On Christmas Eve, an old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the spirit of his former partner, Jacob Marley. The deceased partner was in his lifetime as mean and miserly as Scrooge is now and he warns him to change his ways or face the consequences in the afterlife. Scrooge dismisses the apparition but the first of the three ghosts, the Ghost of Christmas Past, visits as promised. Scrooge sees those events in his past life, both happy and sad, that forged his character. The second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, shows him how many currently celebrate Christmas. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him how he will be remembered once he is gone. To his delight, the spirits complete their visits in one night giving him the opportunity to mend his ways.

A visit from the spirit of Christmas Past (Charles Hawtrey) warns him that he will be shown the error of his ways by visits from the Spirits of Christmas present (Barbara Windsor) and future (Bernard Bresslaw) Becoming generous and helpful Scrooge finances Dr Frank N Stein ( Terry Scott) for his experiments. Scrooge is then thrown into the world of pantomime and meets poor Cinderella (Barbara Windsor) at the beck and call of her ugly sisters(Peter Butterworth and Terry Scott) With some camp help from Buttons (Charles Hawtrey) and the Fairy Godmother (Frankie Howerd) Scrooge resolves to embrace the spirit of Christmas. Unfortunately he lavishes affection on a passer-by (Hattie Jacques) and is arrested by a policeman ( Bernard Bresslaw) .

Worried that their children have become obsessed with television shows from Earth which extol the virtues of Santa Claus, Martians begin an expedition to Earth to kidnap the one and only Santa Claus. While on Earth, they kidnap two lively children that lead the group of Martians to the North Pole and Santa Claus. The Martians then take Santa Claus and the two children back to Mars with them. Voldar, a particularly grumpy Martian, attempts to do away with the children and Santa Claus before they get to Mars, but their leader Lord Kimar stops him. When they arrive on Mars, Santa Claus, with the help of the two Earth children and a rather simple-minded Martian lackey, overcomes the Martians by bringing fun, happiness and Christmas cheer to the children of Mars.
