Details:

At the end of 1938, Jean Renoir, 42 years old, got involved in a contemporary transposition of De Musset’s play Les caprices de Mariane, soon entitled The Rule of the Game. This tale, where bitterness overtakes irony, must also been considered as the one and only opportunity to see the fulfillment of a voluble, seducing and crafty actor : Jean Renoir. The first public projections are a disaster. Producer of the film, Renoir is ready to do any thing to curb damage. He shortens the film. Within 5 days, the film shifts from 115 to 85 minutes. The French government punish it with an export banning. Renoir absolutely broke, put his film aside. The full-length version of The Rule of the Game will be finally restored in 1958 by two young passionate movie’s buffs, Jean Gaborit & Jacques Marechal. Interviews with Paulette Dubost, actress in The Rule of the Game, and Jacques Marechal, producer of the restored version. Many clips from The Rule of the Game (1936).
