Movie: Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami ( 2018 )
Larger than life, wild, scary and androgynous - Grace Jones plays all these parts. Yet here we also discover her as a lover, daughter, mother, sister and even grandmother, as she submits herself to our gaze and allows us to understand what constitutes her mask. The stage is where her most extreme embodiments are realised and her theatrical imagination lets loose: this is where the musical of her life is played out. The film includes Grace's unique performances singing iconic hits such as Slave To The Rhythm, Pull Up To The Bumper, as well as the more recent autobiographical tracks Williams' Bloods and Hurricane. These personal songs also link to Grace's family life, as the film takes us on a holiday road trip across Jamaica, where her family roots and the story of her traumatic childhood are uncovered. In Jamaican patois, 'Bloodlight' is the red light that illuminates when an artist is recording and 'Bami' means bread, the substance of daily life. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami weaves together the layers of Grace Jones' public and private life, as she moves effortlessly between different facets: she is gypsy, artist and partying hedonist, warm and funny but also a fierce and tenacious businesswoman. The performance continues to move thematically though the film, with Love Is The Drug acting like an aria, bringing the film to its final and most touching scenes. This is a Grace we have not seen before, someone who reminds us of what it is to dare to be truly alive.

Movie: Heart Live from Caesars Colosseum ( 2012 )
The history behind this recording began in 2012, which was a year of major achievements for Heart. In addition to Ann and Nancy's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and news that they had been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the year was filed with musical accomplishments. Ann and Nancy Wilson combed their archives for a definitive four CD box set release in the early part of the year, and in the fall of 2012, released their "Fanatic” album to strong critical and fan acclaim. To support the release of "Fanatic,” the band embarked upon a major North American headline tour, which ended with a magnificent performance at Caesars Colosseum in Windsor, Ontario, which was filmed by AXS-TV. Heart has long been associated with Canada having broken out in Vancouver in 1976 with the release of "Dreamboat Annie” and their return to Canada for the "Fanatic” tour was greeted with the kind of enthusiasm the Canadians save for their own. Ben Mink, who produced the "Fanatic” CD and is another great musical Canadian musician, joined Ann and Nancy on stage at Windsor, playing fiddle and leading a string ensemble. In addition to songs from the "Fanatic” album which were performed for the first time for the television viewing audience, "Fanatic Live From Caesars Colosseum” also showcases many of Heart's classic hits including "Barracuda,” "Crazy on You,” "These Dreams,” "Alone,” "What About Love,” and many more. Over the group's four-decade history, Heart had different lineups, with the constant center of the group since 1974 being sisters lead singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson. To date, Heart has sold over 30 million records worldwide, including over 22 million in album sales in the U.S. The group was ranked number 57 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". With Top 10 albums on the Billboard Album Chart in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s, Heart is among the most commercially enduring Rock bands in his

Movie: The Pretenders: Live in London ( 2010 )
"Live In London" is a live performance masterpiece that captures The Pretenders at the top of their game. If you saw them live on their 2009 tour, you'll know what I'm talking about. You owe it to yourself to get this program as a reminder of just how amazing this band is on the road. "Live In London" succeeds where The Pretenders' studio albums fail. They are one of those rare bands that truly does sound better when they're playing in front of an audience -- an intimate small theater crowd here. With all due respect to original guitarist James Honeyman Scott and bassist Pete Farndon, The Pretenders latest lineup is the best Chrissie Hynde has ever staged. With the steady pounding of original drummer Martin Chambers, newcomers James Walbourne on guitar, Nick Wilkinson on bass and Eric Heywood on pedal steel rock from start to finish, revitalizing Pretenders' classics like "Message of Love" and "Kid," while adding new ones like "Boots of Chinese Plastic" to the playlist. You'll be blown away by Walbourne's electrifying guitar work. It starts with the first licks of the opener "Chinese Plastic," scorches through "Rosalee," and climaxes with the show-stopper "Precious." Walbourne delivers pure, unadulterated, raw, rip-snorting rock 'n' roll. His on-stage chemistry with Hynde is self-evident. As per usual, Hynde's vocals are impeccable, showing great range, dynamics and emotion, equally adept at punk rockers like "The Wait" and ballads like "I'll Stand By You." This woman has earned the right to work the stage with the swagger of a rock star. She is it. The direction and camera work throughout "Live In London" give the viewer the perspective of being on stage with The Pretenders. Tight crops interspersed with effective wide angles make one feel like he can count the streaks of mascara multiplying on Hynde's face and see the beads of sweat building on Chambers' brow as the night rocks on.

Movie: The Black Keys Live at the Crystal Ballroom ( 2008 )
The Black Keys' new concert DVD, Live at the Crystal Ballroom, reflects the no-frills genius of the drums-and-guitar duo's studio sound: It's a refreshingly straightforward video document of their April 4, 2008 sold-out gig at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom, featuring seventeen songs culled from all five of the pair's albums. Director Lance Bangs - who has made videos for the Arcade Fire, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth as well as directing R.E.M.'s Road Movie - keeps his small camera crew focused on the stage, getting up close and sweaty with guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Occasionally, he'll pull back to acknowledge the head-bobbing crowd pressed close to the stage, their hands reaching out to Auerbach. There are no visual pyrotechnics, no elaborate editing, no backstage cutaways, yet the show is riveting from start to finish and the feel of the music in that room is nothing less than triumphant.
