To be a top broker in Manhattan is the summit of power and success, so believes Esmeralda Soares, a grand, disturbingly confident, acerbic-tongued broker who, in order to stay on top, moves into an available apartment that she represents, obviously at no cost. And from a roommate page, she finds one; offering a deal that no one can refuse: two hundred dollars a month for an apartment in Manhattan. The mysterious Shana Tova replies to what seems like a gift from heaven. Upon meeting, she discovers the place comes unfurnished and she will have to sleep in the same bed as Esmeralda. Under some unknown pressure and in need to make a decision, Shana accepts, and then learns that there are certain rules that need to be observed. Esmeralda’s sham’s only glitch is the vigilant and relentless building super, Super Dupré, whose sphere includes wandering outside the front of the building, inside the hallway, in front of any apartment door and hanging around on the fire escape and peeking through the windows, with his trusty mop always by his side. As a stream of potential renters flow by Esmeralda’s domain, she enjoys her control, and could as quickly discard an application as consider one a potential renter. With increasing awareness of super Super’s suspicions, Esmeralda may have to move faster and find a way out. However, she doesn’t care, or is in anyway concerned about the consequences of her actions; because in the end: she is a Top Broker.
