Roses have often led one to the path of love, but sometimes they take a roundabout course. Certain it is that few people have sought a thief and found a sweetheart by the aid of roses. But that is what Jim Hazleton, a man of wealth and position, does. He makes a specialty of raising roses, and all through the spacious mansion in which he resides, everywhere, are roses and peace, until he suddenly notices that the flowers have become less in number daily, and he learns from his foreman that they are being stolen. In order to catch the thief he disguises himself as a gardener and works on his own estate. One day, just as the last shadow of twilight are becoming night, he detects someone among the rose bushes, and after watching intently sees the form of a young girl plucking the flowers. She turns her face to him and in the dim light he is struck with the charm and beauty of her. He approaches her, and taken aback, she starts forward, but after a word of encouragement from him, she draws near. She tells him that she did not realize the value of the roses and has been giving them to the poor and sick. She points out to him that there are thorns as well as roses in the world, and he is so struck with her charitable disposition that he falls in love with her, and thereafter there are fewer roses in the home, but more peace and much love. |
