Donald Peach is a man with only two loves: his career as a high security level helicopter engineer and his hobby of flying radio control model airplanes. When a government shutdown occurs at his place of employment, Donald is forced to spend time with the people he knows least about - his family. Meanwhile, Donald’s son, Artie, a geeky 15 year old, is arrested on the first night of summer vacation, for disorderly conduct. Donald is soon forced by his mild-mannered wife, Susan, to spend his furlough with his son, so the two can build a relationship and get to know one another. Donald, who already had planned on taking a solo road trip from Arizona to Wisconsin for the summer - is now headed with his dolt son, to Baron, Wisconsin, where they plan on competing together in the annual Baron Model Airplane Air Show and Shootout. Armed with a disaster of a radio control airplane named The Electric Blue, Donald and Artie must set aside their differences, so they can restore and compete with their second-rate model plane in the big event. While Artie is having the time of his life, bonding with the eccentric hermit The Baron (who runs the event), Donald has big problems on his plate - a jealous fellow pilot, whose sexy wife is enamored with Donald - and the fact that he is slowly losing out on bonding with Artie, as he becomes more consumed with a desire to win the air show, rather than to spend time with his estranged son. Donald now has come to a crossroads, learning that not only that family comes first - but also that he and his son may not be such strangers after all, as they have a lot more in common than they think - But, is it too late for him to become the father that Artie needs in his life?
