MY SECRET RECORD: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Biz traces the creative process and aggressive marketing campaign of Rob Thomass Billboard history making solo debut, Something to Be. Featuring a cast of superstars and CEOs, we are given extraordinary access into the world that manufactures rock stars and hits for mass consumption. Who are these marketing gurus responsible for creating the perception that feeds the late night talk shows, Best Buys and Targets of the world? And how does a multi-platinum artist cope in todays climate of corporate sponsored music, walking the line between preserving his integrity and selling-out? Shot during the making of Rob Thomass solo debut, Something to Be - this intimate music documentary follows the songwriter through one of the busiest and most challenging times of his life. He finds himself pulled in all directions from writing and recording his own album and collaborating with other artists, to countless press junkets, red carpet arrivals, music videos and ad campaigns. He struggles to find balance musically while satisfying the expectations and commercial demands of his new regime at Atlantic Records. Yet Robs biggest challenge was his most personal: supporting his wife through an ongoing battle with an auto-immune disease a lot of which made its way onto the record. MY SECRET RECORD was shot entirely cinema verité style and culled from over 350 hours of footage spanning a two-year period. The film features an incredible cast of musicians including: Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Carlos Santana, Robert Randolph, Omar Hakim, Wendy Melvoin, Jeff Trott, Gerald Heyward, Mike Elizondo and industry heavy weights.
