s post above. Also, did you not realize they were trying to kill it before they left the ship. They did not want it to reach land and kill others. They also were too far from land in the beginning to abandon ship. Traveling during the day would not guarantee them surviving if they could not reach land before nightfall. It had wings and could they wait till night and kill them enroute to land.
