Scout Old Shatterhand suspects that Comanches are being paid in alcohol by renegade Whites to attack the settlers and frame the Apaches for these attacks. While Karl-Oskar goes through the process of setting up their homestead, eighteen year old Robert already has bigger dreams of striking it big in the California gold rush, something he is reluctant to tell Karl-Oskar until he is ready to leave if only having been under Karl-Oskar's guardianship and Karl-Oskar perhaps thinking him too young, impulsive and thus foolish. His plan is to go with his best friend Arvid, the two of them who would take the steamship down the river to St. Louis, from where they would walk the rest of the way. Also reluctant to say anything is Kristina, who can't help believe they made a mistake in leaving Sweden and their known life. Karl-Oskar and Kristina go through a series of highs and lows in their new life, some related specifically to being in Minnesota at this point in time, such as dealing with Indians and the imminent Civil War, and not knowing the language, and some related to their general life regardless of location, including Kristina's feeling of her role in the family. Robert's California tale is also told, he who returns back to Minnesota with a bagful of money four years after leaving, but who looks a little worse for wear.

A gunfighter called "El Rojo" arrives in Gold Hill to avenge his massacred family.

On her 21st birthday, settler Mac Haller's daughter Apanatschi receives her father's secret gold mine as a gift. Mac Haller was married to an Apache woman and Apanatschi is half-breed. She also has a little brother Happy who is saved by Winnetou from a dangerous fall off a mountain peak, when Happy tries to collect an eagle's feather from an eagle's aerie. On the day of the birthday party, Mac Haller, his daughter Apanatschi , his young son Happy and Winnetou, who is a family friend, visit the location of the secret gold mine and Apanatschi formally receives the mine from her father. At Apanatschi's b-day party at the Mac Haller farm, invited are Jeff Brown who is Apanatschi's boyfriend and two neighboring prospectors, Pinky and Sloan. At the party, the two prospectors, learn of the existence of the gold mine, from little Happy, who doesn't yet grasp the concept of gold nuggets. For him they are just rocks and pebbles. After learning of the mine, the two prospectors plan to force Mac Haller to reveal the exact location of the mine. When they are told to leave, the prospectors oblige but secretly plan to ambush Mac Haller or kidnap Apanatschi in order to extract from them the mine's location. Apanatschi is thus forced to seek Winnetou's help. Unfortunately, the prospectors themselves are in trouble when Curly-Bill's gang finds out about the whole scheme and wants a share of the loot.

A group of outlaws take over a small frontier town and plan to stay awhile. A gunslinger arrives and decides to help the citizens take their community back, but the gang refuses to give up easily.

'The Oilprince' is an unscrupulous businessman. He looks forward to a lucrative deal with the "Western Arizona Bank'. He sells the bank oil wells at Shelly Lake that do actually not exist. The Oilprince learns that the colonists would like to settle at Shelly Lake. So The Oilprince exchanges the scout of the settlers by one of his minions to give them another route. But soon The Oilprince has to recognize that he has not counted on Winnetou, the righteous leader of the Apaches, and his blood brother Old Surehand.

Instead of fighting over newly gained money from a coach-robbery, two gangster-brothers (El Bedoja and Chiuchi) decide to rob a bank together. But Martinez, a gangster-coward, is successfully questioned by Nigros (a clad-in-black gangster-killer who collects the money) and Rocco (a righteous ex-sheriff who doesn't and shows off even more skill in using his pistol) on their plans. After having robbed the bank and needlessly shot several town-inhabitants, the gangsters hide out in a mine, taking beautiful Maruja with them as hostage. Although Rocco and Nigros follow different paths (Nigros the money, Rocco justice), they unite to get the money. They hire Esplotion for the explosives. Because Rocco is out of ammunition, he impales one of the gangsters with a wooden stake. A second showdown plays in a barn.

The ruthless and cruel Captain Ramirez hunts down and kills revolutionaries in his search for The Saint, the righteous leader of the Mexican insurrection against the Federales.

A lone rider comes across a dying soldier, the victim of an Indian attack, who gives him a paper authorizing the payment of $150,000 to the U.S. Army. Reverend Miller arrives in Tucson where he wants to build a church but on the very day of his arrival a gang carries out a raid on the bank and the people of Tucson, who are suspicious of the new reverend because he carries a gun, immediately blame him for the robbery.
