Belles-Lettres is about the special phenomenon where convicted murderers receive love letters from strangers. Those who write these letters have never met the inmates. And the disturbing fact about this phenomenon is that the women who write don’t know anything about the prisoner, other than what they are sentenced for. They don’t know who he is or how he is as a human being. The protagonist of the film, Damir, is in jail for murder. He doesn’t go for all the romantic thoughts and loving words in these letters. He hates the letters and he hates these crazy women. But he sees that the prison psychologist, Espen, has a need for love. Espen is unable to get rid of Damir’s extreme opinions. He takes them home, into his private life, where he discusses them with his wife; why do women want evil men? The question provokes his wife and they end up in a heated discussion.
