From what I recall he doesn’t show up until the last season or so. He came in to to fill a space left by some other original characters and it wasn’t the same. I like him as an actor, but wasn’t too happy about him in Misfits and think I stopped watching because of it.
Joe Gilgun started in Season 3 after Robert Sheehan (Nathan) left. Lots of people feel the same as you and stopped watching when they reshuffled the cast but I really enjoyed it. It’s worth giving it another go.
