Details:

Season one of BREAKTHROUGH, was hailed by critics as “ambitious,” “innovative,” “inspiring” and “fascinating.” Season two of the critically acclaimed series from National Geographic, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment, once again shines a light on groundbreaking advancements that will shape our future. The episode, ATTACK OF THE KILLER T-CELLS, follows the radical work of doctors and researchers who have pioneered breakthrough therapies to stop our bodies from destroying themselves. As if transplanted from science fiction, one such therapy harnesses HIV — one of the most deadly viruses known to humans — in order to reprogram human immune systems to hunt and kill cancer within the body. By hijacking an inactive HIV infection, it can deliver new genetic properties into a patient’s own T-Cells. These supercharged T-Cells aggressively target cancer cells, with often amazing results. Director Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home At Night, Bad Batch) follows two approaches in rapid development. The research of Dr. Carl June at the University of Pennsylvania enables clinicians to modify a patient’s own T-Cells. Meanwhile in France, Dr. Andre Choulika of Cellectis Pharmaceuticals is developing an off-the-shelf, universal T-Cell therapy that could lead to an affordable treatment. It is a parallel race facing nearly monumental obstacles, but moving toward one common goal: the most significant scientific revolution in medical history.
