Humanity has achieved great heights. We have landed on the moon, placed a powerful computer in our pockets, cured numerous diseases and brought the world the most evil and deranged serial killers. There are very few that stand out quite as much as H. H. Holmes and his Murder Hotel. In fact, his notoriety is so great that Hollywood embarked on a blockbuster about him and now it is even claimed that Britain's most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper, was none other than H. H. Holmes himself. He presided over the "castle". A devilish architectural creation in downtown Chicago made specifically to murder people. Trap doors, chutes, false doors, hidden passageways and spy holes made the Murder Castle the infamous building of its age. Many victims were beaten to death; some were strangled, and others gassed. And yet others were tortured on racks before they lost their lives. When he was finally caught, he confessed to twenty-seven murders, although it is believed by many that he murdered over 200. But it is not the number of deaths that is the cause of his devilish fame; it is in fact the methods he used. This is the tale of the evil dark lord of the Murder Castle - guts and all.

Movie: David & Me ( 2014 )
A documentary about two unlikely friends - a convicted murderer and a young, Canadian filmmaker. David McCallum is 29 years into a life sentence. Despite a mountain of evidence that should exonerate David, or at least grant him a new trial, filmmaker Ray Klonsky and a pro-bono team are stymied by a justice system that is not designed to free the wrongly convicted. When news of a DNA match that fingers a new suspect surfaces, the team thinks justice will finally be served. But they quickly learn their fight has only just begun. "I've thought about it and I could not see myself standing in front of anyone and admitting guilt in this crime, and if it takes me dying in prison, I will do that. I'd rather die in prison. And that's the truth." -David McCallum You've probably never heard of David McCallum - his case has not garnered the attention of Mumia Abu-Jamal or David Milgaard in Canada - but for a quarter century, in relative obscurity, he has been tirelessly fighting to overturn his 1985 conviction for murder. When Ray Klonsky, a troubled Toronto teenager, began a letter correspondence with David McCallum, both of their lives changed forever. David helped Ray straighten out and Ray, in turn, has sustained David with hope during imprisonment in a New York State penitentiary. But what started as a simple friendship became a fight for justice with high-powered lawyers, world-renowned experts - including Rubin 'The Hurricane' Carter - and concerned citizens coming together to fight for David's innocence and freedom. After befriending David, Ray set out to make a documentary about David's story, chronicling the ongoing efforts to fight his conviction. Now, nearly 10 years later, Klonsky and the team makes one final push for justice to be served. Cameras follow Ray every step of the way as they hit the streets in search of that one piece of evidence or witness testimony that could get the case back into court and ultimately free David. Reasonable Doubt is not just another wrongful conviction documentary; it is the real story of how a convicted murderer and a young Canadian filmmaker changed both of their lives forever.

Movie: How Police Missed the Grindr Killer ( 2017 )
The story of how police repeatedly allowed a serial murderer to slip through their fingers. Stephen Port date-raped and murdered four young gay men in East London within fifteen months and dumped all four bodies within a few hundred metres of each other. Yet Barking and Dagenham police failed to link the deaths, until weeks after the fourth one. The film tells the story through eyes of the families of Port's victims, unpicking how the police failed to properly investigate each of the deaths in turn. The police's assumptions that these young gay men had died from self-inflicted overdoses of chem-sex drugs allowed Port to continue raping and killing innocent young men. The film unravels Port's sinister character and modus operandi. Port was motivated by a desire to satisfy his lust for abusive drug fuelled sexual encounters. He found all his victims through gay dating and social media sites, using multiple online profiles. Barking and Dagenham police's failings have led to huge anger amongst the families of Port's victims. Some have accused the police of institutional homophobia, and asked if officers would have investigated more thoroughly, had four young women turned up dead within such a small radius. The Met police have referred themselves to the Independent Police Complaints Commission over their handling of the case and will not comment on specific allegations until the IPCC investigation is complete.
