A single-camera comedy series about Riley Veatch, a sarcastic, street-smart teen runaway whose search for her birth mother brings her to the doorstep of her aunt in a small Northern California town. Her uptight Aunt Opal is a lonely high school administrator. Underneath Opal's cold exterior is a vulnerable woman who benefits from Riley's influence as these two semi-lost souls forge a bond based on their needs for love and family -- although neither one is likely to admit it. Riley narrates the series. Other characters include Gossett High School's assistant principal Mitch Levitt, the object of Opal's unrequited affection; A.J. Swartz, the clueless office assistant; and Lisa Overbeck, a sweet, idealistic teacher at Gossett High.

The other members of the team are Kate Russell, the scholar of the group, with a vast knowledge of mythology and archetypes from many religions and Vincent Konefke is the technical guy who ran the machines but never dreamwalked himself. Steve Turner is the other sleepwalker.

The principal cast was rounded out with newcomer Mark Feuerstein as aspiring writer Danny, Terry's brother and roommate; and veteran Jonathan Banks, owner of the bar/restaurant Clockworks, over which the others live and who is enamored of Gwen the first time he lays eyes on her.

The central plot device is the narration, provided by 14-year-old Dorothy Jane Torkelson, as she sits in the window-seat of her upstairs bedroom and talks to her confidante, the Man in the Moon, usually at the opening and closing of each episode. Unlike many television comedies, situations in this show are secondary to the philosophy of life developed by Dorothy Jane, a sensitive reader of poetry; Millicent, a very wise, tolerant mother who, despite her flexibility and humility, has very high standards for how her children view life and treat other people; and the boarder they take in to help pay the bills, Wesley Hodges, whose wisdom in knowing when to get involved in Torkelson family matters -- and when to "butt out" -- gives the show a depth and tenderness usually found only in well-written independent films and shorts.
