Description:

The British Empire was still powerful at this time. Arts and crafts flourished. The main industries were coal, iron, steel, cotton and wool. Railways were being built all over the world by the British. Electricity became an easily available commodity during the Edwardian times. King Edward VII’s reign was also associated with La Belle Epoque, an epoch of beautiful clothes and the peak of luxury living for a select few. Peace and prosperity came to an end when the First World War broke out.

Kate and Julia's nephew Gabriel and his wife Gretta hold integral roles for the evening, Gabriel, who, in addition to being Freddy Malins' caregiver if he gets too drunk as is often the case, is to carve the dinner goose and provide the evening's main toast, while Gretta is to present the pudding. With the added unexpected excitement provided by Irish nationalist Molly Ivors for Gabriel, the party basically goes according to script. As most of the guests have departed and just before Gabriel and Gretta are to do the same - this year they staying in a downtown hotel instead of making the long trek to their suburban home and children - something happens to makes Gretta enter into a moment of deep reflection. Gretta confessing the cause and the item of reflection later at the hotel to Gabriel leads to Gabriel, as a culmination of the evening's sum total of events, also entering into reflection, about his and Gretta's marriage, and about life and death in general.

Szlimakowska, captivated by the girl's beauty and refinement, hires her to work in her establishment and names her Yvette. Yvette, having nowhere to go, looks for accommodation with Szczerb, an independence activist and friend of her fiancé, Józef, whom she has not seen since her arrest. Yvette decides to earn money to find her fiancé. Meanwhile, at Szczerba's, he meets Marcel, a PPS courier who was delivering the bomb and was injured during the explosion. The same events are seen from a different perspective by Nastazja Jurina, a Russian woman from St. Petersburg, a policeman's wife, lost in a strange Warsaw and in an arranged marriage after a sex scandal. The church is her only place of escape from her husband, who has been dreaming of a promotion and a child for a long time without success. The head of the Warsaw Okhrana, Margrafski, blames Jurin (Nastazja's husband) for another bomb explosion in his district, which again rules out his chances for promotion. Szlimakowska dreams of selling the brothel and leaving Warsaw forever for Biarritz, but the matter is difficult because the place belongs to her husband, who abandoned Franciszka many years ago. The woman meets with attorney Piotrowski, who represents a merchant who is ready to buy Szlimakowska's shrine despite the complicated legal status. It's the Edwardian era. The Honeychurches - Marian Honeychurch and her two just of age children Lucy Honeychurch and Freddy Honeychurch - are a carefree and fun-loving family that live in the country town of Summer Street, Surrey. Regardless, Lucy is a proper young woman. Some can tell by the way she plays Beethoven on the piano that there is a seething passion underneath her proper demeanor. She and her older cousin, her chaperon Charlotte Barlett, who is officious in a slyly undermining way, travel to Florence, Italy for a week-long respite. The Pensione Bertolini where they are staying is popular among British tourists. Among the disparate group of other British guests at the pensione are a Mr. Emerson, who Charlotte considers vulgar because of his forwardness, and his son, the bright but brooding George Emerson. As their stay progresses, George feels that Italian life is opening his eyes to what is important in life, and he feels the same is happening to Lucy. On a group outing, an incident occurs which both Charlotte and Lucy consider improper, which leads to the two leaving Italy early and heading back to England. Shortly thereafter, Lucy gets engaged to the upper crust and passionless Cecil Vyse. And Mr. Emerson moves to Summer Street, with George visiting on the weekends. As George befriends the Honeychurches, Lucy begins to tell a series of lies, mostly to herself, about what and who she really wants for and in her life.
