Details:

San Francisco Symphony at 100 details the colorful, century-long history of one of America’s great orchestras. Founded just five years after San Francisco’s great earthquake of 1906, the Symphony evolved from a hometown band into an orchestra of world-wide acclaim. The hour-long documentary features historical photos, film and video accompanied by a musical score by Mahler, Stravinsky, Copland, Adams, and Metallica — among others. Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas leads an all-star cast of music luminaries who tell the story of the Symphony’s rise from San Francisco’s ashes. Narrated by novelist Amy Tan, other story-tellers include Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh, conductors Edo de Waart and Herbert Blomstedt, the Symphony’s executive director Brent Assink, and composer John Adams.
