The submarine USS Thunderfish successfully completes a secret mission to rescue a group of orphans on a remote Pacific island. On the way back to Honolulu they encounter a Japanese aircraft carrier but the torpedoes they fire explode about halfway to the target, a recurring problem that has plagued the submarine fleet for some time. The Thunderfish's XO, Duke Gifford runs into his ex-wife and Navy nurse Mary Stuart at the hospital. There's still a spark between them but the boat is sent out on another mission before anything is resolved. When Gifford's good friend and captain, Pop Perry, is killed Gifford believe it's his fault. A inquiry clears him and after he and his men solve the problem of the misfiring torpedoes, they set out to sea.

As country after country falls to the Nazis, O'Toole follows O'Hara across Europe. At first he is after a story, but he gradually falls in love with her. When she learns that her husband is indeed a Nazi, O'Hara fakes her death and runs off with O'Toole. In Paris, she is recruited to spy for the allies; he uses a radio broadcast to make Von Luber and the Nazis look like fools.

At the onset of the Civil War, seven young Texans decide to join General Hood's Texas regiment in Richmond. During their long horseback voyage from Texas to Virginia, the seven young men will witness first-hand the Southern prejudice and snobbery. They also will witness the lynching of runaway black slaves. Filled with dreams of war glory, they will nevertheless push ahead toward their destination. Their trek eastward is eventful and fraught with dangers, as the Texans will occasionally get into trouble with the townsfolk from various towns. Although they do eventually join the Confederate forces, it will happen in Shiloh, Tennessee not in Richmond, Virginia as planned. After becoming soldiers, they realize that war is not what they expected or dreamed about. The army and the war are not at all compatible with the core human values of ordinary Texans. The battle of Shiloh is the epitaph of this story.

Kathie Aumont has just arrived in the big city to work at a defense plant. When the promised accommodation with her friend Sally falls through, Kathie is forced to find somewhere else to live in the city where there is a virtually zero vacancy. She is able to finagle renting the apartment of Johnny Moore, who is just heading off into the marines. What Johnny forgets to tell her before he leaves is that he has given his apartment key to many of his enlisted friends for them to be able to use the apartment whenever they are in town. As such, Kathie never knows who she's going to find in the apartment. Complications ensue when Kathie falls for two of them, and they with her. One of them is Mike O'Brien, a navy sailor and notorious womanizer. The other is Johnny himself, Kathie and he who had a moment before he left and who comes home unexpectedly on a twenty-four hour pass. It gets even more complicated when one of the apartment keys gets into the wrong hands. All these complications are fueled by a gremlin, who vowed to Kathie that he would oversee her seven weeks of bad luck for spilling some salt.

Corporals Ryker and Hodge are in charge of the men. After executing a search and destroy mission in an abandoned and booby-trapped South Korean village, the platoon heads toward rice fields, but finds itself surrounded by Chinese enemy troops. When sending for help becomes no option, Lieutenant Butler decides to closer investigate the isolated South Korean temple perched atop a steep hill. The temple seems to be a good defensible position for the platoon, but it's located at the top of the steep hill with only a sheer cliff to its rear.

"Gramp" appears before Lew and takes him in hand and together, they revisit the past: Lew's childhood; "Gramp" as a Civil War veteran; Lew's courtship of Agnes; the birth of "Rusty"; Lew as a WWI soldier; Rusty's boyhood days and into his attempt to decide between Lenore Prentiss and Gretchen Barry, and how Lenore becomes his girl just before he joins the Navy. This excursion into the past takes away Lew's bitterness and he now sees what America means.

In 1942, the Germans are pushing the British further back toward Cairo. Field Marshal Rommel intends to destroy the British 8th Army and take Cairo. However, the British are far from defeated and they beefed up Cairo's defenses. Taking Cairo would be a difficult task for the Germans if they cannot obtain reliable information regarding the British defenses and the British 8th Army's remaining strength. Therefore, Rommel decides to send his best two spies, disguised as civilians into British-occupied Cairo to gather intelligence. This information would then be sent by a wireless radio transmitter to a secret German relay station in the desert and ultimately end-up at Rommel's headquarters. Both German spies are speaking fluent English. One is half-German, half-Arab and grew-up in Cairo, the other choosing to pass himself as an American. They start in a five-vehicle convoy of captured British vehicles and cross the desert to a location nearby the British lines from where the two German spies, carrying forged identity papers and a suitcase of fake British currency, continue their trip on foot. However, their trip is photographed from the air by a British spotter plane. The pictures are sent to Capt. Robertson of the Intelligence Service who tries to guess what the disguised German convoy is up to. Things will become more entangled in Cairo, due to a femme-fatale, a belly dancer, two Jewish Zionists fighting for a Palestine free of British-rule, a loose-lips drunken British Major infatuated with the belly dancer and a few murderous Nazi collaborators. Capt. Robertson has to navigate his way around all these characters and unmask the two German spies sent by Rommel before the upcoming German general offensive.

So, Mallory and Miller being the only ones who can positively identify him are sent along with a unit called Force 10, which is led by Colonel Barnsby, who objects to their presence. It seems that Force 10 has a mission of their own which Mallory and Miller know nothing about. When their plane is shot and most of the team is killed, they mistakenly believe that some of the locals they meet are Partisans but in reality are German Allies, so they are taken prisoner, and have to convince the German commander that they are not spies or else they will be killed.
