It is always 9 o’clock somewhere on earth. Vancouver’s iconic nine o’clock gun fires everyday and is a popular observation ritual for visitors and city dwellers. It can only be experienced as a single event in the narrative of the present but as a representation in ‘From Time to Time’ we see nine days simultaneously, which exposes the ephemeral and paradoxical way we experience time and its apparent connection to space. If we can be omnipotent and fluid in space we can find every time existing at the same time but in the film we are fixed in space, observing the cannon, but finding nine unique yet the same times. So just what time is it at the North Pole. |
