Reservation Dogs (2021)
augusts1 9 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Watched the 1st epi.& it is pretty good. More drama than comedy but there’s definitely some funny moments. Great & interesting characters by the young cast. Beautifully shot too. Waititi co-created & exec produced it but didn’t direct. I’ll definitely keep watching.

“Filmed entirely on the Muscogee Nation reservation in eastern Oklahoma, the network says the half-hour comedy is the first show on cable TV in which all the writers, directors and regular characters on the series are Indigenous.”

augusts1 11 points 2 years ago*.

Love that, thanks for that info. Love Taika Waititi’s filmmaking style. His What We Do In The Dark movie & series enamored me to him forever. So I’m down to watch this!

In Bruges (2008)
augusts1 10 points 2 years ago.

Great movie. Lots of dark humor. Both Colin & Brendan are pitch perfect & have such great chemistry on screen. Worth seeing.

Dexter: New Blood (2021)
puffythebongslayer 5 points 2 years ago.

I watched this before the original and I like it is it similar to the original cause if it is I got along binge watch I’m about to partake in

augusts1 7 points 2 years ago.

Yes you will have a long binge since it is quite similar in atmosphere & tone, although it takes place in Miami.

Primer (2005)
augusts1 6 points 2 years ago.

Excellent & very complex & confusing movie. Took me several watches to really catch most of it. But worth the watch. Great performances are what really carry it. To think it was made on a shoestring budget too.

Peacemaker (2022)
augusts1 6 points 2 years ago.

Great pilot. I’m not a big superhero fan but I do like Cena & he does a great job in this. Entire cast is great too. Writing is top notch & there’s a lot of humor throughout. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Empire of the Sun (1987)
augusts1 5 points 3 months ago.

Got to see this on the big screen back when it came out. Went in not knowing a thing about it & was blown away. Incredible acting & stunning visually. I recall feeling overwhelmed since there is so much going on in the plot/on screen. I can’t imagine what it was like going through the real life historical occurrence. Just an amazing film all the way around that I need to see again.

Just watched the debut epi & not surprised at how great it is so far since horror director James Wan exec. produced it. He has made some great films, like The Conjuring & Insidious & Saw. If you don’t know him look him up.

Loved the gradual buildup through the epi & the character development is great from the two leads & the writers. I’ve seen before Athie in The Get Down series but not Dina in anything. They did a great job w/the production design too.

Carnivàle (2003)
augusts1 5 points 2 years ago.

This show is amazing. I discovered it through friends nearly a decade after it came out. Sad it only got 2 seasons but it made the best of those 2. Just incredible acting from a stellar cast w/equally incredible writing & production design.

Dark (2017) S1 E10

Wow what a great cliffhanger finale. Love this show. So glad I gave it another chance. It is quite the mindf**k.

Strange Way of Life (Short 2023) (2023)
Alien 3 points 6 months ago.

WHOA! Can you imagine anyone filming that with a straight face? So corny. And it was wonderful.

augusts1 5 points 3 months ago.

That’s what I love about the majority of Almodovar’s movies. The camp factor is what makes them unique, fascinating & over the top. Plus Spanish movies tend to have a lot of camp in them from what I’ve seen. That may be due to Almodovar’s influence over his film career in the ‘70s but also from Spanish telenovelas which are campy af.

I just found out about this movie. Wish it was longer than 30 minutes though. The subject matter deserves far more than that imo.

Severance (2022)
augusts1 5 points 2 years ago.

Watched the 2nd epi & was marvelling at the production & sound design. The music & sound effects really create such a creepy tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s so well done. Loving the suspense thriller vibe causing one to wonder what really is going on here. Highly recommended.

Viola Davis is a bad-ass.

augusts1 5 points 1 year ago.

Amen! Such a major talent.

Swiss Army Man (2016)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

If you want an oddball movie, watch this. It’s simultaneously dark, funny & strange w/an impossible storyline that works on the strength of the two leads’ acting/chemistry. Definitely not a movie for everyone since it’s quite out there but if the flatulent corpse doesn’t get you at the start don’t bother haha.

Human Zoos (2019)
grasshopper rex 8 points 1 year ago.

People suck

augusts1 4 points 1 year ago*.

Yes they do. I’ve seen a short doc awhile back that detailed some of this crapola where POC were featured in circuses & mocked & ridiculed for being less than they really are. Just horrendous.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Mikeonalpha 4 points 2 years ago.

It’s a spoof on the novel/movie, The Girl on the Train - out a few years ago, and also The Woman in the Window - has all the cliches in the book - very clever

augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

It’s a spoof on the entire genre, not just those two.

Nine Perfect Strangers (2021) S1 E1
Birdsforme 3 points 2 years ago.

I was on the fence about watching this or not until Nicole Kidman`s character entered and stirred up the pot making it all interesting.

augusts1 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Agreed. I knew it would be good though if Nicole was in it & I gave it a chance. She’s the perfect villain! So creepy!

Mark Normand: Soup to Nuts (TV Special 2023) (2023)

Great set as always from Kevin Hart. Love him, he’s such a q**ef! Mr. Normand is always consistently funny.

