I may have been a bit quick to say there is “no such thing” as a 10 film. I too have a few that may rate a 10, bearing in mind that they rate a 10 in my opinion, and others may not agree. I always site “Memories Of Murder” as a 10 film. I loved that film. Thanks for keeping me honest.

augusts1 0 points 2 years ago.

No worries. Not heard of Memories Of Murder. Just looked it up & there are 2; one in ‘03 & another in ‘90. Which are you referring to here?

The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special (2020)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Hilarious holiday special from two previous RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants. Campy, cheesy, irreverent & over the top doesn’t even begin to describe this creative celebration of the holidays. If you like drag you’ll love this! Even if you don’t you might love it.

I felt that Kendall had better emoting & Pythia did a better overall lip sync show shrug

Priyanka’s final look tho -WOW-

augusts1 0 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I was really rooting for Pythia. Loved her quirky aesthetic. But Icesis Couture was chosen for her overall arc of improvement over the season. The judges spoke about that in their deliberations quite a bit.

Priyanka’s look was definitely stellar! Love her.

1/2 hour into the pilot & I’m bored af. Too much teen drama, not enough wilderness survival/horror.

Very Bad Things (1998)
augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Wow, this is what I’d call the epitome of a dark comedy. Found myself laughing at the over the top but great performances by the stellar ensemble cast & then sombered by the dark circumstances of the plot. Definitely not a movie that everyone will get or appreciate though due to it’s very dark humor. It’s very twisted. Worth a watch if you like dark comedies.

Miller's Crossing (1990)
Bete Noir 2 points 3 years ago.

A much-overlooked Coen brothers gem. Inspired performance by Gabriel Byrne.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

My fave of theirs. I own it on DVD & have watched it many times.

Miller's Crossing (1990)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Classic Coen Brothers. Very dark gangster film. This was Barry Sonnenfeld’s last film for the Coens of 3 as DP (Blood Simple & Raising Arizona were the 1st two). Just beautifully shot. Stellar acting by an incredible cast. Well worth a watch or two.

Mother/Android (2021)
grubgun 2 points 2 years ago.

I mean, not a bad movie. Using ideas we’ve all seen before. A little bit of Terminator…a little Quiet Place. Nothing remarkable, but also not a complete waste of time. I’ll give it a 4.5/10, bearing in mind that there is no such thing as a 10 Movie.

augusts1 -3 points 2 years ago.

I don’t agree. There are definitely movies I’d rate a 10. Amelie, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Magnolia, American Beauty are ones I can think of off the top of my head at the moment I’d rate as perfect 10s.

I’m pretty sure she’s supposed to be from Russia. That was mentioned early on wasn’t it?

Yes, she sounds Russian or from the Eastern block at least. IDR if it was mentioned but the accent is so obvious. Nothing Irish about the accent.

Oh ya I can’t Even imagine trying to watch this with English dub. You miss so much of the realness / emotion without hearing the original voice actors . Glad you enjoyed it , I’m probably gonna rewatch This series again soon myself .

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Agreed. I actually started watching it back when it 1st came out but stopped half way through because of the dubbing, it drove me crazy.

You gonna enjoy this series . 3 season masterpiece. Not too long or too short , perfect.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

I’ve already enjoyed this 1st season. So glad there are subs available instead of the original dubbing which made it so hard to watch.

Soylent Green (1973)
PonderThis 2 points 2 years ago.

I was in jr high when this movie came out but for some reason I’ve never watched it. Maybe because I was never a fan of Edward G. Robinson and I certainly didn’t like Charlton Heston! The one actor who is still alive is Taylor-Young and I honestly know nothing about her. I have next week off, so maybe I’ll make time to watch this movie and put aside my dislike of Heston.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

It’s definitely a classic sci-fi movie worth seeing at least once since it’s influence has permeated pop culture since it came out. I recall it being on TV regularly back when I was a kid then so I’ve seen it several times.

Cool, I’m looking forward to it. The site that I originally watched this on when it was first out only had dubbing which was horrid so I stopped watching it about half way through as much as I loved it. Thank goddess Primewire has subs available!

It’s humorous to me so many peoople watching stuff today have never experienced the “oh sh*t! what was that? I gotta wait a week!” feeling. Some of the best memories I have are of that type of format & some are recent! Dexter put people on the edge of their seat quite often from 2006-2013.

