you like lots of action, you won’t like it; if you’re happy with well-written characters, esp. eccentric ones, this is for you.

And an fyi about the lyrics for the theme: “loamy earth,” not “lonely earth”! Bugs me to see that error in the subtitles — and dismays me that language is being degraded daily by the intertubes.

Like NoelBluesky, I always choose mixdrop — I have great results from it unless I’m using my vpn and the file is more than 400 MB. (If the file is small, then even with my vpn it streams pretty well — right now I’m watching something that’s 198 MB, w-o any problems.)

Anyone who thinks that a person on the left condones domestic violence and murder knows nothing. For your own sake, pls stop drinking the Fox-Breitbart-etc. Kool-Aid — propaganda isn’t news (news = FACTS). For ex., those entities won’t tell you that the US accounts for almost 20% of the global death toll from COVID despite having only 4% of the global population — and that’s bc of the current admin’s incompetence / venality.

So if you enjoy, y’know, being alive and healthy / having a decent income, then vote for the party that wants to improve all Americans’ lives, not for the party that cares only about its corporate overlords. For the past 40 years, the GOP has given the already-wealthy huge tax breaks, and has passed laws making it harder for ordinary ppl to fight for fair wages. You’re now making only 60% of what you’d be earning if the policies of 1945-75 were still in place — and you can thank the GOP for that. (See stats in Robert Reich’s most recent Guardian column.) If you earn 35K, you shd be earning 61K. How does that grab you?