Five Bedrooms (2019)
Poor Things (2024)
ThinMan 3 points 3 months ago*.

It is definitely a representation where colour and sound need to be at a proper level to have any valid opinion. I still don’t care for Emma Stone, but love the director, so have hope!

augusts1 4 points 3 months ago.

I watched this yesterday & I loved it but the sound was all over the place. I had to keep adjusting the volume for the dialog & still didn’t catch it all. When the music came up it was much louder than the dialog, as well. Very irritating. But I am grateful for being able to see it in my comfy abode at least!

Peacemaker (2022)
augusts1 4 points 11 months ago*.

According to the internet a 2nd season for this show has been postponed according to James Gunn the director. The earliest could be 2024, the latest 2025. He is working on two other shows, Superman: Legacy & Waller starring Viola Davis reprising her role of Amanda Waller. Waller will actually continue where Peacemaker left off w/much of the cast of Peacemaker continuing their roles in Waller. So reading between the lines it seems what is being said is we’ll get a ‘2nd season’ kinda sorta of Peacemaker earlier just w/o Cena in the show Waller w/Viola as the main character. Very interesting. Here’s the link & I left a space after the https : https ://thedirect.com/article/peacemaker-season-2-release-date-james-gunn

Geoff Barrow of Portishead announced on his Twitter he did the soundtrack for this show. I look forward to hearing it & seeing the show.

Tom Segura: Sledgehammer (TV Special 2023) (2023)
augusts1 4 points 9 months ago.

Tom is pretty darn funny & at the top of his game here. Do I like other comedians better & think there are ‘better’ comics out there, yes, but comedy is subjective. I think Deon Cole, for one, is a better joke writer imo. Tom is really great at telling stories. Just his mannerisms, facial expressions & tone of voice are funny enough. But his brand of storytelling is interesting & entertaining, giving us a look into his personal life & musings on life in this crazy world. Tom’s humor/language is pretty colorful though & not for everyone, so proceed w/caution.

Ozark (2017) S4 E5
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I think Laura Linney’s character Wendy is probably the most evil one on the show & she’s so excellent at masking it behind her sweet smile lol. Then again I think Darlene is her equal but she’s much more upfront about it than Wendy. I think that last scene may have won Wendy the title of most evil though w/her watching Darlene suffering from an attack & waiting to call 911. Linney is just sublime in this role, she’s just an amazing actor.

Drag Race Down Under (2021)
OliverPRIME 1 points 2 years ago.

I love this show but I cant stand myself for supporting a scripted and rigged competition. Its obvious that Art Simone must paid its way back into the show ..coz it was eliminated on episode 2. So why the hell is it back for?????
And nobody has asked it why or mentioned its return….
Coz its all rigged and they are trying to get Art Simone to win ! duh !
It doesnt deserve it !

augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Drag performers go by their character’s pronoun of’she’ when in drag usually & often out of drag too. Using ‘it’ is not used unless a queen specifically states that is what they want to be referred to as their preferred pronoun, just so you know.

The Fall (2008)
augusts1 4 points 2 months ago.

An absolutely stunning visual masterpiece. Love everything about this movie, the acting, costumes, locations, etc., all stunning. If you’ve not ever seen this, do yourself a favor & watch it. I highly recommend this. Tarsem Singh put out some unfortunate stinkers after it but this will always remain his peak imo.

Everyone Else Burns (2023) S1 E1
alexisbits 3 points 1 year ago.

A funny and scathing depiction of some of the extreme religious types. Worth a watch.

augusts1 4 points 1 year ago.

This looks funnier than ‘The Righteous Gemstones’. TRG got pretty dark but has a top notch cast.

Carne (1992)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Rather shocking short debut film by Noe. But that’s to be expected w/his films. There’s a lot to unpack in this 40 minute run time. All his unique & signature filmmaking is present here to be developed further throughout his movies.

Noe’s films are not for the faint of heart & are often disturbing, so be forewarned. His stories are well worth the journey to the dark side of humanity though. Also, this story is further explored w/The Butcher in his follow up film I Stand Alone.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
alexisbits 3 points 1 year ago.

Happy 4th of July! This is one of those movies you just have to watch on the third or fourth!

augusts1 4 points 1 year ago.

It’s such a horror camp classic. It’s wonderfully over the top in very ‘80s style.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
Akrimay 1 points 2 years ago.

His career went down the drain. So sad he’s a good actor.

He has made a come back in the past few years if you really pay attention to what he’s been up to lately.

Our Flag Means Death (2022)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

A posh Englishman decides to take on helming a pirate ship replete w/pirates, what could go wrong? Well, everything for them but comedy gold for us. The 1st epi was pretty funny. Waititi is always good for a watch & a laugh. Good acting, writing & production design too. Hopefully it just gets even better from here but even if it stays at this level it will be entertaining.

Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Quite good & dark, dark, dark. I’m really not keen on sitcoms but this is a critique of the genre while simultaneously spoofing the genre. Lots of psychological intrigue w/the main character played by Annie Murphy who played the sister on Schitt’s Creek, another sitcom. This is miles apart from SC though.Looking forward to seeing how things progress as the show goes on.