It sure did but I didn’t get into it until after the show was over so I could binge as needed lol.

Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

As a huge fan of the original Evil Dead trilogy I was fearful this series would be a sad facsimile of it. But as soon as I saw the 1st episode I knew my fears were in vain & that I as a viewer was in capable hands.

This series is everything I wanted it to be & more. It’s much more coherent than the trilogy & is a total blast. Rami & crew really connected this w/the trilogy & still manages to bring the gore, horror, humor & cheesiness of the originals. Plus the new characters bring whole new lives & storylines that are explored. I’m kind of glad they went out on a high note & ended it after 3 seasons. Bruce Campbell felt he had done everything he wanted to do w/Ash in those 3 seasons, he stated in an interview I saw w/him. Best to go out w/a bang that is bloody, fun & a wild ride than wait for the fire to die out.

The Smell of Us (2015)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Very similar to Clark’s 1st film ‘Kids’ just in Paris, France. Not much on plot or character development, so if you prefer those in your movies then steer clear. I’d say pretty controversial for the wild activities the group of kids engage in. I’m glad I saw it though since I’ve not seen anything of his since his 2nd film ‘Bully’, but doubt I’ll watch it again.

The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (2016) S4 E7

Great episode. And I loved seeing the special guest judge.

Yes love Ray (he’s so hot in the series Ash Vs. Evil Dead), he had some really constructive criticism for the dolls.

Arabian Nights (1974)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Controversial for 1974. Some might say it is even now due to the male full frontal nudity & erections. Interesting movie from a historical perspective but not that good as far as acting. Pasolini was known for his controversial movies though especially his film Salo: Or 120 Days Of Sodom.

We're Here (2020)
augusts1 0 points 2 years ago.

I watched a couple of epis of the 1st season & I just couldn’t get into it. Shangela just gets on my last nerve. She just comes across so fake to me. And as much as I love Bob & Eureka it all seemed so forced & inauthentic. I’m subscribed to Bob’s youtube channel & she puts out far better & authentic content there imo.

The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (2016) S4 E6
alexisbits 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I definitely agree that Jade brought nothing but drama. I even made a remark about all the drama and lack of horror on the first episode. Her look this challenge was her best horror look yet. I think it was good enough to keep her out of the bottom. Especially if they apply “behind the scenes counts” across the board.

You are 100% correct about Sigourney. It’s all glamour with her. And this particular look was lacking. You could tell the “hairy boobs” was just some bits of wig sewn around the edges of the dress. Spirit-gum some hair ONTO the breasts, add more elsewhere, and stop with that “Jessica Rabbit silhouette”. We’ll see if she learns.

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The thing w/Jade though is that sure she did her best look so far on this epi but the other’s looks were just so far superior that even at her best she couldn’t come close.

I’m really disappointed in Saint. She won the Resurrection competition they did last year but is so full of doubt now. Her presentations are lackluster although she’s had a few good looks. I was really rooting for her. I hope she can pull herself up which she did this epi but I think it may not be enough.

IMO Dahli is the clear front runner. He has been consistent w/amazing looks each week & has a great attitude/outlook on it all. La Zavaleta & Hoso aren’t too far behind although Hoso had a stumble last week w/that squid monster look which put her in the bottom. But Dahli’s looks have been so strong it’s obvious he will be on top.

Very sad news. The series will not be back for a 5th season. The co-creators (who were also previously romantic partners who broke up awhile back) have decided to explore other creative avenues. I posted a link to an article about this but it was deleted.

The Box (2021)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Wow, intense first episode that kept my interest & built some good anxiety inducing drama. Performances were quite excellent. I’m hooked.

The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (2016) S4 E6
alexisbits 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I get that they didn’t want to cut Jade a break, but they talked about how “behind the scenes counts” with Hoso. Jade lost her cat and couldn’t even be there. That’s hard! Yet she didn’t say a word to anyone, for fear of “bringing them down”. She just focused on her work and did a pretty good job. That should’ve kept her out of the bottom. Now, as much as I love Sigourney Beaver, she deserved the bottom.

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Jade was quite a drama mama behind the scenes prior to this epi & her looks have been consistently underwhelmingly unhorror imo. They’ve booted most of the other drama mamas too (except La Zavaleta but she’s turned out some incredible horror looks, so I can see why she’s still there) so it really was Jade’s time to go despite losing her cat & doing the best she’s done so far as far as her horror drag this epi. Unfortunately it was a little too late!

