Here, an old Egyptian is asked by his granddaughter about those mysteries of which we all heard in one way or the other. The action takes us to Howard Carter, who, after years and years of searching, finally found King Tutankhamen's (Tut-ench-Amun) grave in 1922. This was a major event in archaeology, as this grave was never robbed and therefore in the same condition as it was left (est.) 1339 B.C. We also get to see the Nile's wells and other historic landmarks that make Egypt an important part of world history.

Movie: My Private War ( 1990 )
Late in the 1980s, two documentary film makers found six German men, all in their 60s and 70s, who had been soldiers in the German invasion of the USSR in 1942. Each carried an 8mm camera into battle and they still had their film. "Mein Kreig" alternates between interviews with these older men, now apologetic, philosophical, or defiant about their participation, and the footage they shot. It's chronological: basic training, the train trip East, roof-top vistas of war-torn Warsaw, peasants in Belarus, the downing with carbine volleys of a Russian plane, winter, a holiday at the Black Sea, mud, impassable roads, death, destruction and retreat. "Home, that was the front," one says.

Movie: Made in Auschwitz: The Untold Story of Block 10 ( 2019 )
This chilling documentary uses intimate survivor testimonies, archival footage and legal records to tell the story of the over 400 young women who underwent medical experimentation in Auschwitz under Carl Clauberg, an enterprising, sadistic gynecologist. Clauberg, who had already made a name for himself as a research scientist who volunteered his services to Heinrich Himmler of the SS to both help eradicate future generations of Jews and to avail himself of a pool of captive research subjects. These experiments, which sterilized many of the women, was also what spared them from the gas chambers. Many of the women, who were deported to Auschwitz from across Nazi-occupied Europe, were so young that they did not understand their reproductive systems before suffering their destruction. This admirably crafted film traces the history of the survivors and the subsequent attempts to bring Clauberg to justice, which includes examining his -and these women's - enduring contribution to research on birth control and fertility and the role of German companies Siemens and Schering in profiting off the findings.

Movie: Lincoln@Gettysburg ( 2013 )

The telegraph was the "Internet" of the nineteenth century, and it gave Lincoln powers of command, communications, and control never before exercised by a commander-in-chief. He used this new technology to connect the country to him--receiving nearly live dispatches via telegraph from his generals in the field and sending out his plans for the nation faster and with more clarity than ever before. The results of Lincoln's pioneering experiment in electronic leadership would ultimately lead to the fields of Gettysburg. There, one battle turned the tide of the Civil War--and became the setting for the 272 words of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the speech that recast the American ideal as a national creed. Lincoln@Gettysburg unfolds the greatest turning point in American history, the rebirth of a nation, and the dawn of the information age.

Movie: Hitler's Steel Beast ( 2018 )
At the end of the 1930s, Hitler ordered the construction of a special train that could transport him around safely and appease his growing paranoia. A veritable fortress on rails, this armored fifteen-carriage convoy served as his mobile headquarters, and was where he met privately with Pétain, Franco and Mussolini. It was also the target of numerous assassination plots by the British secret service. Equipped with the most advanced communication facilities and a battery of anti-aircraft cannons, its construction called for a team of the biggest names in engineering, while the luxurious interior of each coach was designed by the Führer himself. We travel to Germany to discover what's left of these exceptional trains, and dig through the few surviving archives to retrace the little-known history of this special train and pierce the secrets behind Hitler's beast of steel.