Shining Vale (2022)
irdulili 5 points 1 year ago*.

Confirmed for a second season as of 10 May. Didn’t take long for them to make that decision.

augusts1 4 points 1 year ago.

Yea that’s great news. Love the tongue in cheek approach to the show. It gives lots of nods to it’s predecessors in horror movies which is fun too. I was never much of a fan of ‘Friends’ so I wasn’t sure what to expect from Courtney Cox since I hadn’t seen her in anything since that. Love Kinnear though so that’s what prompted me most to give it a try. Had a feeling if he was involved it had to be pretty decent. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised w/CC & the rest of the cast.

Pirate Radio (2009)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Great little indie film that more people need to see. I had forgotten about it till I saw a featured comment from HarryDurden here. I saw this a few years after it came out from a recommendation of a friend. The ensemble cast is amazing & the film gives you a look at a part of UK radio broadcasting history that I didn’t know about. It’s dramatic, comedic, thoughtful & suspenseful. Just a well made film that everyone will enjoy.

What We Do in the Shadows (2019) S3 E10
augusts1 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

OMG, a baby Colin Robinson? I definitely didn’t see that coming lol. I had a feeling he’d be back but not in baby form.

So sad this season is over, it was so great! I sure hope Guillermo gets to eventually be a vampire w/Nadja next season.

Trilogy of Terror (1975)
augusts1 5 points 2 years ago.

Classic horror movie. I’d heard about this for ages but had not ever checked it out. Karen Black is great in this. Sure it’s cheesy but it’s still a good watch because of that fact.

Poor Things (2024)
augusts1 5 points 3 months ago.

Love Yorgos Lanthimos’ movies. I’ve seen quite a few of them. ‘Dogtooth’ was my first & it’s a very strange film but I loved it. So much going on in it. He’s moved in more mainstream directions since ‘The Lobster’ which was excellent but not for everyone due to it’s oddness. ‘Killing Of A Sacred Deer’ was quite good, creepy & quirky & ‘The Favorite’ was excellent & quite a bit more accessible. Looking forward to seeing what’s in store w/this latest film once a good copy shows up.

I plan to, for sure, something good came out of this at least, thank you both for the recommendation =D

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

I agree w/bcreed08 & TheTruth about the original, it’s quite good. I discovered it after it aired so when I started watching it I was able to binge it. So sad it was cancelled but at least it had numerous seasons.

I’ve not watched this reboot but from all the negative reviews I see in these comments I think I’m better off not bothering hahaha.

Holeeeeey f**k! Here I thought The Byrds were in deep doo last epi but this one tops it. Great epi. I hope Julia Garner (Ruth) wins an Emmy for this epi. She is just phenomenal! The writers of this show keep outdoing themselves epi after epi. Looking forward to seeing what happens the remainder of this season.

Amélie (2001)
Birdsforme 4 points 2 years ago.

Also saw it on the big screen with family and friends. I found it delightful. We all went out and bought the soundtrack and played it over for many years.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Jeunet’s films are so filled w/weird & wonderful characters & things. Amelie is light & whimsical for him since most of his movies tend to have darker themes visually & thematically & filled w/lots of dark humor which I love. His 1st film ‘Delicatessen’ is great & fits that bill to a T.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
augusts1 3 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Such a beautiful epic film. A love story for the ages. Both Tilda & Idris have such a wonderful chemistry & since their conversations make up the majority of the film there needed to be great chemistry to carry the movie. Just a fascinating storyline & every aspect is well done. I do have an issue with the fact that the djinn needs to go away due to the technological noises that bring him pain. Why did she not sell her house & move to an area where the noise wasn’t an issue for him. Seemed odd to me. Still a fantastic movie although due to it being dialogue heavy it might not have enough action for some people & be slowly paced. Highly recommended though
.

Let the Wrong One In (2023)
alexisbits 5 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Pretty funny. You’ve got the usual tropes (Transylvania, cute older guy who kills vampires, sunlight and garlic). But there’s so much more. The brother/son who prioritized his family, those nasty garlic fries, the vampire bride who wore crosses, The Bunny (if you know, you know). Club Crypt looks like a fun place, vampires meet Hellraiser meet “Night of the Demons”.

augusts1 3 points 1 year ago.

I’ll put this on my list. Have you seen the vampire movie ‘Let The Right One in’? Totally serious & different from this but so good. The title of this made me think of it. There’s also a US remake called ‘Let Me In’ that’s good too but a bit different vibe to it than the creepy original.

Cool, I’m looking forward to it. The site that I originally watched this on when it was first out only had dubbing which was horrid so I stopped watching it about half way through as much as I loved it. Thank goddess Primewire has subs available!

Very Bad Things (1998)
augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Wow, this is what I’d call the epitome of a dark comedy. Found myself laughing at the over the top but great performances by the stellar ensemble cast & then sombered by the dark circumstances of the plot. Definitely not a movie that everyone will get or appreciate though due to it’s very dark humor. It’s very twisted. Worth a watch if you like dark comedies.
