Sakho & Mangane (2019)
TX2Guns 1 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I had read about this series while it was in production on the Killing times and the premise and location (Senegal/Darkur) sounded promising, however the slick French (Canal) production and exotic locale were not enough to hold this one together. As a general rule, I am a fan of crime/supernatural hybrids if the story and writing is solid (Jordskott comes to mind) but unfortunately the writing only holds water for a few episodes before the entire ball of wax takes a goofy turn. Combine this with some hit and miss acting and really BAD camera work (I got dizzy in parts) and this is yet another series I will forget about after I hit Submit. (FYI: Had to grab English subs since all the links were in French, but no problem).

Foyle's War (2002)

Foyle’s War remains a high water mark when it comes to solid British Historical Crime TV, I cannot think of another in it’s league (except maybe Inspector Morse and Endeavour) where the writing and the character development are so spot on and engaging. If you listen closely in some of the episodes you can get a really good history lesson on what it was like to live in Great Britain during WW2, the episodes set during the blitz are especially good. It is a unique series where the writers actually developed the main character as WW2 progresses and eventually fades into the Cold War and in doing so creates a hybrid spy/crime series in the process.A++

A Young Doctor's Notebook (2012)

Masterfully adapted from Mikhail Bulgakov’s collection of short stories, this is a really well done historical dark comedy series set during the Russian Revolution. Hamm and Radcliffe are hilarious!

The Serpent (2021)

Not bad for the BBC. The writing, cast and directing were all top notch. Tahar Rahim knocks it out of the park as usual as the grifter/psychopath/mickey slipper. I was equally impressed with Billy Howle as well. My only complaint about the series was the back and forth chronology. There are better ways to tell a story than playing Time Bandits for 8 hours.

Blizzard of Souls (2021)

Hands down, one of the best foreign war dramas I have seen in quite some time. An unflinching, wonderfully crafted tale of the birth of the Latvian State as seen through the eyes of a 17 year old boy who lived through The horrors of the Eastern Front in WW1, The Russian Revolution and the Latvian Civil War for Independence. The historical accuracy, screenplay, editing and cast are all top shelf. A Real triumph for the people of Latvia! Thanks Linkers!

Texas 6 (2020)

Really enjoyed this documentary about a Small West Texas Town 6 Man Football Team. The crew did a great job capturing the love and spirit of a small TX Town, something that is disappearing too fast in America these days.

Did you notice there is also a tv series? I think I started watching and stopped, may have to give it another go.

The series was a disaster. Another example of BAD writing trying to made up for with a GOOD Cast. Understanding that a movie or series is always an “adaptation” of a previous work (ie a book) the Writers and Directors for this series got arrogant and CHANGED vital parts of Eco’s exacting narrative in favor of creating sub-plots which served no purpose. Do yourself a favor and read the book and watch the movie, it’s time much better spent.

Efterforskningen (2020)

I followed this story all the way through in 2017. Very tragic. Too bad they did away with the death penalty in Denmark after they hung all the nazi’s and nazi collaborators. If there was ever somebody to deserve DEATH, it was this piece of human garbage. That being said this is a very high end Nordic production with solid writing, great character development and great actors to boot, including one of my old favorites, Rolf Lassgard.

The Midnight Sky (2020)

Although nowhere close to the book, I liked it. It was a bare bones story about all the entanglements of the human condition with a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi backdrop!

The Surgeon's Cut (2020) S1 E1

One of the best Medical Documentaries I have seen in quite some time. Highly recommended.