And Sigourney needed that swift kick of being in the bottom. The judges were correct saying she’s too glamour & not enough filth, horror & griminess w/basically too similar silhouettes week after week (even though many were beautiful but this is not RPDR).

Documentary Now! (2015)
augusts1 0 points 2 years ago.

I just found out about this series. The first epi spoofing Grey Gardens is seriously funny, especially towards the end when it turns really dark! Hader truly captures the essence of Little Evie from the original but both are great. If you’ve not seen Grey Gardens the doc, it’s a must see for the sheer oddity of it. The movie version with Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange is incredible too. Highly recommend both.

Grey Gardens (1975)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Iconic doc about the everyday lives of Kennedy adjacent family members who are in their decline. The Maysle brothers were able to capture this time capsule so well due in part to their ability to create a trusting relationship w/this memorable mother/daughter duo. This doc has inspired legions of documentarians since. Very well worth a watch, maybe two!

El Dorado (1967)
augusts1 -1 points 2 years ago.

I watched Wayne’s oscar winning movie ‘True Grit’ a few years ago & was appalled at how awful his acting was. I know it was a different time & acting styles were different but JW’s acting was more about embodying a ‘rugged’ macho American way of life that people revered back then (& still do) than actual talent & skill. I can’t imagine this or anything else he does being any better than ‘True Grit’. Love the remake by The Cohen Brothers though. It’s SO excellent & light years away from the original.

Swiss Army Man (2016)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

If you want an oddball movie, watch this. It’s simultaneously dark, funny & strange w/an impossible storyline that works on the strength of the two leads’ acting/chemistry. Definitely not a movie for everyone since it’s quite out there but if the flatulent corpse doesn’t get you at the start don’t bother haha.

Walrus Yes: The Making of Tusk (2019)

For a flick that shows such a blatant lack of substance, releasing a Making Of was really uncalled for. lol

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

@GialloAficionado I liked it for 3/4 of the movie. When the big reveal happened w/the really fake looking walrus suit, that’s when it started going sideways for me. I felt the movie had a lot of substance though w/the various messages it brought about consent & deception. Probably one of Parks’ best performances that I’ve seen.

Glad I saw your comment since I’ve not seen this BTS doc.

Flack (2019)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Love Anna & this entire cast. It’s just very whipsmart, the pace is so fast & the ensemble cast is just tight w/it. Wish they had more episodes! I love the tone of it, being very sarcastic, funny & sad in equal turns.

This had been canceled by the British network it started on during or after they had finished shooting S2, then Amazon picked it up at the end of ‘20 to air earlier in ‘21. They’ve greenlit a S3 fortunately but they still haven’t announced when it’s airing. Probably air in ‘22 since it’s mid November at this point.

A Field in England (2013)

Odd indie film. I love Ben Wheatley’s newer movies but this is a bit too pretentious, out there & nonsensical for my taste. Some great acting & black & white cinematography but doubt I’ll watch it again.

Dexter: New Blood (2021) S1 E1

Dexter: New Blood, commits the worst crime ever…it’s terminally boring. Yes. They made a show about a serial killer boring. Think about that for a second. Don’t even get me started on the CGI deer. Oy vey. So bad. As for those who dunk on people reviewing the 1st episode…if they can’t bother to make an interesting 1st episode…how good can the rest of the series be?

I enjoyed it, except for the fake looking deer lol. They had to spend time establishing the new characters & the locale. His struggle to not kill was intriguing to me. I could watch MCH do anything, he really is such an amazing actor & the rest of the cast is great too.

Watched the 1st epi of Season 9: Cold Snap. Slow start but since it’s MCH who I love I was mesmerized & they had to establish his new locale where he’s settled for the past 10 years.
The new characters are great & there’s appearances of a couple old characters too & of course a couple of kills, not all human either. All in all a decent start with some intrigue building in the next epi from the preview shown. I look forward to seeing how the season progresses.

Battle Royale (2000)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

A completely over the top & bonkers thriller that inspired the Squid Game & Alice In Borderland series. Extremely violent yet somehow has moments of dark humor amongst the kills throughout that I found myself laughing aloud (e.g. the death count after every kill). Not much of a plot except the game of survival & who lives in the end. Pretty morose movie, so I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone.
