Watch any Hungarian movie, hailing from Budapest, but I found this to be a disappointment. It’s too much like torture porn. The camera didn’t have to linger on the psycho fondling dead women’s breasts, so it seemed exploitative. Neither did one get any sense of the dire political straights at the time when Hungary was basically run by the Soviet KGB. Many political prisoners were tortured and executed at the prison court yard, yet there was no sense of the oppression that was going on in people’s every day lives, no sense of an allusion from what the serial murderer was getting away with, to what the Soviets were getting away with. The nefarious, toxic environment (that lead to the failed Hungarian revolution of 1956 that has just taken place behind the scenes) is only hinted at when one character gets run over as he is riding his bike at the end.
